Asymptotically Free AdS3/CFT2

We propose a new $AdS_3/CFT_2$ duality, in which the bulk string theory has a target spacetime $AdS_3$ times a squashed three-sphere $S^3_\flat$, and the dual $CFT_2$ is a symmetric product of sigma models on $R_ϕ\times S^3_\flat$, deformed by a $ϕ$-dependent $Z_2$ twist operator. The duality maps the asymptotic region of $AdS_3$ to the region $ϕ\to\infty$, where the twist interaction in the $CFT_2$ turns off. The $AdS_3$ backgrounds in question have $R_{AdS}<\ell_s$, and so lie on the string side of the string/black hole correspondence transition. As a consequence, the high energy density of states consists of a string gas in $AdS_3$ rather than an ensemble of BTZ black holes. This property allows us to derive the dual $CFT_2$ by a systematic analysis of the worldsheet string theory on $AdS_3$.

Winding Tachyons and Stringy Black Holes

We study string theory on $\mathbb{R}^d\times \mathbb{S}^1$. For applications to thermodynamics, the circumference of the $\mathbb{S}^1$ is the inverse temperature, $β$. We show that for $d=6$, the low energy effective field theory at the inverse Hagedorn temperature, $β=β_H$, has a one parameter family of normalizable spherically symmetric solutions that break the winding symmetry around the $\mathbb{S}^1$. The resulting backgrounds exhibit an enhanced symmetry, with the symmetry breaking pattern $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\to SU(2)_{\rm diagonal}$. The effective field theory analysis of these backgrounds is reliable for some range of parameters. More generally, they are described by a worldsheet CFT, which corresponds to the free theory on $\mathbb{R}^6\times \mathbb{S}^1$ perturbed by a non-abelian Thirring deformation with an $r$-dependent coupling. We propose that, in a certain scaling limit, string theory in these backgrounds is described by the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})/U(1)$ cigar, and provides a thermodynamic description of weakly coupled highly excited fundamental strings. We also discuss the relation of these backgrounds to Euclidean black holes with near-Hagedorn Hawking temperature, and possible generalizations to other $d$.

$T\bar T$ and LST

It was recently shown that the theory obtained by deforming a general two dimensional conformal theory by the irrelevant operator $T\bar T$ is solvable. In the context of holography, a large class of such theories can be obtained by studying string theory on $AdS_3$. We show that a certain $T\bar T$ deformation of the boundary $CFT_2$ gives rise in the bulk to string theory in a background that interpolates between $AdS_3$ in the IR and a linear dilaton spacetime in the UV, i.e. to a two dimensional vacuum of Little String Theory. This construction provides holographic duals for a large class of vacua of string theory in asymptotically linear dilaton spacetimes, and sheds light on the UV behavior of $T\bar T$ deformed $CFT_2$. It may provide a step towards holography in flat spacetime.

$T\bar T$, Black Holes and Negative Strings

String theory on $AdS_3$ has a solvable single-trace irrelevant deformation that is closely related to $T\bar T$. For one sign of the coupling, it leads to an asymptotically linear dilaton spacetime, and a corresponding Hagedorn spectrum. For the other, the resulting spacetime has a curvature singularity at a finite radial location, and an upper bound on the energies of states. Beyond the singularity, the signature of spacetime is flipped and there is an asymptotically linear dilaton boundary at infinity. We study the properties of black holes and fundamental strings in this spacetime, and find a sensible picture. The singularity does not give rise to a hard ultraviolet wall for excitations -- one must include the region beyond it to understand the theory. The size of black holes diverges as their energy approaches the upper bound, as does the location of the singularity. Fundamental strings pass smoothly through the singularity, but if their energy is above the upper bound, their trajectories are singular. From the point of view of the boundary at infinity, this background can be thought of as a vacuum of Little String Theory which contains a large number of negative strings.

$T \bar{T},J \bar T$, $T \bar{J}$ Partition Sums From String Theory

We calculate the torus partition sum of a general $CFT_2$ with left and right moving conserved currents $J$ and $\bar J$, perturbed by a combination of the irrelevant operators $T\bar T$, $J\bar T$ and $T\bar J$. We use string theory techniques to write it as an integral transform of the partition sum of the unperturbed CFT with chemical potentials for the left and right moving conserved charges. The resulting expression transforms in the right way under the modular group, and reproduces the known spectrum of these models. We also derive a formula for the partition function of deformed $CFT_2$ with non-vanishing chemical potential.

