Electron Spin Resonance of the Interacting Spinon Liquid

We report experimental verification of the recently predicted collective modes of spinons, stabilized by backscattering interaction, in a model quantum spin chain material. We exploit the unique geometry of uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in K$_2$CuSO$_4$Br$_2$ to measure the interaction-induced splitting between the two components of the electron spin resonance (ESR) response doublet. From that we directly determine the magnitude of the "marginally irrelevant" backscattering interaction between spinons for the first time.

Hydrodynamics of interacting spinons in the magnetized spin-$1/2$ chain with the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We use a hydrodynamic approach to investigate dynamic spin susceptibility of the antiferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain with a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the presence of an external magnetic field. We find that transverse (with respect to the magnetic field) spin susceptibility harbors two (respectively, three) spin excitation modes when the magnetic field is parallel (respectively, orthogonal) to the DM axis. In all cases, the marginally irrelevant backscattering interaction between the spinons creates a finite energy splitting between optical branches of excitations at $k = 0$. Additionally, for the orthogonal geometry, the two lower spin branches exhibit avoided crossing at finite momentum which is determined by the total magnetic field (the sum of the external and internal molecular fields) acting on spinons. Our approximate analytical calculations compare well with numerical results obtained using matrix-product-state (MPS) techniques. Physical consequences of our findings for the electron spin resonance experiments are discussed in detail.

Collective spinon spin wave in a magnetized U(1) spin liquid

We study the transverse dynamical spin susceptibility of the two dimensional U(1) spinon Fermi surface spin liquid in a small applied Zeeman field. We show that both short-range interactions, present in a generic Fermi liquid, as well as gauge fluctuations, characteristic of the U(1) spin liquid, qualitatively change the result based on the frequently assumed non-interacting spinon approximation. Short-range interaction leads to a new collective mode: a "spinon spin wave" which splits off from the two-spinon continuum at small momentum and disperses downward. Gauge fluctuations renormalize the susceptibility, providing non-zero power law weight in the region outside the spinon continuum and giving the spin wave a finite lifetime, which scales as momentum squared. We also study the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy on the zero momentum susceptibility, which is measured in electron spin resonance (ESR), and obtain a resonance linewidth linear in temperature and varying as $B^{2/3}$ with magnetic field $B$ at low temperature. Our results form the basis for a theory of inelastic neutrons scattering, ESR, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of this quantum spin liquid state.

Emergent quasi-one-dimensionality in a kagomé magnet: A simple route to complexity

We study the ground state phase diagram of the quantum spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the kagomé lattice with first- ($J_1 < 0$), second- ($J_2 < 0$), and third-neighbor interactions ($J_d > 0$) by means of analytical low-energy field theory and numerical density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies. The results offer a consistent picture of the $J_d$-dominant regime in terms of three sets of spin chains weakly coupled by the ferromagnetic inter-chain interactions $J_{1,2}$. When either $J_1$ or $J_2$ is dominant, the model is found to support one of two cuboctohedral phases, cuboc1 and cuboc2. These cuboc states host non-coplanar long-ranged magnetic order and possess finite scalar spin chirality. However, in the compensated regime $J_1 \simeq J_2$, a valence bond crystal phase emerges between the two cuboc phases. We find excellent agreement between an analytical theory based on coupled spin chains and unbiased DMRG calculations, including at a very detailed level of comparison of the structure of the valence bond crystal state. To our knowledge, this is the first such comprehensive understanding of a highly frustrated two-dimensional (2d) quantum antiferromagnet. We find no evidence of either the one-dimensional (1d) gapless spin liquid or the chiral spin liquids, which were previously suggested by parton mean field theories.

A Panoply of Orders from a Quantum Lifshitz Field Theory

We propose a universal non-linear sigma model field theory for one dimensional frustrated ferromagnets, which applies in the vicinity of a "quantum Lifshitz point", at which the ferromagnetic state develops a spin wave instability. We investigate the phase diagram resulting from perturbations of the exchange and of magnetic field away from the Lifshitz point, and uncover a rich structure with two distinct regimes of different properties, depending upon the value of a marginal, dimensionless, parameter of the theory. In the regime relevant for one dimensional systems with low spin, we find a metamagnetic transition line to a vector chiral phase. This line terminates in a critical endpoint from which emerges a cascade of multipolar phases. We show that the field theory has the property of "asymptotic solubility", so that a particular saddle point approximation becomes asymptotically exact near the Lifshitz point. Our results provide an analytic framework for prior numerical results on frustrated ferromagnets, and can be applied much more broadly.

Phases of triangular lattice antiferromagnet near saturation

We consider 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a triangular lattice with spatially anisotropic interactions in a high magnetic field close to the saturation. We show that this system possess rich phase diagram in field/anisotropy plane due to competition between classical and quantum orders: an incommensurate non-coplanar spiral state, which is favored classically, and a commensurate co-planar state, which is stabilized by quantum fluctuations. We show that the transformation between these two states is highly non-trivial and involves two intermediate phases -- the phase with co-planar incommensurate spin order and the one with non-coplanar double-${\bf Q}$ spiral order. The transition between the two co-planar states is of commensurate- incommensurate type, not accompanied by softening of spin-wave excitations. We show that a different sequence of transitions holds in triangular antiferromagnets with exchange anisotropy, such as Ba3CoSb2O9.

