Black branes with cosmological constant

We study neutral black branes with flat and curved worldvolumes in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. We reduce the equations governing the dynamics of such objects to one second--order ODE and perform various asymptotic expansions of the resulting equation. We also analyze regular geometries which have the same symmetries as the branes and interpolate between an empty interior and AdS asymptotics. We show that the dynamics of such spacetimes is governed by the Abel equation.

Generalized $λ$-deformations of AdS_p x S^p

We study analytical properties of the generalized $λ$-deformation, which modifies string theories while preserving integrability, and construct the explicit backgrounds corresponding to AdS_p x S^p, including the Ramond-Ramond fluxes. For an arbitrary coset, we find the general form of the R-matrix underlying the deformation, and prove that the dilaton is not modified by the deformation, while the frames are multiplied by a constant matrix. Our explicit solutions describe families of integrable string theories depending on several continuous parameters.

Supergravity background of the lambda-deformed AdS_3 x S^3 supercoset

We construct the solution of type IIB supergravity describing the integrable lambda-deformation of the AdS_3 x S^3 supercoset. While the geometry corresponding to the deformation of the bosonic coset has been found in the past, our background is more natural for studying superstrings, and several interesting features distinguish our solution from its bosonic counterpart. We also report progress towards constructing the lambda-deformation of the AdS_5 x S^5 supercoset.

Bubbling geometries for AdS_2 x S^2

We construct BPS geometries describing normalizable excitations of AdS_2 x S^2. All regular horizon-free solutions are parameterized by two harmonic functions in R^3 with sources along closed curves. This local structure is reminiscent of the "bubbling solutions" for the other AdS cases, however, due to peculiar asymptotic properties of AdS_2, one copy of R^3 does not cover the entire space, and we discuss the procedure for analytic continuation, which leads to a nontrivial topological structure of the new geometries. We also study supersymmetric brane probes on the new geometries, which represent the AdS_2 x S^2 counterparts of the giant gravitons.

Killing(-Yano) Tensors in String Theory

We construct the Killing(-Yano) tensors for a large class of charged black holes in higher dimensions and study general properties of such tensors, in particular, their behavior under string dualities. Killing(-Yano) tensors encode the symmetries beyond isometries, which lead to insights into dynamics of particles and fields on a given geometry by providing a set of conserved quantities. By analyzing the eigenvalues of the Killing tensor, we provide a prescription for constructing several conserved quantities starting from a single object, and we demonstrate that Killing tensors in higher dimensions are always associated with ellipsoidal coordinates. We also determine the transformations of the Killing(-Yano) tensors under string dualities, and find the unique modification of the Killing-Yano equation consistent with these symmetries. These results are used to construct the explicit form of the Killing(-Yano) tensors for the Myers-Perry black hole in arbitrary number of dimensions and for its charged version.

(Non)-Integrability of Geodesics in D-brane Backgrounds

Motivated by the search for new backgrounds with integrable string theories, we classify the D-brane geometries leading to integrable geodesics. Our analysis demonstrates that the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for massless geodesics can only separate in elliptic or spherical coordinates, and all known integrable backgrounds are covered by this separation. In particular, we identify the standard parameterization of AdS_p X S^q with elliptic coordinates on a flat base. We also find new geometries admitting separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the elliptic coordinates. Since separability of this equation is a necessary condition for integrability of strings, our analysis gives severe restrictions on the potential candidates for integrable string theories.

D1-D5-P microstates at the cap

The geometries describing D1-D5-P bound states in string theory have three regions: flat asymptotics, an anti-de Sitter throat, and a 'cap' region at the bottom of the throat. We identify the CFT description of a known class of supersymmetric D1-D5-P microstate geometries which describe degrees of freedom in the cap region. The class includes both regular solutions and solutions with conical defects, and generalizes configurations with known CFT descriptions: a parameter related to spectral flow in the CFT is generalized from integer to fractional values. We provide strong evidence for this identification by comparing the massless scalar excitation spectrum between gravity and CFT and finding exact agreement.

A toy black hole S-matrix in the D1-D5 CFT

To model the process of absorption and emission of quanta by an extremal D1-D5 black hole in the dual CFT, we consider transitions between different Ramond vacua via absorption and emission of chiral primaries. We compute the probabilities to reach different CFT states starting with a special Ramond vacuum, using techniques of the orbifold CFT. It is found that the processes involving the change of angular momentum by $k$ units are suppressed as 1/N^k

Adding momentum to supersymmetric geometries

We consider general supersymmetric solutions to minimal supergravity in six dimensions, trivially lifted to IIB supergravity. To any such solution we add a travelling-wave deformation involving the additional directions. The deformed solution is given in terms of a function which is harmonic in the background geometry. We also present a family of explicit examples describing microstates of the D1-D5 system on T^4. In the case where the background contains a large AdS region, the deformation is identified as corresponding to an action of a U(1) current of the D1-D5 orbifold CFT on a given state.

Holographic MQCD

We study a brane configuration of D4-branes and NS5-branes in weakly coupled type IIA string theory, which describes in a particular limit d=4 N=1 SU(N+p) supersymmetric QCD with 2N flavors and a quartic superpotential. We describe the geometric realization of the supersymmetric vacuum structure of this gauge theory. We focus on the confining vacua of the gauge theory, whose holographic description is given by the MQCD brane configuration in the near-horizon geometry of N D4-branes. This description, which gives an embedding of MQCD into a field theory decoupled from gravity, is valid for 1 << p << N, in the limit of large five dimensional `t Hooft couplings for the color and flavor groups. We analyze various properties of the theory in this limit, such as the spectrum of mesons, the finite temperature behavior, and the quark-anti-quark potential. We also discuss the same brane configuration on a circle, where it gives a geometric description of the moduli space of the Klebanov-Strassler cascading theory, and some non-supersymmetric generalizations.

