Doubling coverings of algebraic hypersurfaces

A doubling covering $\U$ of a complex nn-dimensional manifold YY consists of analytic functions ψj:B1→Yψ_j:B_1\to Y, each function being analytically extendable, as a mapping to YY, to a four times larger concentric ball B4B_4. Main result of this paper is an upper bound on the minimal number $κ({\U})$ of charts in doubling coverings of a manifold YY, being a compact part of a non-singular level hypersurface Y={P=c}Y=\{P=c\}, where PP is a polynomial on $\C^n$ with non-degenerated critical points. We show that $κ({\U})$ is of order log⁡(1/ρ)\log({1}/ρ), where ρρ is the distance from YY to the singular set of PP. Our main motivation is that doubling coverings form a special class of "smooth parameterizations", which are used in bounding entropy type invariants in smooth dynamics on one side, and in bounding density of rational points in diophantine geometry on the other. Complexity of smooth parameterizations is a key issue in some important open problems in both areas. We also present connections between doubling coverings and doubling inequalities for analytic functions ff on YY, which compare the maxima of ∣f∣|f| on couples of compact domains Ω⊂GΩ\subset G in YY. We shortly indicate connections with Kobayashi metric and with Harnack inequality.

(s,p)(s,p)-Valent Functions

We introduce the notion of (F,p)(\mathcal F,p)-valent functions. We concentrate in our investigation on the case, where F\mathcal F is the class of polynomials of degree at most ss. These functions, which we call (s,p)(s,p)-valent functions, provide a natural generalization of pp-valent functions (see~\cite{Ha}). We provide a rather accurate characterizing of (s,p)(s,p)-valent functions in terms of their Taylor coefficients, through "Taylor domination", and through linear non-stationary recurrences with uniformly bounded coefficients. We prove a "distortion theorem" for such functions, comparing them with polynomials sharing their zeroes, and obtain an essentially sharp Remez-type inequality in the spirit of~\cite{Y3} for complex polynomials of one variable. Finally, based on these results, we present a Remez-type inequality for (s,p)(s,p)-valent functions.

Inverse Littlewood-Offord problems for Quasi-Norms

Given a star-shaped domain K⊆RdK\subseteq \mathbb R^d, nn vectors v1,…,vn∈Rdv_1,\dots,v_n \in \mathbb R^d, a number R>0R>0, and i.i.d. random variables η1,…,ηnη_1,\dots,η_n, we study the geometric and arithmetic structure of the set of vectors V={v1,…,vn}V = \{v_1,\dots,v_n\} under the assumption that the small ball probability sup⁡x∈Rd P(∑j=1nηjvj∈x+RK)\sup_{x\in \mathbb R^d}~\mathbb P\Bigg(\sum_{j=1}^nη_jv_j\in x+RK\Bigg) does not decay too fast as n→∞n\to \infty. This generalises the case where KK is the Euclidean ball, which was previously studied by Nguyen-Vu and Tao-Vu.

Small ball estimates for quasi-norms

This note contains two types of small ball estimates for random vectors in finite dimensional spaces equipped with a quasi-norm. In the first part, we obtain bounds for the small ball probability of random vectors under some smoothness assumptions on their density function. In the second part, we obtain Littlewood-Offord type estimates for quasi-norms. This generalizes a result which was previously obtained by Friedland and Sodin and by Rudelson and Vershynin.

An observation on the Turán-Nazarov inequality

The main observation of this note is that the Lebesgue measure μμ in the Turán-Nazarov inequality for exponential polynomials can be replaced with a certain geometric invariant ω≥μω\ge μ, which can be effectively estimated in terms of the metric entropy of a set, and may be nonzero for discrete and even finite sets. While the frequencies (the imaginary parts of the exponents) do not enter in the original Turán-Nazarov inequality, they necessarily enter the definition of ωω.

Sparsity and non-Euclidean embeddings

We present a relation between sparsity and non-Euclidean isomorphic embeddings. We introduce a general restricted isomorphism property and show how it enables to construct embeddings of ℓpn\ell_p^n, p>0p > 0, into various type of Banach or quasi-Banach spaces. In particular, for 0<r<p<20 <r < p<2 with r≤1r \le 1, we construct a family of operators that embed ℓpn\ell_p^n into ℓr(1+η)n\ell_r^{(1+η)n}, with optimal polynomial bounds in η>0η>0.