Strings, Symmetric Products, $T \bar{T}$ deformations and Hecke Operators

We derive a formula for the torus partition sum of the symmetric product of $T\bar T$ deformed CFT's, using previous work on long strings in (deformed) $AdS_3$, and universality. The result is given by an integral transform of the partition function for the block of the symmetric product, summed over its Hecke transforms, and is manifestly modular invariant. The spectrum is interpretable as a gas of multiply wound long strings with a particular orientation.

Stringy Horizons II

We show that the spectrum of normalizable states on a Euclidean SL(2,R)/U(1) black hole exhibits a duality between oscillator states and wound strings. This duality generalizes the FZZ correspondence, which can be thought of as an identification between a normalizable mode of dilaton gravity and a mode of the tachyon with winding number one around the Euclidean time circle. It implies that normalizable states on a large Euclidean black hole have support at widely separated scales. In particular, localized states that are extended over the cap of the cigar (the Euclidian analog of the black hole atmosphere) have a component that is localized near the tip of the cigar (the analog of the stretched horizon). As a consequence of this duality, the states exhibit a transition as a function of radial excitation level. From the perspective of a low energy probe, low lying states are naturally thought of as oscillator states in the black hole atmosphere, while at large excitation level they are naturally described as wound strings. As the excitation level increases, the size of the states first decreases and then increases. This behavior is expected to be a general feature of black hole horizons in string theory.

Constraining de Sitter Space in String Theory

We argue that the heterotic string does not have classical vacua corresponding to de Sitter space-times of dimension four or higher. The same conclusion applies to type II vacua in the absence of RR fluxes. Our argument extends prior supergravity no-go results to regimes of high curvature. We discuss the interpretation of the heterotic result from the perspective of dual type II orientifold constructions. Our result suggests that the genericity arguments used in string landscape discussions should be viewed with caution.

Stringy Horizons

We argue that classical $(α')$ effects qualitatively modify the structure of Euclidean black hole horizons in string theory. While low energy modes experience the geometry familiar from general relativity, high energy ones see a rather different geometry, in which the Euclidean horizon can be penetrated by an amount that grows with the radial momentum of the probe. We discuss this in the exactly solvable SL(2,R)/U(1) black hole, where it is a manifestation of the black hole/Sine-Liouville duality.

Supersymmetric Renyi Entropy in $CFT_2$ and $AdS_3$

We show that in any two dimensional conformal field theory with (2, 2) supersymmetry one can define a supersymmetric analog of the usual Renyi entropy of a spatial region A. It differs from the Renyi entropy by a universal function (which we compute) of the central charge, Renyi parameter n and the geometric parameters of A. In the limit $n \to1$ it coincides with the entanglement entropy. Thus, it contains the same information as the Renyi entropy but its computation only involves correlation functions of chiral and anti-chiral operators. We also show that this quantity appears naturally in string theory on $AdS_3$.

Three-Charge Black Holes and Quarter BPS States in Little String Theory

We show that the system of $k$ NS5-branes wrapping $\mathbb{T}^4\times S^1$ has non-trivial vacuum structure. Different vacua have different spectra of 1/4 BPS states that carry momentum and winding around the $S^1$. In one vacuum, such states are described by black holes; in another, they can be thought of as perturbative BPS states in Double Scaled Little String Theory. In general, both kinds of states are present. We compute the degeneracy of perturbative BPS states exactly, and show that it differs from that of the corresponding black holes. We comment on the implication of our results to the black hole microstate program, UV/IR mixing in Little String Theory, string thermodynamics, the string/black hole transition, and other issues.

(0,2) ADE Models From Four Dimensions

Four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with unitary gauge groups and matter in the adjoint and fundamental representations give rise to a series of non-trivial fixed points with an ADE classification. Many of these models exhibit generalizations of Seiberg duality. Upon compactification on a two-torus with suitable background fields for global U(1) symmetries, they flow at long distances to two dimensional theories with (0,2) supersymmetry. We study these theories, focusing on the two dimensional analogs of the four dimensional dualities.

Holographic Walking from Tachyon DBI

We use holography to study Conformal Phase Transitions, which are believed to be realized in four dimensional QCD and play an important role in walking technicolor models of electroweak symmetry breaking. At strong coupling they can be modeled by the non-linear dynamics of a tachyonic scalar field with mass close to the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound in anti de Sitter spacetime. Taking the action for this field to have a Tachyon-Dirac-Born-Infeld form gives rise to models that resemble hard and soft wall AdS/QCD, with a dynamically generated wall. For hard wall models, the highly excited spectrum has the KK form m_n ~ n; in the soft wall case we exhibit potentials with m_n ~ n^α, 0<α\leq1/2. We investigate the finite temperature phase structure and find first or second order symmetry restoration transitions, depending on the behavior of the potential near the origin of field space.

