A study of Tate homology via the approximation theory with applications to the depth formula

In this paper we are concerned with absolute, relative and Tate Tor modules. In the first part of the paper we generalize a result of Avramov and Martsinkovsky by using the Auslander-Buchweitz approximation theory, and obtain a new exact sequence connecting absolute Tor modules with relative and Tate Tor modules. In the second part of the paper we consider a depth equality, called the depth formula, which has been initially introduced by Auslander and developed further by Huneke and Wiegand. As an application of our main result, we generalize a result of Yassemi and give a new sufficient condition implying the depth formula to hold for modules of finite Gorenstein and finite injective dimension.

Remarks on a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand and the vanishing of (co)homology

In this paper we study a long-standing conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand which is concerned with the torsion submodule of certain tensor products of modules over one-dimensional local domains. We utilize Hochster's theta invariant and show that the conjecture is true for two periodic modules. We also make use of a result of Orlov and formulate a new condition which, if true over hypersurface rings, forces the conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand to be true over complete intersection rings of arbitrary codimension. Along the way we investigate the interaction between the vanishing of Tate (co)homology and torsion in tensor products of modules, and obtain new results that are of independent interest.

Maximal Cohen-Macaulay tensor products

In this paper we are concerned with the following question: if the tensor product of finitely generated modules $M$ and $N$ over a local complete intersection domain is maximal Cohen-Macaulay, then must $M$ or $N$ be a maximal Cohen-Macaulay? Celebrated results of Auslander, Lichtenbaum, and Huneke and Wiegand, yield affirmative answers to the question when the ring considered has codimension zero or one, but the question is very much open for complete intersection domains that have codimension at least two, even open for those that are one-dimensional, or isolated singularities. Our argument exploits Tor-rigidity and proves the following, which seems to give a new perspective to the aforementioned question: if $R$ is a complete intersection ring which is an isolated singularity such that dim($R$) > codim($R$), and the tensor product $M\otimes_R N$ is maximal Cohen-Macaulay, then $M$ is maximal Cohen-Macaulay if and only if $N$ is maximal Cohen-Macaulay.

Reducing invariants and total reflexivity

Motivated by a recent result of Yoshino, and the work of Bergh on reducible complexity, we introduce reducing versions of invariants of finitely generated modules over commutative Noetherian local rings. Our main result considers modules which have finite reducing Gorenstein dimension, and determines a criterion for such modules to be totally reflexive in terms of the vanishing of Ext. Along the way we give examples and applications, and in particular, prove that a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with canonical module is Gorenstein if and only if the canonical module has finite reducing Gorenstein dimension.

Generalized Gorenstein Arf rings

In this paper we study generalized Gorenstein Arf rings; a class of one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local Arf rings that is strictly contained in the class of Gorenstein rings. We obtain new characterizations and examples of Arf rings, and give applications of our argument to numerical semigroup rings and certain idealizations. In particular, we generalize a beautiful result of Barucci and Fröberg concerning Arf numerical semigroup rings.

On the ideal case of a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand

A conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand claims that, over one-dimensional commutative Noetherian local domains, the tensor product of a finitely generated, non-free, torsion-free module with its algebraic dual always has torsion. Building on a beautiful result of Corso, Huneke, Katz and Vasconcelos, we prove that the conjecture is affirmative for a large class of ideals over arbitrary one-dimensional local domains. Furthermore we study a higher dimensional analog of the conjecture for integrally closed ideals over Noetherian rings that are not necessarily local. We also consider a related question on the conjecture and give an affirmative answer for first syzygies of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules.

On the vanishing of theta invariant and a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand

Huneke and Wiegand conjectured that, if $M$ is a finitely generated, non-free, torsion-free module with rank over a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$, then the tensor product of $M$ with its algebraic dual has torsion. This conjecture, if $R$ is Gorenstein, is a special case of a celebrated conjecture of Auslander and Reiten on the vanishing of self extensions that stems from the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras. If $R$ is a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay ring such that $R=S/(f)$ for some local ring $(S, \mathfrak{n})$, and a non zero-divisor $f \in \mathfrak{n}^2$ on $S$, we make use of Hochster's theta invariant and prove that such $R$-modules $M$ which have finite projective dimension over $S$ satisfy the proposed torsion condition of the conjecture. Along the way we give several applications of our argument pertaining to torsion properties of tensor products of modules.

Tensoring with the Frobenius endomorphism

Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian Cohen-Macaulay local ring that has positive dimension and prime characteristic. Li proved that the tensor product of a finitely generated non-free $R$-module $M$ with the Frobenius endomorphism ${}^{φ^n}\!R$ is not maximal Cohen-Macaulay provided that $M$ has rank and $n\gg 0$. We replace the rank hypothesis with the weaker assumption that $M$ is locally free on the minimal prime ideals of $R$. As a consequence, we obtain, if $R$ is a one-dimensional non-regular complete reduced local ring that has a perfect residue field and prime characteristic, then ${}^{φ^n}\!R \otimes_{R}{}^{φ^n}\!R$ has torsion for all $n\gg0$. This property of the Frobenius endomorphism came as a surprise to us since, over such rings $R$, there exist non-free modules $M$ such that $M\otimes_{R}M$ is torsion-free.

