The curved exponential family of a staged tree

Staged tree models are a discrete generalization of Bayesian networks. We show that these form curved exponential families and derive their natural parameters, sufficient statistic, and cumulant-generating function as functions of their graphical representation. We give necessary and sufficient graphical criteria for classifying regular subfamilies and discuss implications for model selection.

Multivariate boundary regression models

In this work, we consider a multivariate regression model with one-sided errors. We assume for the regression function to lie in a general Hölder class and estimate it via a nonparametric local polynomial approach that consists of minimization of the local integral of a polynomial approximation lying above the data points. While the consideration of multivariate covariates offers an undeniable opportunity from an application-oriented standpoint, it requires a new method of proof to replace the established ones for the univariate case. The main purpose of this paper is to show the uniform consistency and to provide the rates of convergence of the considered nonparametric estimator for both multivariate random covariates and multivariate deterministic design points. To demonstrate the performance of the estimators, the small sample behavior is investigated in a simulation study in dimension two and three.

The Maximum Likelihood Degree of Linear Spaces of Symmetric Matrices

We study multivariate Gaussian models that are described by linear conditions on the concentration matrix. We compute the maximum likelihood (ML) degrees of these models. That is, we count the critical points of the likelihood function over a linear space of symmetric matrices. We obtain new formulae for the ML degree, one via Schubert calculus, and another using Segre classes from intersection theory. We settle the case of codimension one models, and characterize the degenerate case when the ML degree is zero.

Discrete Statistical Models with Rational Maximum Likelihood Estimator

A discrete statistical model is a subset of a probability simplex. Its maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is a retraction from that simplex onto the model. We characterize all models for which this retraction is a rational function. This is a contribution via real algebraic geometry which rests on results due to Huh and Kapranov on Horn uniformization. We present an algorithm for constructing models with rational MLE, and we demonstrate it on a range of instances. Our focus lies on models familiar to statisticians, like Bayesian networks, decomposable graphical models, and staged trees.

Random points on an algebraic manifold

Consider the set of solutions to a system of polynomial equations in many variables. An algebraic manifold is an open submanifold of such a set. We introduce a new method for computing integrals and sampling from distributions on algebraic manifolds. This method is based on intersecting with random linear spaces. It produces i.i.d. samples, works in the presence of multiple connected components, and is simple to implement. We present applications to computational statistical physics and topological data analysis.
