Maxwell field $ \mathbf{E}$ in a two-dimensional polar fluid in the presence of an external field $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{E}} $ : a Monte-Carlo study

We study a two-dimensional system of dipolar hard disks in the presence of a uniform external electric field $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{E}} $ by Monte Carlo simulations in a square with periodic boundary conditions. The study is performed in both the fluid at high temperature and the phase of living polymers at low temperature. In the considered geometry the macroscopic Maxwell field $ \mathbf{E}$ is computed and found to be equal to the external field $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{E}} $ in both phases. The dielectric properties of the system in the liquid phase as well as in the polymeric phase are investigated.

Electrostatics on the sphere with applications to Monte Carlo simulations of two dimensional polar fluids

We present two methods for solving the electrostatics of point charges and multipoles on the surface of a sphere, \textit{i.e.} in the space $\mathcal{S}_{2}$, with applications to numerical simulations of two-dimensional polar fluids. In the first approach, point charges are associated with uniform neutralizing backgrounds to form neutral pseudo-charges, while, in the second, one instead considers bi-charges, \textit{i.e.} dumbells of antipodal point charges of opposite signs. We establish the expressions of the electric potentials of pseudo- and bi-charges as isotropic solutions of the Laplace-Beltrami equation in $\mathcal{S}_{2}$. A multipolar expansion of pseudo- and bi-charge potentials leads to the electric potentials of mono- and bi-multipoles respectively. These potentials constitute non-isotropic solutions of the Laplace-Beltrami equation the general solution of which in spherical coordinates is recast under a new appealing form. We then focus on the case of mono- and bi-dipoles and build the theory of dielectric media in $\mathcal{S}_{2}$. We notably obtain the expression of the static dielectric constant of a uniform isotropic polar fluid living in $\mathcal{S}_{2}$ in term of the polarization fluctuations of subdomains of $\mathcal{S}_{2}$. We also derive the long range behavior of the equilibrium pair correlation function under the assumption that it is governed by macroscopic electrostatics. These theoretical developments find their application in Monte Carlo simulations of the $2D$ fluid of dipolar hard spheres. Some preliminary numerical experiments are discussed with a special emphasis on finite size effects, a careful study of the thermodynamic limit, and a check of the theoretical predictions for the asymptotic behavior of the pair correlation function.

Monte Carlo Simulations of the two-dimensional dipolar fluid

We study a two-dimensional fluid of dipolar hard disks by Monte Carlo simulations in a square with periodic boundary conditions and on the surface of a sphere. The theory of the dielectric constant and the asymptotic behaviour of the equilibrium pair correlation function in the fluid phase is derived for both geometries. After having established the equivalence of the two methods we study the stability of the liquid phase in the canonical ensemble. We give evidence of a phase made of living polymers at low temperatures and provide a tentative phase diagram.

A new dipolar potential for numerical simulations of polar fluids on the $4\mathrm{D}$ hypersphere

We present a new method for Monte Carlo or Molecular Dynamics numerical simulations of three dimensional polar fluids. The simulation cell is defined to be the surface of the northern hemisphere of a four-dimensional (hyper)sphere. The point dipoles are constrained to remain tangent to the sphere and their interactions are derived from the basic laws of electrostatics in this geometry. The dipole-dipole potential has two singularities which correspond to the following boundary conditions : when a dipole leaves the northern hemisphere at some point of the equator, it reappears at the antipodal point bearing the same dipole moment. We derive all the formal expressions needed to obtain the thermodynamic and structural properties of a polar liquid at thermal equilibrium in actual numerical simulation. We notably establish the expression of the static dielectric constant of the fluid as well as the behavior of the pair correlation at large distances. We report and discuss the results of extensive numerical Monte Carlo simulations for two reference states of a fluid of dipolar hard spheres and compare these results with previous methods with a special emphasis on finite size effects.

Critical line of the $Φ^4$ scalar field theory on a 4D cubic lattice in the local potential approximation

We establish the critical line of the one-component $Φ^4$ (or Landau-Ginzburg) model on a simple four dimensional cubic lattice. Our study is performed in the framework of the non-perturbative renormalization group in the local potential approximation with a soft infra-red regulator. The transition is found to be of second order even in the Gaussian limit where first order would be expected according to some recent theoretical predictions.

