Via a functor from certain Lorentzian to Riemannian manifolds, we obtain a finiteness result.
This note is about a little extension of Nash's embedding theorem in the case of complete manifolds.
The purpose of this article is to present a result on the existence of Cauchy temporal functions invariant by the action of a compact group of conformal transformations in arbitrary globally hyperbolic manifolds. Moreover, the previous results about the existence of Cauchy temporal functions with additional properties on arbitrary globally hyperbolic manifolds are unified in a fully general theorem. The article is written as self-contained as possible, no prior knowledge on Lorentzian geometry is assumed.
We give a simple way to extend index-theoretical statements from partial differential operators with smooth coefficients to operators with coefficients of finite Sobolev order.
We consider (compact or noncompact) Lorentzian manifolds whose holonomy group has compact closure. Among other results, we obtain that this property is equivalent to admitting a parallel timelike vector field. We also derive some properties of the space of all such metrics on a given manifold.
We consider the Cauchy problem of massless Dirac-Maxwell equations on an asymptotically flat background and give a global existence and uniqueness theorem for initial values small in an appropriate weighted Sobolev space. The result can be extended via analogous methods to Dirac-Higgs-Yang-Mills theories.
The fermionic signature operator is analyzed on globally hyperbolic Lorentzian surfaces. The connection between the spectrum of the fermionic signature operator and geometric properties of the surface is studied. The findings are illustrated by simple examples and counterexamples.
Not only the Dirac operator, but also the spinor bundle of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold depends on the underlying metric. This leads to technical difficulties in the study of problems where many metrics are involved, for instance in variational theory. We construct a natural finite dimensional bundle, from which all the metric spinor bundles can be recovered including their extra structure. In the Lorentzian case, we also give some applications to Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell theory as a variational theory and show how to coherently define a maximal Cauchy development for this theory.
We show that on every manifold, every conformal class of semi-Riemannian metrics contains a metric $g$ such that each $k$-th-order covariant derivative of the Riemann tensor of $g$ has bounded absolute value $a_k$. This result is new also in the Riemannian case, where one can arrange in addition that $g$ is complete with injectivity and convexity radius greater than 1. One can even make the radii rapidly increasing and the functions $a_k$ rapidly decreasing at infinity. We prove generalizations to foliated manifolds, where curvature, second fundamental form and injectivity radius of the leaves can be controlled similarly. Moreover, we explain a general principle that can be used to obtain analogous results for Riemannian manifolds equipped with arbitrary other additional geometric structures instead of foliations.
We define different notions of black holes, event horizons and Killing horizons for a general time-oriented manifold $(M,g)$ extending previous notions but without the assumption of asymptotical flatness. The notions of 'horizon' are always conformally invariant while the notions of 'black hole' are genuinely geometric. Some connections between the different notions are found. Finally, we put the definitions into the context of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture.
The intention of this article is to give a flavour of some global problems in General Relativity. We cover a variety of topics, some of them related to the fundamental concept of 'Cauchy hypersurfaces': (1) structure of globally hyperbolic spacetimes, (2) the relativistic initial value problem, (3) constant mean curvature surfaces, (4) singularity theorems, (5) cosmic censorship and Penrose inequality, (6) spinors and holonomy.
This note tries to give an answer to the following question: Is there a sufficiently rich class of metric vector spaces such that sufficiently large spaces of continuous linear maps between them are metrizable?
We consider the future causal boundary as a tool to find obstructions to conformal extensions, the latter being a slight generalization to conformal compactifications.
In this article, existence results concerning temporal functions with additional properties on a globally hyperbolic manifold are obtained. These properties are certain bounds on geometric quantities as lapse and shift. The results are linked to completeness properties and the existence of closed isometric embeddings in Minkowski spaces.
In this short note, a question of patching together globally hyperbolic manifolds is adressed which appeared in the context of the construction of Hadamard states.
We characterize those spacetimes which admit a isometric (or conformal) embedding in some Lorentz-Minkowski space L^N. In particular, any globally hyperbolic spacetime can be isometrically embedded in L^N. This is proven by a result of its own interest: the construction of a smooth time function whose gradient is bounded away from zero -and, thus, an orthogonal global splitting of the spacetime with bounded lapse. The role of the so-called "folk problems on smoothability" is stressed.
The aim of this article is to present the category of bounded Frechet manifolds in respect to which we will review the geometry of Frechet manifolds with a stronger accent on its metric aspect. An inverse function theorem in the sense of Nash and Moser in this category is proved, and some applications to Riemannian geometry are given.
In this paper we examine the structure of Riemannian manifolds with a special kind of Codazzi tensors. We use them to construct globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds with complete Cauchy hypersurfaces for any weakly irreducible holonomy representation with parallel spinors, i.e. with a holonomy group which is a semidirect product between $\R^{n-2}$ and one of $\1, SU(k), Sp(1), G_2$ and $Spin(7)$.
In this note a proof is given for global existence and uniqueness of minimal surfaces of Lorentzian type from a cylinder into globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds for given initial values up to the first derivatives.
Aim of this note is to extract cohomological information about the manifold $Emb(M,N)$ from the topology of the target manifold N. For special conditions, a monomorphism $H^1 (N) \to H^1 (Emb(M,N))$ is constructed.
A new class of 3-manifold invariants is constructed from representations of the category of framed tangles.