Unusual ordered phases of highly frustrated magnets: a review

We review ground states and excitations of a quantum antiferromagnet on triangular and other frustrated lattices. We pay special attention to the combined effects of magnetic field h, spatial anisotropy R, and spin magnitude S. The focus of the review is on the novel collinear spin density wave and spin nematic states, which are characterized by fully gapped transverse spin excitations with $S^z = \pm 1$. We discuss extensively R-h phase diagram of the antiferromagnet, both in the large-S semiclassical limit and the quantum S=1/2 limit. When possible, we point out connections with experimental findings.

Excitations and quasi-one-dimensionality in field-induced nematic and spin density wave states

We study the excitation spectrum and dynamical response functions for several quasi-one-dimensional spin systems in magnetic fields without dipolar spin order transverse to the field. This includes both nematic phases, which harbor "hidden" breaking of spin-rotation symmetry about the field and have been argued to occur in high fields in certain frustrated chain systems with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, and spin density wave states, in which spin-rotation symmetry is truly unbroken. Using bosonization, field theory, and exact results on the integrable sine-Gordon model, we establish the collective mode structure of these states, and show how they can be distinguished experimentally.

Ground States of Spin-1/2 Triangular Antiferromagnets in a Magnetic Field

We use a combination of density matrix renormalization group calculations and analytical approaches to study a simplified model for a spatially anisotropic spin-1/2 triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet: the three-leg triangular spin tube (TST). The model is described by three Heisenberg chains, with exchange constant J, coupled antiferromagnetically with exchange constant J' along the diagonals of the ladder system, with periodic boundary conditions in the shorter direction. We determine the full phase diagram of this model as a function of spatial anisotropy, J'/J, and magnetic field. We find a rich phase diagram, which is dominated by quantum states - phases corresponding to the classical ground state appears only in a small region. Among the dominant phases generated by quantum effects are commensurate and incommensurate coplanar quasi-ordered states, which appear in the vicinity of the isotropic region for most fields, and in the high field region for most anisotropies. The coplanar states, while not classical ground states, can be understood semiclassically. Even more strikingly, the largest region of phase space is occupied by a spin density wave phase, which has incommensurate collinear correlations along the field. This phase has no semiclassical analog, and may be ascribed to enhanced one-dimensional (1d) fluctuations due to frustration. Cutting across the phase diagram is a magnetization plateau, with a gap to all excitations and up up down spin order, with a quantized magnetization equal to 1/3 of the saturation value. In the TST, this plateau extends almost but not quite to the decoupled chains limit. Most of the above features are expected to carry over to the two dimensional system, which we also discuss. At low field, a dimerized phase appears, which is particular to the 1d nature of the TST, and which can be understood from quantum Berry phase arguments.

Spin-current order in anisotropic triangular antiferromagnets

We analyze instabilities of the collinear up-up-down state of a two-dimensional quantum spin-S spatially anisotropic triangular lattice antiferromagnet in a magnetic field. We find, within large-S approximation, that near the end point of the plateau, the collinear state becomes unstable due to condensation of two-magnon bound pairs rather than single magnons. The two-magnon instability leads to a novel 2D vector chiral phase with alternating spin currents but no magnetic order in the direction transverse to the field. This phase breaks a discrete Z_2 symmetry but preserves a continuous U(1) one of rotations about the field axis. It possesses orbital antiferromagnetism and displays a magnetoelectric effect.

Half-metallic magnetization plateaux

We propose a novel interaction-based route to half-metal state for interacting electrons on two-dimensional lattices. Magnetic field applied parallel to the lattice is used to tune one of the spin densities to a particular commensurate with the lattice value in which the system spontaneously `locks in' via van Hove enhanced density wave state. Electrons of opposite spin polarization retain their metallic character and provide for the half-metal state which, in addition, supports magnetization plateau in a finite interval of external magnetic field. Similar half-metal state is realized in the finite-U Hubbard model on a triangular lattice at 1/3 of the maximum magnetization.

Deformed triangular lattice antiferromagnets in a magnetic field: role of spatial anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

Recent experiments on the anisotropic spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet Cs_2CuBr_4 have revealed a remarkably rich phase diagram in applied magnetic fields, consisting of an unexpectedly large number of ordered phases. Motivated by this finding, we study the role of spatial anisotropy, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and quantum fluctuations on the magnetization process of a triangular antiferromagnet, coming from the semiclassical limit. The richness of the problem stems from two key facts: 1) the classical isotropic model exhibits a large accidental ground state degeneracy, and 2) these three ingredients compete with one another and split this degeneracy in opposing ways. Using a variety of complementary approaches, including extensive Monte Carlo numerics, spin-wave theory, and an analysis of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons at high fields, we find that their interplay gives rise to a complex phase diagram consisting of numerous incommensurate and commensurate phases. Our results shed light on the observed phase diagram for Cs_2CuBr_4 and suggest a number of future theoretical and experimental directions that will be useful for obtaining a complete understanding of this material's interesting phenomenology.