Critical line of the $Φ^4$ theory on a simple cubic lattice in the local potential approximation

We establish the critical line of the one-component $Φ^4$ (or Landau-Ginzburg) model on the simple cubic lattice in three dimensions. Our study is performed in the framework of the non-perturbative renormalization group in the local potential approximation. Soft as well as ultra-sharp infra-red regulators are both considered. While the latter gives poor results, the critical line given by the soft cut-off compares well with the Monte Carlo simulations data of Hasenbusch (J. Phys. A : Math. Gen. 32 (1999) 4851) with a relative error of, at worst, $\sim 3. 10^{-3}$ on published points (critical parameters) of this line.

Link between New Versions of the Hierarchical Reference Theory of Liquids and of the Non Perturbative Renormalization Group in Statistical Field Theory

I propose a new version of the Hierarchical Reference Theory of liquids. Two formalisms, one in the grand canonical ensemble, the other in the framework of statistical field theory are given in parallel. In the latter the theory is an avatar of a new version of the non perturbative renormalization group (J. Phys. A : Math. Gen. \textbf{42}, 225004 (2009)). The flow of the Wilsonian action as well as that of the effective average action of Wetterich are derived and a simple relation between the two functionals is established. The standard Hierarchical Reference Theory for liquids (\textit{Adv. Phys.} \textbf{44}, 211 (1995)) is recovered for a sharp infra-red cut-off of the propagator

The non-perturbative renormalization group in the ordered phase

We study some analytical properties of the solutions of the non perturbative renormalization group flow equations for a scalar field theory with $Z_2$ symmetry in the ordered phase, i.e. at temperatures below the critical temperature. The study is made in the framework of the local potential approximation. We show that the required physical discontinuity of the magnetic susceptibility $χ(M)$ at $M=\pm M_0$ ($M_0$ spontaneous magnetization) is reproduced only if the cut-off function which separates high and low energy modes satisfies to some restrictive explicit mathematical conditions; we stress that these conditions are not satisfied by a sharp cut-off in dimensions of space $d<4$.

A statistical field theory approach applied to the liquid vapor interface

Last years, there has been a renewed interest in the utilization of statistical field theory methods for the description of systems at equilibrium both in the vicinity and away from critical points, in particular in the field of liquid state physics. These works deal in general with homogeneous systems, although recently the study of liquids in the vicinity of hard walls has also been considered in this way. On the other hand, effective Hamiltonian pertaining to the $ϕ^4$ theory family have been written and extensively used for the description of inhomogeneous systems either at the simple interface between equilibrium phases or for the description of wetting. In the present work, we focus on a field theoretical description of the liquid vapor interface of simple fluids. We start from the representation of the grand partition function obtained from the Hubbard-Stratonovich transform leading to an exact formulation of the problem, namely neither introducing an effective Hamiltonian nor associating the field to the one-body density of the liquid. Using as a reference system the hard sphere fluid and imposing the coexistence condition, the expansion of the Hamiltonian obtained yields a usual $ϕ^4$ theory without unknown parameter. An important point is that the so-called capillary wave theory appears as an approximation of the one-loop theory in the functional expansion of the Hamiltonian, without any need to an underlying phenomenology.

An accurate equation of state for the one component plasma in the low coupling regime

An accurate equation of state of the one component plasma is obtained in the low coupling regime $0 \leq Γ\leq 1$. The accuracy results from a smooth combination of the well-known hypernetted chain integral equation, Monte Carlo simulations and asymptotic analytical expressions of the excess internal energy $u$. In particular, special attention has been brought to describe and take advantage of finite size effects on Monte Carlo results to get the thermodynamic limit of $u$. This combined approach reproduces very accurately the different plasma correlation regimes encountered in this range of values of $Γ$. This paper extends to low $Γ$'s an earlier Monte Carlo simulation study devoted to strongly coupled systems for $1 \leq Γ\leq 190$ ({J.-M. Caillol}, {J. Chem. Phys.} \textbf{111}, 6538 (1999)). Analytical fits of $u(Γ)$ in the range $0 \leq Γ\leq 1$ are provided with a precision that we claim to be not smaller than $p= 10^{-5}$. HNC equation and exact asymptotic expressions are shown to give reliable results for $u(Γ)$ only in narrow $Γ$ intervals, i.e. $0 \leq Γ\lesssim 0.5$ and $0 \leq Γ\lesssim 0.3$ respectively.

