Strain induced quantum Hall effect of excitons in graphene

We study the effect of a uniform pseudomagnetic field, induced by a strain in a monolayer and double layer of gapped graphene, acting on excitons. For our analysis it is crucial that the pseudomagnetic field acts on the charges of the constituent particles of the excitons, i.e., the electrons and holes, the same way in contrast to a magnetic field. Moreover, using a circularly polarized laser field, the electrons and the holes can be excited only in one valley of the honeycomb lattice of gapped graphene. This breaks the time-reversal symmetry and provides the possibility to observe the various Quantum Hall phenomena in this pseudomagnetoexciton system. Our study poses a fundamental problem of the quantum Hall effect for composite particles and paves the way for quantum Hall physics of pseudomagnetoexcitons.

High-temperature superfuidity of the two-component Bose gas in a TMDC bilayer

The high-temperature superfluidity of two-dimensional dipolar excitons in two parallel TMDC layers is predicted. We study Bose-Einstein condensation in the two-component system of dipolar A and B excitons. The effective mass, energy spectrum of the collective excitations, the sound velocity and critical temperature are obtained for different TMDC materials. It is shown that in the Bogolubov approximation the sound velocity in the two-component dilute exciton Bose gas is always larger than in any one-component. The difference between the sound velocities for two-component and one-component dilute gases is caused by the fact that the sound velocity for two-component system depends on the reduced mass of A and B excitons, which is always smaller than the individual mass of A or B exciton. Due to this fact, the critical temperature Tc for superfluidity for the two-component exciton system in TMDC bilayer is about one order of magnitude higher than Tc in any one-component exciton system. We propose to observe the superfluidity of two-dimensional dipolar excitons in two parallel TMDC layers, which causes two opposite superconducting currents in each TMDC layer.

Spontaneous formation and non-equilibrium dynamics of a soliton-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate in a trap

The Bose-stimulated self-organization of a quasi-two dimensional non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate in an in-plane potential is proposed. We obtained the solution of the nonlinear, driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an external asymmetric parabolic potential within the method of the spectral expansion. We found that, in sharp contrast to previous observations, the condensate can spontaneously acquire a soliton-like shape for spatially homogenous pumping. This condensate soliton performs oscillatory motion in a parabolic trap and, also, can spontaneously rotate. Stability of the condensate soliton in the spatially asymmetric trap is analyzed. In addition to the nonlinear dynamics of non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates of ultra-cold atoms, our findings can be applied to the condensates of quantum well excitons and cavity polaritons in semiconductor heterostructure, and to the condensates of photons.

Polariton-based optical switch

Based on the studies of propagation of an exciton-polariton condensate in a patterned optical microcavity with an embedded graphene layer, we propose a design of a Y-shaped electrically-controlled optical switch. The polaritons are driven by a time-independent force due to the microcavity wedge shape and by a time-dependent drag force owing to the interaction of excitons in graphene and the electric current running in a neighboring quantum well. It is demonstrated that one can control the polariton flow direction by changing the direction of the electric current. The simulations also show that an external electric field normal to the microcavity plane can be utilized as an additional parameter that controls the propagation of the signals in the switch. By considering the transient dynamics of the polariton condensate, we estimate the response speed of the switch. Finally, we propose a design of the polariton switch in a flat microcavity based on the geometrically identical Y-shaped quantum well and graphene pattern where the polariton flow is only induced by the drag force.

Graphene nanoribbon based spaser

A novel type of spaser with the net amplification of surface plasmons (SPs) in doped graphene nanoribbon is proposed. The plasmons in THz region can be generated in a dopped graphene nanoribbon due to nonradiative excitation by emitters like two level quantum dots located along a graphene nanoribbon. The minimal population inversion per unit area, needed for the net amplification of SPs in a doped graphene nanoribbon is obtained. The dependence of the minimal population inversion on the surface plasmon wavevector, graphene nanoribbon width, doping and damping parameters necessary for the amplification of surface plasmons in the armchair graphene nanoribbon is studied.

Phase transitions in the two-dimensional electron-hole gas

A first order phase transition between a BCS phase and an insulating Mott phase for a gas of spatially separated electrons and holes with tunable Coulomb interaction and variable density is predicted. In the framework of a BCS-like mean-field approach and a Landau expansion in terms of the pairing order parameter the phase diagram is studied. This indicates several phases and phase transitions, including an electron-hole plasma at low density and weak interaction, an intermediate BCS phase with Cooper pairs and an electron-hole plasma at high density and weak interaction. The insulating Mott phase appears for the strong interaction and low temperatures. We briefly discuss the possibilities to realize these phases in realistic systems such as coupled quantum wells and graphene double layers.