Interaction Effects in Topological Superconducting Wires Supporting Majorana Fermions

Among the broad spectrum of systems predicted to exhibit topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions, one-dimensional wires with strong spin-orbit coupling provide one of the most promising experimental candidates. Here we investigate the fate of the topological superconducting phase in such wires when repulsive interactions are present. Using a combination of Density Matrix Renormalization Group, bosonization, and Hartree-Fock techniques, we demonstrate that while interactions degrade the bulk gap -consistent with recent results of Gangadharaiah et al.- they also greatly expand the parameter range over which the topological phase arises. In particular, we show that with interactions this phase can be accessed over a broader chemical potential window, thereby leading to greater immunity against disorder-induced chemical potential fluctuations in the wire. We also suggest that in certain wires strong interactions may allow Majorana fermions to be generated without requiring a magnetic field.

Extreme sensitivity of a frustrated quantum magnet: Cs_2CuCl_4

We report a thorough theoretical study of the low temperature phase diagram of Cs_2CuCl_4, a spatially anisotropic spin S=1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet, in a magnetic field. Our results, obtained in a quasi-one-dimensional limit in which the system is regarded as a set of weakly coupled Heisenberg chains, are in excellent agreement with experiment. The analysis reveals some surprising physics. First, we find that, when the magnetic field is oriented within the triangular layer, spins are actually most strongly correlated within planes perpendicular to the triangular layers. This is despite the fact that the inter-layer exchange coupling in Cs_2CuCl_4 is about an order of magnitude smaller than the weakest (diagonal) exchange in the triangular planes themselves. Second, the phase diagram in such orientations is exquisitely sensitive to tiny interactions, heretofore neglected, of order a few percent or less of the largest exchange couplings. These interactions, which we describe in detail, induce entirely new phases, and a novel commensurate-incommensurate transition, the signatures of which are identified in NMR experiments. We discuss the differences between the behavior of Cs_2CuCl_4 and an ideal two-dimensional triangular model, and in particular the occurrence of magnetization plateaux in the latter. These and other related results are presented here along with a thorough exposition of the theoretical methods, and a discussion of broader experimental consequences to Cs_2CuCl_4 and other materials.

Phase diagram of the frustrated spin ladder

We re-visit the phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder with two competing inter-chain antiferromagnetic exchanges, rung coupling J_\perp and diagonal coupling J_\times. We suggest, based on the accurate renormalization group analysis of the low-energy Hamiltonian of the ladder, that marginal inter-chain current-current interaction plays central role in destabilizing previously predicted intermediate columnar dimer phase in the vicinity of classical degeneracy line J_\perp = 2J_\times. Following this insight we then suggest that changing these competing inter-chain exchanges from the previously considered antiferromagnetic to the ferromagnetic ones eliminates the issue of the marginal interactions altogether and dramatically expands the region of stability of the columnar dimer phase. This analytical prediction is convincingly confirmed by the numerical density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations as well as by the perturbative calculation in the strong rung-coupling limit. The phase diagram for ferromagnetic J_\perp and J_\times is determined.

Crossover from $O(3)$ to $O(4)$ behavior in weakly frustrated antiferromagnets

We consider an anisotropic version of the $CP^{1}$ model which describes frustrated quantum antiferromagnets with incommensurate spin correlations. We extend the two-component spinon field, describing lattice spins, to the $M$-component complex vector, and show, in the $1/M$ expansion, that for arbitrary small incommensurability longitudinal and transverse stiffnesses tend to the same value as the system approaches the quantum critical point. For physical spins ($M=2$), this yields $O(4)$ critical behavior. However, if the spin structure is commensurate, the longitudinal stiffness is identically zero. In this case, the critical behavior is the same as in $O(3)$ sigma model. We show how the critical exponents interpolate between $O(3)$ and $O(4)$ values near the transition. We also show that the competition between these two fixed points leads to a confinement-deconfinement transition at a finite temperature.

On the confinement of spinons in the $CP^{M-1}$ model

We use the $1/M$ expansion for the $CP^{M-1}$ model to study the long-distance behaviour of the staggered spin susceptibility in the commensurate, two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet at finite temperature. At $M=\infty$ this model possesses deconfined spin-1/2 bosonic spinons (Schwinger bosons), and the susceptibility has a branch cut along the imaginary $k$ axis. We show that in all three scaling regimes at finite $T$, the interaction between spinons and gauge field fluctuations leads to divergent $1/M$ corrections near the branch cut. We identify the most divergent corrections to the susceptibility at each order in $1/M$ and explicitly show that the full static staggered susceptibility has a number of simple poles rather than a branch cut. We compare our results with the $1/N$ expansion for the $O(N)$ sigma-model.
