Cross-Phase Modulation Instability in PM ANDi Fiber-Based Supercontinuum Generation

We demonstrate broadband supercontinuum generation in an all-normal dispersion polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber and we report the observation of a cross-phase modulation instability sideband that is generated outside of the supercontinuum bandwidth. We demonstrate this sideband is polarized on the slow axis and can be suppressed by pumping on the fiber's fast axis. We theoretically confirm and model this nonlinear process using phase-matching conditions and numerical simulations, obtaining good agreement with the measured data.

Delocalized SPM rogue waves in normal dispersion cascaded supercontinuum generation

In the numerical modelling of cascaded mid-infrared (IR) supercontinuum generation (SCG) we have studied how an ensemble of spectrally and temporally distributed solitons from the long-wavelength part of an SC evolves and interacts when coupled into the normal dispersion regime of a highly nonlinear chalcogenide fiber. This has revealed a novel fundamental phenomenon - the generation of a temporally and spectrally delocalized high energy rogue wave in the normal dispersion regime in the form of a strongly self-phase-modulation (SPM) broadened pulse. Along the local SPM shape the rogue wave is localized both temporally and spectrally. We demonstrate that this novel form of rogue wave is generated by inter-pulse Raman amplification between the SPM lobes of the many pulses causing the initially most delayed pulse to swallow the energy of all the other pulses. We further demonstrate that this novel type of rogue wave generation is a key effect in efficient long-wavelength mid-IR SCG based on the cascading of SC spectra and demonstrate how the mid-IR SC spectrum can be shaped by manipulating the rogue wave.

Deep-UV to mid-IR supercontinuum generation driven by mid-IR ultrashort pulses in a gas-filled fiber

Supercontinuum (SC) generation based on ultrashort pulse compression constitutes one of the most promising technologies towards an ultra-wide bandwidth, high-brightness and spatially coherent light sources for applications such as spectroscopy and microscopy. Here, multi-octave SC generation in a gas-filled hollow-core antiresonant fiber (HC-ARF) is reported spanning from 200 nm in the deep ultraviolet (DUV) to 4000 nm in the mid-infrared (mid-IR). A measured average output power of 5 mW was obtained by pumping at the center wavelength of the first anti-resonance transmission window (2460 nm) with ~100 fs pulses and an injected pulse energy of ~7-8 μJ. The mechanism behind the extreme spectral broadening relies upon intense soliton-plasma nonlinear dynamics which leads to efficient soliton self-compression and phase-matched dispersive wave (DW) emission in the DUV region. The strongest DW is observed at 275 nm having an estimated pulse energy of 1.42 μJ, corresponding to 28.4 % of the total output energy. Furthermore, the effect of changing the pump pulse energy and gas pressure on the nonlinear dynamics and their direct impact on SC generation was investigated. The current work paves a new way towards novel investigations of gas-based ultrafast nonlinear optics in the emerging mid-IR spectral regime.

Tuning quadratic nonlinear photonic crystal fibers for zero group-velocity mismatch

We consider an index-guiding silica photonic crystal fiber with a triangular air-hole structure and a poled quadratic nonlinearity. By tuning the pitch and the relative hole size, second-harmonic generation with zero group-velocity mismatch is found for any fundamental wavelength above 780 nm. The phase-velocity mismatch has a lower limit with coherence lengths in the micron range. The dimensionless nonlinear parameter is inversely proportional to the pitch and proportional to the relative hole size. Selected cases show bandwidths suitable for 20 fs pulse-conversion with conversion efficiencies as high as 25%/mW.