The electron-hole superfluidity in two coaxial nanotubes

The superfluid phase and Coulomb drag effect caused by the pairing in the system of spatially separated electrons and holes in two coaxial cylindrical nanotubes are predicted. It is found that the drag resistance as a function of temperature experiences a jump at the critical temperature and can be used for the manifestation of the superfluid transition. It is demonstrated that at sufficiently low temperatures the order parameter and free energy density exhibit a kink due to the electron-hole asymmetry that is controlled by the radii of the nanotubes.

Superfluidity and collective properties of excitonic polaritons in gapped graphene in a microcavity

We predict the formation and superfluidity of polaritons in an optical microcavity formed by excitons in gapped graphene embedded there and microcavity photons. The Rabi splitting related to the creation of an exciton in a graphene layer in the presence of the band gap is obtained. The analysis of collective excitations as well as the sound velocity is presented. We show that the superfluid density and temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition are decreasing functions of the energy gap.

Graphene-based one-dimensional photonic crystal

A novel type of one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal formed by the array of periodically located stacks of alternating graphene and dielectric stripes embedded into a background dielectric medium is proposed. The wave equation for the electromagnetic wave propagating in such structure solved in the framework of the Kronig-Penney model. The frequency band structure of 1D graphene-based photonic crystal is obtained analytically as a function of the filling factor and the thickness of the dielectric between graphene stripes. The photonic frequency corresponding to the electromagnetic wave localized by the defect of photonic crystal formed by the extra dielectric placed on the place of the stack of alternating graphene and dielectric stripes is obtained.

Introduction to Nonlinear Phenomena in Superfluid Liquids and Bose-Einstein Condensates: Helium, Semiconductors and Graphene

We review current understanding of the non-equilibrium dynamics of collective quantum systems. We describe an approach based on the Hamiltonian formulation of superfluid hydrodynamics. It is shown that, in the presence of constant energy pumping, the nonlinear coupling of fluctuations in the density and entropy strongly affects the nonequilibrium dynamics of the system. We use the results obtained to analyze the properties of out-of-equilibrium superfluid 4He and of exciton polariton Bose-Einstein condensates, both in semiconductor quantum wells and in graphene layers in presence of high magnetic field.

Superfluidity of dipole excitons in two layers of gapped graphene

A study of the formation of excitons as a problem of two Dirac particles confined in two-layer graphene sheets separated by a dielectric when gaps are opened and they interact via a Coulomb potential is presented. We propose to observe Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity of quasi-two-dimensional dipole excitons in double layer graphene in the presence of band gaps. The energy spectrum of the collective excitations, the sound spectrum, and the effective exciton mass are functions of the energy gaps, density and interlayer separation. The superfluid density ns and temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition Tc are decreasing functions of the energy gaps as well as the interlayer separation, and therefore, could be controlled by these parameters.

Trions in coupled quantum wells and Wigner crystallization

We consider a restricted three body problem, where two interacted particles are located in two dimensional (2D) plane and interact with the third one located in the parallel spatially separated plane. The system of such type can be formed in the semiconductor coupled quantum wells, where the electrons (or holes) and direct excitons spatially separated in different parallel neighboring quantum wells that are sufficiently close to interact and form negative X- or positive X+ indirect trions. It is shown that at large interwell separations, when the interwell separation much greater than the exciton Bohr radius, this problem can be solved analytically using the cluster approach. Analytical results for the energy spectrum and the wave functions of the spatially indirect trion are obtained, their dependence on the interwell separations is analyzed and a conditional probability distribution is calculated. The formation of 2D Wigner crystal of trions at the low densities is predicted. It is shown that the critical density of the formation of the trion Wigner crystal is sufficiently greater than the critical density of the electron Wigner crystal.

Can we move photons?

The drag effects in the system of spatially separated electrons and excitons in coupled quantum wells (CQWs) embedded in an optical microcavity are predicted. It is shown that at low temperature an electron current induces the polariton flow, therefore, a transport of photons along the cavity. However, the superfluid polariton component does not contribute to the electron drag. The polariton-electron at the low temperatures and exciton-electron at the high temperatures drag coefficients are presented. It is shown that the drag coefficients increase when temperature increases. We discuss possible experiments for the observation of the electron-polariton drag effect.

Collective Properties of Excitons in Presence of a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

We have studied the collective properties of two-dimensional (2D) excitons immersed within a quantum well which contains 2D excitons and a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). We have also analyzed the excitations for a system of 2D dipole excitons with spatially separated electrons and holes in a pair of quantum wells (CQWs) when one of the wells contains a 2DEG. Calculations of the superfluid density and the Kosterlitz-Thouless (K-T) phase transition temperature for the 2DEG-exciton system in a quantum well have shown that the K-T transition temperature increases with increasing exciton density and that it might be possible to have fast long range transport of excitons. The superfluid density and the K-T transition temperature for dipole excitons in CQWs in the presence of a 2DEG in one of the wells increases with increasing inter-well separation.

