Photon--Matter Quantum Correlations in Spontaneous Raman Scattering

We develop a Hamiltonian formalism to study energy and position/momentum correlations between a single Stokes photon and a single material excitation that are created as a pair in the spontaneous Raman scattering process. Our approach allows for intuitive separation of the effects of spectral linewidth, chromatic dispersion, and collection angle on these correlations, and we compare the predictions of the model to experiment. These results have important implications for the use of Raman scattering in quantum protocols that rely on spectrally unentangled photons and collective excitations.

Polarization-entangled photon-pair generation in commercial-grade polarization-maintaining fiber

We demonstrate a fiber-based source of polarization-entangled photon pairs at visible wavelengths suitable for integration with local quantum processing schemes. The photons are created through birefringent phase-matching in spontaneous four-wave mixing inside a Sagnac interferometer. We address entanglement degradation due to temporal distinguishability of the photons to enable the generation of a spectrally unfiltered polarization-entangled photon-pair state with $95.86\pm0.10%$ fidelity to a maximally entangled Bell state, evaluated with a tomographic state reconstruction without applying any corrections or background subtractions. Owing to the large birefringence of the fiber, photons are created far detuned from the pump, where Raman contamination is negligible. This source's spatial mode and ability to produce spectrally uncorrelated photons make it suitable for implementing quantum information protocols over free-space and fiber-based networks.

High-performance single-photon generation with commercial-grade optical fiber

High-quality quantum sources are of paramount importance for the implementation of quantum technologies. We present here a heralded single-photon source based on commercial-grade polarization-maintaining optical fiber. The heralded photons exhibit a purity of at least 0.84 and an unprecedented heralding efficiency into single-mode fiber of 85%. The birefringent phase-matching condition of the underlying four-wave mixing process can be controlled mechanically to optimize the wavelength tuning needed for interfacing multiple sources, as are required for large-scale entanglement generation.

Photon pair generation in birefringent optical fibers

We study both experimentally and theoretically the generation of photon pairs by spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in standard birefringent optical fibers. The ability to produce a range of two-photon spectral states, from highly correlated (entangled) to completely factorable, by means of cross-polarized birefringent phase matching, is explored. A simple model is developed to predict the spectral state of the photon pair which shows how this can be adjusted by choosing the appropriate pump bandwidth, fiber length and birefringence. Spontaneous Raman scattering is modeled to determine the tradeoff between SFWM and background Raman noise, and the predicted results are shown to agree with experimental data.

Atom Lithography with Near-Resonant Light Masks: Quantum Optimization Analysis

We study the optimal focusing of two-level atoms with a near resonant standing wave light, using both classical and quantum treatments of the problem. Operation of the focusing setup is considered as a nonlinear spatial squeezing of atoms in the thin- and thick-lens regimes. It is found that the near-resonant standing wave focuses the atoms with a reduced background in comparison with far-detuned light fields. For some parameters, the quantum atomic distribution shows even better localization than the classical one. Spontaneous emission effects are included via the technique of quantum Monte Carlo wave function simulations. We investigate the extent to which non-adiabatic and spontaneous emission effects limit the achievable minimal size of the deposited structures.