On the ideal case of a conjecture of Auslander and Reiten

A celebrated conjecture of Auslander and Reiten claims that a finitely generated module $M$ that has no extensions with $M\oplus Λ$ over an Artin algebra $Λ$ must be projective. This conjecture is widely open in general, even for modules over commutative Noetherian local rings. Over such rings, we prove that a large class of ideals satisfy the extension condition proposed in the aforementioned conjecture of Auslander and Reiten. Along the way we obtain a new characterization of regularity in terms of the injective dimensions of certain ideals.

Stable homology over associative rings

We analyze stable homology over associative rings and obtain results over Artin algebras and commutative noetherian rings. Our study develops similarly for these classes; for simplicity we only discuss the latter here. Stable homology is a broad generalization of Tate homology. Vanishing of stable homology detects classes of rings---among them Gorenstein rings, the original domain of Tate homology. Closely related to gorensteinness of rings is Auslander's G-dimension for modules. We show that vanishing of stable homology detects modules of finite G-dimension. This is the first characterization of such modules in terms of vanishing of (co)homology alone. Stable homology, like absolute homology, Tor, is a theory in two variables. It can be computed from a flat resolution of one module together with an injective resolution of the other. This betrays that stable homology is not balanced in the way Tor is balanced. In fact, we prove that a ring is Gorenstein if and only if stable homology is balanced.

Testing for the Gorenstein property

We answer a question of Celikbas, Dao, and Takahashi by establishing the following characterization of Gorenstein rings: a commutative noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak m)$ is Gorenstein if and only if it admits an integrally closed $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal of finite Gorenstein dimension. This is accomplished through a detailed study of certain test complexes. Along the way we construct such a test complex that detect finiteness of Gorenstein dimension, but not that of projective dimension.

Criteria for vanishing of Tor over Complete Intersections

In this paper we exploit properties of Dao's eta-pairing as well as techniques of Huneke, Jorgensen, and Wiegand to study the vanishing of Tor_i(M,N) of finitely generated modules M, N over complete intersections. We prove vanishing of Tor_i(M, N) for all positive integers i under depth conditions on M, N, and their tensor product. Our arguments improve a result of Dao and establish a new connection between the vanishing of Tor and the depth of tensor products.

Torsion in tensor powers of modules

Tensor products usually have nonzero torsion. This is a central theme of Auslander's paper "Modules over unramified regular local rings"; the theme continues in the work of Huneke and Wiegand. The main focus in this note is on tensor powers of a finitely generated module over a local ring. Also, we study torsion-free modules N with the property that its tensor product with any module M has torsion, unless M is very special. Important examples of such modules N are the Frobenius power of a ring, viewed as a module over itself, that is a complete intersection domain of positive characteristic.

preprint2014arXiv

Torsion in tensor products, and tensor powers, of modules

For finitely generated modules M and N over a complete intersection R, the vanishing of Tor_i^R(M,N) for all i> 0 gives a tight relationship among depth properties of M, N and their tensor product. Here we concentrate on the converse and show, under mild conditions, that the tensor product of M and N being torsion-free (or satisfying higher Serre conditions) forces vanishing of Tor. Special attention is paid to the case of tensor powers of a single module.

Brauer-Thrall for totally reflexive modules over local rings of higher dimension

Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring. Assume that $R$ has a pair $\{x,y\}$ of exact zerodivisors such that $\dim R/(x,y)\ge2$ and all totally reflexive $R/(x)$-modules are free. We show that the first and second Brauer--Thrall type theorems hold for the category of totally reflexive $R$-modules. More precisely, we prove that, for infinitely many integers $n$, there exists an indecomposable totally reflexive $R$-module of multiplicity $n$. Moreover, if the residue field of $R$ is infinite, we prove that there exist infinitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable totally reflexive $R$-modules of multiplicity $n$.

Syzygies and tensor product of modules

We give an application of the New Intersection Theorem and prove the following: let $R$ be a local complete intersection ring of codimension $c$ and let $M$ and $N$ be nonzero finitely generated $R$-modules. Assume $n$ is a nonnegative integer and that the tensor product $M\tensor_{R}N$ is an $(n+c)$th syzygy of some finitely generated $R$-module. If Tor$^{R}_{>0}(M,N)=0$, then both $M$ and $N$ are $n$th syzygies of some finitely generated $R$-modules.

Necessary conditions for the depth formula over Cohen-Macaulay local rings

Let $R$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and let $M$ and $N$ be non-zero finitely generated $R$-modules. We investigate necessary conditions for the depth formula $\depth(M)+\depth(N)=\depth(R)+\depth(M\otimes_{R}N)$ to hold. We show that, under certain conditions, $M$ and $N$ satisfy the depth formula if and only if $\Tor_{i}^{R}(M,N)$ vanishes for all $i\geq 1$. We also examine the relationship between good depth of $M\otimes_RN$ and the vanishing of $\Ext$ modules, with various applications.

Asymptotic Behavior of Ext functors for modules of finite complete intersection dimension

Let $R$ be a local ring, and let $M$ and $N$ be finitely generated $R$-modules such that $M$ has finite complete intersection dimension. In this paper we define and study, under certain conditions, a pairing using the modules $\Ext_R^i(M,N)$ which generalizes Buchweitz's notion of the Herbrand diference. We exploit this pairing to examine the number of consecutive vanishing of $\Ext_R^i(M,N)$ needed to ensure that $\Ext_R^i(M,N)=0$ for all $i\gg 0$. Our results recover and improve on most of the known bounds in the literature, especially when $R$ has dimension at most two.