Bubbling AdS space and 1/2 BPS geometries

We consider all 1/2 BPS excitations of $AdS \times S$ configurations in both type IIB string theory and M-theory. In the dual field theories these excitations are described by free fermions. Configurations which are dual to arbitrary droplets of free fermions in phase space correspond to smooth geometries with no horizons. In fact, the ten dimensional geometry contains a special two dimensional plane which can be identified with the phase space of the free fermion system. The topology of the resulting geometries depends only on the topology of the collection of droplets on this plane. These solutions also give a very explicit realization of the geometric transitions between branes and fluxes. We also describe all 1/2 BPS excitations of plane wave geometries. The problem of finding the explicit geometries is reduced to solving a Laplace (or Toda) equation with simple boundary conditions. We present a large class of explicit solutions. In addition, we are led to a rather general class of $AdS_5$ compactifications of M-theory preserving ${\cal N} =2$ superconformal symmetry. We also find smooth geometries that correspond to various vacua of the maximally supersymmetric mass-deformed M2 brane theory. Finally, we present a smooth 1/2 BPS solution of seven dimensional gauged supergravity corresponding to a condensate of one of the charged scalars.

Tachyon condensation and `bounce' in the D1-D5 system

We construct supergravity solutions dual to microstates of the D1-D3-D5 system with nonzero B field moduli. Just like the D1-D5 solutions in hep-th/0109154 these solutions are generically nonsingular everywhere, with the `throat' closing smoothly near r=0. We write expressions relating the asymptotic supergravity fields to the integral brane charges. We study the infall of a D1 brane down the throat of the geometries. This test brane `bounces' off the smooth end for generic initial conditions. The details of the bounce depend on both the choice of D1-D3-D5 microstate and the direction of approach of the infalling D1 brane. In the dual field theory description we see that the tachyon mode starts to condense, but the tachyon bounces back up the potential hill without reaching the deepest point of the potential.

Rotating deformations of AdS_3\times S^3, the orbifold CFT and strings in the pp-wave limit

We construct an exact metric which at short distances is the metric of massless particles in 5+1 spacetime (moving along a diameter of the sphere) and is AdS_3\times S^3 at infinity. We also consider a set of a conical defect spacetimes which are locally AdS_3\times S^3 and have the masses and charges of a special set of chiral primaries of the dual orbifold CFT. We find that excitation energies for a scalar field in the latter geometries agree exactly with the excitations in the corresponding CFT state created by twist operators: redshift in the geometry reproduces `long circle' physics in the CFT. We propose a map of string states in AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4 to states in the orbifold CFT, analogous to the recently discovered map for AdS_5\times S^5. The vibrations of the string can be pictured as oscillations of a Fermi sea in the CFT.

Metric of the multiply wound rotating string

We consider a string wrapped many times around a compact circle in space, and let this string carry a right moving wave which imparts momentum and angular momentum to the string. The angular momentum causes the strands of the `multiwound' string to separate and cover the surface of a torus. We compute the supergravity solution for this string configuration. We map this solution by dualities to the D1-D5 system with angular momentum that has been recently studied. We discuss how constructing this multiwound string solution may help us to relate the microscopic and macroscopic pictures of black hole absorption.

Can DLCQ test the Maldacena Conjecture?

We consider the Maldacena conjecture applied to the near horizon geometry of a D1-brane in the supergravity approximation and consider the possibility of testing the conjecture against the boundary field theory calculation using DLCQ. We propose the two point function of the stress energy tensor as a convenient quantity that may be computed on both sides of the correspondence. On the supergravity side, we may invoke the methods of Gubser, Klebanov, Polyakov, and Witten. On the field theory side, we derive an explicit expression for the two point function in terms of data that may be extracted from a DLCQ calculation at a given harmonic resolution. This gives rise to a well defined numerical algorithm for computing the two point function, which we test in the context of free fermions and the 't Hooft model. For the supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with 16 supercharges that arises in the Maldacena conjecture, the algorithm is perfectly well defined, although the size of the numerical computation grows too fast to admit any detailed analysis at present, and our results are only preliminary. We are, however, able to present more detailed results on the supersymmetric DLCQ computation of the stress energy tensor correlators for two dimensional Yang Mills theories with (1,1) and (2,2) supersymmetries.

Super Yang-Mills at Weak, Intermediate and Strong Coupling

We consider three dimensional SU(N) N=1 super-Yang-Mills compactified on the space-time R X S^1 X S^1. In particular, we compactify the light-cone coordinate x^- on a light-like circle via DLCQ, and wrap the remaining transverse coordinate on a spatial circle. By retaining only the first few excited modes in the transverse direction, we are able to solve for bound state wave functions and masses numerically by diagonalizing the discretized light-cone supercharge. This regularization of the theory is shown to preserve supersymmetry. We plot bound state masses as a function of the coupling, showing the transition in particle masses as we move from a weakly to a strongly-coupled theory. We analyze both numerically and analytically massless states which exist only in the limit of strong or weak gauge coupling. In addition, we find massless states that persist for all values of the gauge coupling. An analytical treatment of these massless states is provided. Interestingly, in the strong coupling limit, these massless states become string-like.