Drag effects in the system of electrons and microcavity polaritons

The theory of the drag effects in the system of spatially separated electrons and excitons in coupled quantum wells (QW) embedded in an optical microcavity is developed. It is shown that at low temperature an electron current induces the (normal component) polariton flow, therefore, a transport of photons along the cavity. However, the electron current dragged by the polariton flow is strongly suppressed below polariton superfluid transition temperature and hence, the strong suppression of the induced electron current indicates the superfluidity of polaritons. Therefore, the transport properties of polaritons can be investigated by measuring the current or voltage in the electron subsystem. At high temperatures we study the exciton-electron drag effects. At high temperatures regime, from one hand, the existence of the electric current in an electron QW induces the exciton flow in the other QW, from the other hand, the electron current in one QW induces the exciton flow in the other QW via the drag of excitons by the electrons. The drag coefficients for the polariton-electron systems are calculated and analyzed. We discuss the possible experimental observation of the drag effects in the system of electrons and microcavity polaritons, that also allow to observe the cavity polaritons superfluidity.

Graphene-based photonic crystal

A novel type of photonic crystal formed by embedding a periodic array of constituent stacks of alternating graphene and dielectric discs into a background dielectric medium is proposed. The photonic band structure and transmittance of such photonic crystal are calculated. The graphene-based photonic crystals can be used effectively as the frequency filters and waveguides for the far infrared region of electromagnetic spectrum. Due to substantial suppression of absorption of low-frequency radiation in doped graphene the damping and skin effect in the photonic crystal are also suppressed. The advantages of the graphene-based photonic crystal are discussed.

Bose-Einstein condensation of quasiparticles in graphene

The collective properties of different quasiparticles in various graphene based structures in high magnetic field have been studied. We predict Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and superfluidity of 2D spatially indirect magnetoexcitons in two-layer graphene. The superfluid density and the temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition are shown to be increasing functions of the excitonic density but decreasing functions of magnetic field and the interlayer separation. The instability of the ground state of the interacting 2D indirect magnetoexcitons in a slab of superlattice with alternating electron and hole graphene layers (GLs) is established. The stable system of indirect 2D magnetobiexcitons, consisting of pair of indirect excitons with opposite dipole moments, is considered in graphene superlattice. The superfluid density and the temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition for magnetobiexcitons in graphene superlattice are obtained. Besides, the BEC of excitonic polaritons in GL embedded in a semiconductor microcavity in high magnetic field is predicted. While superfluid phase in this magnetoexciton polariton system is absent due to vanishing of magnetoexciton-magnetoexciton interaction in a single layer in the limit of high magnetic field, the critical temperature of BEC formation is calculated. The essential property of magnetoexcitonic systems based on graphene (in contrast, e.g., to a quantum well) is stronger influence of magnetic field and weaker influence of disorder. Observation of the BEC and superfluidity of 2D quasiparticles in graphene in high magnetic field would be interesting confirmation of the phenomena we have described.

Bose-Einstein condensation of trapped polaritons in 2D electron-hole systems in a high magnetic field

The Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnetoexcitonic polaritons in two-dimensional (2D) electron-hole system embedded in a semiconductor microcavity in a high magnetic field $B$ is predicted. There are two physical realizations of 2D electron-hole system under consideration: a graphene layer and quantum well (QW). A 2D gas of magnetoexcitonic polaritons is considered in a planar harmonic potential trap. Two possible physical realizations of this trapping potential are assumed: inhomogeneous local stress or harmonic electric field potential applied to excitons and a parabolic shape of the semiconductor cavity causing the trapping of microcavity photons. The effective Hamiltonian of the ideal gas of cavity polaritons in a QW and graphene in a high magnetic field and the BEC temperature as functions of magnetic field are obtained. It is shown that the effective polariton mass $M_{\rm eff}$ increases with magnetic field as $B^{1/2}$. The BEC critical temperature $T_{c}^{(0)}$ decreases as $B^{-1/4}$ and increases with the spring constant of the parabolic trap. The Rabi splitting related to the creation of a magnetoexciton in a high magnetic field in graphene and QW is obtained. It is shown that Rabi splitting in graphene can be controlled by the external magnetic field since it is proportional to $B^{-1/4}$, while in a QW the Rabi splitting does not depend on the magnetic field when it is strong.
