The Ginzburg temperature of ionic fluids revisited

Using the collective variables method we revisit the estimates of the Ginzburg temperature for the Coulomb-dominated models of ionic fluids. We consider the charge-asymmetric primitive model supplemented by short-range attractive interactions in the vicinity of the gas-liquid critical point. For this model, we derive the effective Ising-like $ϕ^{4}$-model Hamiltonian expressed in terms of the collective variables describing the fluctuation modes of the total number density. We obtain the explicit expressions for all the Hamiltonian coefficients within the framework of the same approximation, namely, the one-loop approximation which produces the mean-field critical parameters. Based on this Hamiltonian, we consistently calculate the reduced Ginzburg temperature $t_{G}$ for both the pure Coulombic model (a restricted primitive model) and the pure solvophobic model (a hard-sphere square-well model) as well as for the model parameters ranging between these two limiting cases. Contrary to the previous theoretical estimates, we obtain the reduced Ginzburg temperature for the pure Coulombic model to be about 20 times smaller than for the pure solvophobic model. For the full model including the short-range attractive and long-range Coulomb interactions, we show that $t_{G}$ approaches the value found for the pure Coulombic model when the strength of the Coulomb interactions becomes large enough. Our results suggest a key role of the Coulomb interactions in the crossover behaviour observed experimentally in ionic fluids as well as confirm the Ising-like criticality in the Coulomb-dominated ionic systems.

Effect of mesoscopic fluctuations on equation of state in cluster-forming systems

Equation of state for systems with particles self-assembling into aggregates is derived within a mesoscopic theory combining density functional and field-theoretic approaches. We focus on the effect of mesoscopic fluctuations in the disordered phase. The pressure -- volume fraction isotherms are calculated explicitly for two forms of the short-range attraction long-range repulsion potential. Mesoscopic fluctuations lead to an increased pressure in each case, except for very small volume fractions. When large clusters are formed, the mechanical instability of the system is present at much higher temperature than found in mean-field approximation. In this case phase separation competes with the formation of periodic phases (colloidal crystals). In the case of small clusters, no mechanical instability associated with separation into dilute and dense phases appears.

Statistical field theory for a multicomponent fluid: The collective variables approach

Using the collective variables (CV) method the basic relations of statistical field theory of a multicomponent non-homogeneous fluids are reconsidered. The corresponding CV action depends on two sets of scalar fields - fields $ρ_α$ connected to the local density fluctuations of the $α$th species of particles and fields $ω_α$ conjugated to $ρ_α$. The explicit expressions for the CV field correlations and their relation to the density correlation functions are found. The perturbation theory is formulated and a mean field level (MF) of the theory is considered in detail.

Ionic fluids: charge and density correlations near gas-liquid criticality

The correlation functions of an ionic fluid with charge and size asymmetry are studied within the framework of the random phase approximation. The results obtained for the charge-charge correlation function demonstrate that the second-moment Stillinger-Lovett (SL) rule is satisfied away from the gas-liquid critical point (CP) but not, in general, at the CP. However in the special case of a model without size assymetry the SL rules are satisfied even at the CP. The expressions for the density-density and charge-density correlation functions valid far and close to the CP are obtained explicitely.
