Double Perovskite Structure Induced by Co Addition to PbTiO$_3$ : Insights from DFT and Experimental Solid State NMR Spectroscopy

The effects of Co addition on the chemical and electronic structure of PbTiO$_3$ were explored both by theory and through experiment. Cobalt was incorporated to PbTiO$_3$ during sol gel process. The XRD data of the compounds confirmed the perovskite structure for the pure samples. The XRD lines broadened and showed emerging cubic-like features as the Co incorporation increased. The changes in the XRD pattern were interpreted as double perovskite structure formation. $^{207}$Pb NMR measurements revealed a growing isotropic component in the presence of Co. In line with the experiments, DFT calculated chemical-shift values corroborate isotropic coordination of Pb suggesting the formation of cubic Pb$_2$CoTiO$_6$ domains in the prepared samples. The state-of-the-art hybrid functional first-principles calculations indicate formation of Pb$_2$CoTiO$_6$ with cubic structure and confirms that Co addition can decrease oxygen binding energy significantly. Experimental UV-Vis spectroscopy results indicate that upon addition of Co, the band gap is shifted towards visible wavelengths which was confirmed by the energy bands and absorption spectra calculations. The oxygen binding energies were determined by temperature programmed reduction (TPR) measurements. Upon addition of Co, TPR lines shifted to lower temperatures and new features appeared in the TPR patterns. This shift was interpreted as weakening of oxygen cobalt bond strength. The change in the electronic structure by the alterations of oxygen vacancy formation energy and bond lengths upon Co insertion are determined by DFT calculations.

Local entanglement and String Order Parameter in dimerized models

In this letter, we propose an application of String Order Parameter (SOP), commonly used in quantum spin systems, to identify symmetry-protected topological phase (SPT) in fermionic systems in the example of the dimerized fermionic chain. As a generalized form of dimerized model, we consider a one-dimensional spin-1/2 XX model with alternating spin couplings. We employ Jordan-Wigner fermionization to map this model to the spinless Su-Schrieffer-Heeger fermionic model (SSH) with generalized hopping signs. We demonstrate a phase transition between a trivial insulating phase and the Haldane phase by the exact analytical evaluation of reconstructed SOPs which are represented as determinants of Toeplitz matrices with the given generating functions. To get more insight into the topological quantum phase transition (tQPT) and microscopic correlations, we study the pairwise concurrence as a local entanglement measure of the model. We show that the first derivative of the concurrence has a non-analytic behaviour in the vicinity of the tQPT, like in the second order trivial QPTs.

Apparent corrugation variations in moiré patterns of dislocated graphene on Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite and the origin of the van Hove singularities of the moiré system

Moiré patterns on Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite surfaces due to dislocated graphene layers were studied. We observed that the apparent corrugations of the moiré patterns in scanning tunnelling microscopy images change as a function of tunnel junction bias. A simple geometric investigation of the atomic structure of the graphene layers generating moiré patterns revealed that different atomic arrangements due to different twist angles can result in similar geometric moiré periods such that, only a small fraction of the observed moiré periodicities may coincide with the real atomic periodicity generating the moiré system. Ab initio calculations showed that the band structure of moiré patterns exhibit the fingerprints of those of bilayer graphene system preserving the Dirac cone. Moreover, our calculations in view of the correct atomistic modelling of the moiré patterns showed that van Hove singularities in twisted bilayer graphene system with varying angles have different origins in their respective band structures. Consequently, our results shed light on the graphene like behaviour of the top most dislocated graphene layer on HOPG surfaces by showing that the layer does not act alone but the final graphene bilayer has electronic properties partially resembling graphene.

DFT study of noble metal impurities on TiO_2(110)

Atomic and electronic structures of TiO_2(110) surface with possible adsorptional, substitutional and interstitial Au or Pt elemental impurities at full and one-sixth monolayer concentrations were investigated by density functional theory calculations using the projector augmented wave approach within the plane wave method. Relative thermodynamic stabilities of such phases have been discussed by means of their surface free energies. Our results suggest that tunable photocatalytic activity can be achieved on Pt atom admixed rutile (110) surface at low coverages.
