On the Stiefel-Whitney classes of GKM manifolds

We show that under standard assumptions on the isotropy groups of an integer GKM manifold, the equivariant Stiefel-Whitney classes of the action are determined by the GKM graph. This is achieved via a GKM-style description of the equivariant cohomology with coefficients in a finite field $\mathbb Z_{p}$ even though in this setting the restriction map to the fixed point set is not necessarily injective. This closes a gap in our argument why the GKM graph of a $6$-dimensional integer GKM manifold determines its nonequivariant diffeomorphism type. We introduce combinatorial Stiefel-Whitney classes of GKM graphs and use them to derive a nontrivial obstruction to realizability of GKM graphs in dimension $8$ and higher.

The GKM correspondence in dimension 6

It follows from the GKM description of equivariant cohomology that the GKM graph of a GKM manifold has free equivariant graph cohomology, and satisfies a Poincaré duality condition. We prove that these conditions are sufficient for an abstract $3$-valent $T^2$-GKM graph to be realizable by a simply-connected $6$-dimensional GKM manifold. Our realization has the property that any closed stratum of a finite isotropy group contains a fixed point. Furthermore, we argue that in case there exists a fixed point in whose vicinity there occur at most two distinct finite nontrivial isotropy groups such a realization is unique up to equivariant homeomorphism, thus establishing a complexity one GKM correspondence in dimension $6$. We show that the statement on equivariant uniqueness is false without the two conditions on the finite isotropies by providing counterexamples in presence of a fixed point with three distinct neighbouring finite isotropy groups, as well as an example of a simply-connected integer GKM manifold with a closed stratum of a finite isotropy group which does not contain any fixed point.

On Degenerate $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasakian Manifolds

We propose a new method to construct degenerate $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasakian manifolds as fiber products of Boothby-Wang bundles over hyperkähler manifolds. Subsequently, we study homogeneous degenerate $3$-$(α, δ)$-Sasakian manifolds and prove that no non-trivial compact examples exist as well as that there is exactly one family of nilpotent Lie groups with this geometry, the quaternionic Heisenberg groups.

GKM theory and Hamiltonian non-Kähler actions in dimension $6$

Using the classification of $6$-dimensional manifolds by Wall, Jupp and Žubr, we observe that the diffeomorphism type of simply-connected, compact $6$-dimensional integer GKM $T^2$-manifolds is encoded in their GKM graph. As an application, we show that the $6$-dimensional manifolds on which Tolman and Woodward constructed Hamiltonian, non-Kähler $T^2$-actions with finite fixed point set are both diffeomorphic to Eschenburg's twisted flag manifold $SU(3)//T^2$. In particular, they admit a noninvariant Kähler structure.

Realization of GKM fibrations and new examples of Hamiltonian non-Kähler actions

We classify fibrations of abstract $3$-regular GKM graphs over $2$-regular ones, and show that all fiberwise signed fibrations of this type are realized as the projectivization of equivariant complex rank $2$ vector bundles over quasitoric $4$-folds or $S^4$. We investigate the existence of invariant (stable) almost complex, symplectic, and Kähler structures on the total space. In this way we obtain infinitely many Kähler manifolds with Hamiltonian non-Kähler actions in dimension $6$ with prescribed one-skeleton, in particular with prescribed number of isolated fixed points.

Torus actions whose equivariant cohomology is Cohen-Macaulay

We study Cohen-Macaulay actions, a class of torus actions on manifolds, possibly without fixed points, which generalizes and has analogous properties as equivariantly formal actions. Their equivariant cohomology algebras are computable in the sense that a Chang-Skjelbred Lemma, and its stronger version, the exactness of an Atiyah-Bredon sequence, hold. The main difference is that the fixed point set is replaced by the union of lowest dimensional orbits. We find sufficient conditions for the Cohen-Macaulay property such as the existence of an invariant Morse-Bott function whose critical set is the union of lowest dimensional orbits, or open-face-acyclicity of the orbit space. Specializing to the case of torus manifolds, i.e., 2r-dimensional orientable compact manifolds acted on by r-dimensional tori, the latter is similar to a result of Masuda and Panov, and the converse of the result of Bredon that equivariantly formal torus manifolds are open-face-acyclic.

Equivariant Basic Cohomology of Riemannian Foliations

The basic cohomology of a Riemannian foliation on a complete manifold with all leaves closed is the cohomology of the leaf space. In this paper we introduce various methods to compute the basic cohomology in the presence of both closed and non-closed leaves in the simply-connected case (or more generally for Killing foliations): We show that the total basic Betti number of the union C of the closed leaves is smaller than or equal to the total basic Betti number of the foliated manifold, and we give sufficient conditions for equality. If there is a basic Morse-Bott function with critical set equal to C we can compute the basic cohomology explicitly. Another case in which the basic cohomology can be determined is if the space of leaf closures is a simple, convex polytope. Our results are based on Molino's observation that the existence of non-closed leaves yields a distinguished transverse action on the foliated manifold with fixed point set C. We introduce equivariant basic cohomology of transverse actions in analogy to equivariant cohomology of Lie group actions enabling us to transfer many results from the theory of Lie group actions to Riemannian foliations. The prominent role of the fixed point set in the theory of torus actions explains the relevance of the set C in the basic setting.

Torsion in equivariant cohomology and Cohen-Macaulay G-actions

We show that the well-known fact that the equivariant cohomology of a torus action is a torsion-free module if and only if the map induced by the inclusion of the fixed point set is injective generalises to actions of arbitrary compact connected Lie groups if one replaces the fixed point set by the set of points with maximal isotropy rank. This is true essentially because the action on this set is always equivariantly formal. In case this set is empty we show that the induced action on the set of points with highest occuring isotropy rank is Cohen-Macaulay. It turns out that just as equivariant formality of an action is equivalent to equivariant formality of the action of a maximal torus, the same holds true for equivariant injectivity and the Cohen-Macaulay property. In addition, we find a topological criterion for equivariant injectivity in terms of orbit spaces.