IIA Perspective On Cascading Gauge Theory

We study the N=1 supersymmetric cascading gauge theory found in type IIB string theory on p regular and M fractional D3-branes at the tip of the conifold, using the T-dual type IIA description. We reproduce the supersymmetric vacuum structure of this theory, and show that the IIA analog of the non-supersymmetric state found by Kachru, Pearson and Verlinde in the IIB description is metastable in string theory, but the barrier for tunneling to the supersymmetric vacuum goes to infinity in the field theory limit. We also comment on the N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory corresponding to regular and fractional D3-branes on a near-singular K3, and clarify the origin of the cascade in this theory.

Conformal Phase Transitions at Weak and Strong Coupling

D3 and D7-branes intersecting in 2+1 dimensions give rise at low energies to N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled to defect fermions in the fundamental representation. This theory undergoes a BKT-type phase transition from a conformal phase to one in which the fermions acquire a non-zero mass when the 't Hooft coupling of the N=4 SYM exceeds a critical value. To study this transition, we continue the parameters of the model to a regime where a gravitational description is valid. We use it to calculate the masses of mesons and the phase diagram as a function of temperature and chemical potential. We also comment on the relation of our discussion to the transition from the non-abelian Coulomb phase to a confining one believed to occur in QCD at a critical number of flavors.

Holographic MQCD

We study a brane configuration of D4-branes and NS5-branes in weakly coupled type IIA string theory, which describes in a particular limit d=4 N=1 SU(N+p) supersymmetric QCD with 2N flavors and a quartic superpotential. We describe the geometric realization of the supersymmetric vacuum structure of this gauge theory. We focus on the confining vacua of the gauge theory, whose holographic description is given by the MQCD brane configuration in the near-horizon geometry of N D4-branes. This description, which gives an embedding of MQCD into a field theory decoupled from gravity, is valid for 1 << p << N, in the limit of large five dimensional `t Hooft couplings for the color and flavor groups. We analyze various properties of the theory in this limit, such as the spectrum of mesons, the finite temperature behavior, and the quark-anti-quark potential. We also discuss the same brane configuration on a circle, where it gives a geometric description of the moduli space of the Klebanov-Strassler cascading theory, and some non-supersymmetric generalizations.

Stable and Metastable Vacua in Brane Constructions of SQCD

In a recent paper [1] we showed that N=1 supersymmetric QCD in the presence of certain superpotential deformations has a rich landscape of supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric vacua. In this paper we embed this theory in string theory as a low energy theory of intersecting NS and D-branes. We find that in the region of parameter space of brane configurations that can be reliably studied using classical string theory, the vacuum structure is qualitatively similar to that in the field theory regime. Effects that in field theory come from one loop corrections arise in string theory as classical gravitational effects. The brane construction provides a useful guide to the structure of stable and metastable gauge theory vacua.

Annulus Amplitudes and ZZ Branes in Minimal String Theory

We study the annulus amplitudes of (p,q) minimal string theory. Focusing on the ZZ-FZZT annulus amplitude as a target-space probe of the ZZ brane, we use it to confirm that the ZZ branes are localized in the strong-coupling region. Along the way we learn that the ZZ-FZZT open strings are fermions, even though our theory is bosonic! We also provide a geometrical interpretation of the annulus amplitudes in terms of the Riemann surface M_{p,q} that emerges from the FZZT branes. The ZZ-FZZT annulus amplitude measures the deformation of M_{p,q} due to the presence of background ZZ branes; each kind of ZZ-brane deforms only one A-period of the surface. Finally, we use the annulus amplitudes to argue that the ZZ branes can be regarded as "wrong-branch" tachyons which violate the bound α<Q/2.

Central Charges and $U(1)_R$ Symmetries in ${\cal N}=1$ Super Yang-Mills

We use recent results of Intriligator and Wecht [hep-th/0304128] to study the phase structure of $\NN=1$ super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $SU(N_c)$, a chiral superfield in the adjoint, and $N_f$ chiral superfields in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. Our discussion sheds new light on [hep-th/0304128] and supports the conjecture that the central charge $a$ decreases under RG flows and is non-negative in unitary four dimensional conformal field theories.

Irreversibility of the Renormalization Group Flow in Two Dimensional Quantum Gravity

We argue that the torus partition sum in $2d$ (super) gravity, which counts physical states in the theory, is a decreasing function of the renormalization group scale. As an application we chart the space of $(\hat c\leq1)$ $c\leq1$ models coupled to (super) gravity, confirming and extending ideas due to A. Zamolodchikov, and discuss briefly string theory, where our results imply that the number of degrees of freedom decreases with time.