Exact Renormalization Group : A New Method for Blocking the Action

We consider the exact renormalization group for a non-canonical scalar field theory in which the field is coupled to the external source in a special non linear way. The Wilsonian action and the average effective action are then simply related by a Legendre transformation up to a trivial quadratic form. An exact mapping between canonical and non-canonical theories is obtained as well as the relations between their flows. An application to the theory of liquids is sketched.

Statistical field theory for liquid vapor interface

A statistical field theory for an inhomogeneous liquid, a planar liquid/vapor interface, is devised from first principles. The grand canonical partition function is represented via a Hubbard-Stratonovitch tranformation leading, close to the critical point, to the usual $ϕ^4$ scalar field theory which is then rigorously considered at the one-loop level. When further simplified it yields the well-known capillary wave theory without any ad hoc phenomenological parameter. Internal coherence of the one-loop approximation is discussed and good overall qualitative agreement with recent numerical simulations is stressed.

Liquid-vapour transition of the long range Yukawa fluid

Two liquid state theories, the self-consistent Ornstein-Zernike equation (SCOZA) and the hierarchical reference theory (HRT) are shown, by comparison with Monte Carlo simulations, to perform extremely well in predicting the liquid-vapour coexistence of the hard core Yukawa (HCY) fluid when the interaction is long range. The long range of the potential is treated in the simulations using both an Ewald sum and hyperspherical boundary conditions. In addition, we present an analytical optimised mean field theory which is exact in the limit of an infinitely long range interaction. The work extends a previous one by Caccamo et al [Phys. Rev. E,60, 5533 (1999)] for short range interactions.

Statistical field theory for a multicomponent fluid: The collective variables approach

Using the collective variables (CV) method the basic relations of statistical field theory of a multicomponent non-homogeneous fluids are reconsidered. The corresponding CV action depends on two sets of scalar fields - fields $ρ_α$ connected to the local density fluctuations of the $α$th species of particles and fields $ω_α$ conjugated to $ρ_α$. The explicit expressions for the CV field correlations and their relation to the density correlation functions are found. The perturbation theory is formulated and a mean field level (MF) of the theory is considered in detail.

Liquid-vapor transition of systems with mean field universality class

We have considered a system where the interaction, v(r) = v_IS(r) + xi^2 v_MF(r), is given as a linear combination of two potentials, each of which being characterized with a well-defined critical behavior: for v_IS(r) we have chosen the potential of the restricted primitive model which is known to belong to the Ising 3D (IS) universality class, while for v_MF(r) we have considered a long-range interaction in the Kac-limit, displaying mean field (MF) behavior. We study the performance of two theoretical approaches and of computer simulations in the critical region for this particular system and give a detailed comparison between theories and simulation of the critical region and the location of the critical point. Both, theory and simulation give evidence that the system belongs to the MF universality class for any positive value of xi and that it shows only non-classical behavior for xi=0. While in this limiting case theoretical approaches are known to fail, we find good agreement for the critical properties between the theoretical approaches and the simulations for xi^2 larger than 0.05.

Non-Perturbative Renormalization Group for Simple Fluids

We present a new non perturbative renormalization group for classical simple fluids. The theory is built in the Grand Canonical ensemble and in the framework of two equivalent scalar field theories as well. The exact mapping between the three renormalization flows is established rigorously. In the Grand Canonical ensemble the theory may be seen as an extension of the Hierarchical Reference Theory (L. Reatto and A. Parola, \textit{Adv. Phys.}, \textbf{44}, 211 (1995)) but however does not suffer from its shortcomings at subcritical temperatures. In the framework of a new canonical field theory of liquid state developed in that aim our construction identifies with the effective average action approach developed recently (J. Berges, N. Tetradis, and C. Wetterich, \textit{Phys. Rep.}, \textbf{363} (2002)).

Ionic fluids: charge and density correlations near gas-liquid criticality

The correlation functions of an ionic fluid with charge and size asymmetry are studied within the framework of the random phase approximation. The results obtained for the charge-charge correlation function demonstrate that the second-moment Stillinger-Lovett (SL) rule is satisfied away from the gas-liquid critical point (CP) but not, in general, at the CP. However in the special case of a model without size assymetry the SL rules are satisfied even at the CP. The expressions for the density-density and charge-density correlation functions valid far and close to the CP are obtained explicitely.
