Stiffness and coherence length measurements of ultra-thin superconductor, and implications to layered superconductors

Based on the London equation, we use a rotor-free vector potential ${\bf A}$, and current measurements by a SQUID, to determine the superconducting Pearl length $Λ$, and coherence length $ξ$, of ultra-thin, ring shaped, MoSi films, as a function of thickness $d$ and temperature $T$. We find that $ξ$ is a function of $d$ with a jump at $ξ\sim d \sim 5$nm. At base temperature the superconducting stiffness, defined by $1/λ^2=1/(Λd)$, is an increasing function of $T_c$. Similar behavior, known as the Uemura plot, exist in bulk layered superconductors, but with doping as an implicit parameter. We also provide the critical exponents of $Λ(T)$.

The coherence of quantum dot confined electron- and hole-spin in low external magnetic field

We investigate experimentally and theoretically the temporal evolution of the spin of the conduction band electron and that of the valence band heavy hole, both confined in the same semiconductor quantum dot. In particular, the coherence of the spin purity in the limit of a weak externally applied magnetic field, comparable in strength to the Overhauser field due to fluctuations in the surrounding nuclei spins. We use an all-optical pulse technique to measure the spin evolution as a function of time after its initialization. We show for the first time that the spin purity performs complex temporal oscillations which we quantitatively simulate using a central spin model. Our model encompasses the Zeeman and the hyperfine interactions between the spin and the external and Overhauser fields, respectively. Our novel studies are essential for the design and optimization of quantum-dot-based entangled multi-photon sources. Specifically, cluster and graph states, which set stringent limitations on the magnitude of the externally applied field.

Nano-NMR based flow meter

Microfludic channels are now a well established platform for many purposes, including bio-medical research and Lab on a Chip applications. However, the nature of flow within these channels is still unclear. There is evidence that the mean drift velocity in these channels deviates from the regular Navier-Stokes solution with `no slip' boundary conditions. Understanding these effects, is not only of value for fundamental fluid mechanics interest, but it also has practical importance for the future development of microfluidic and nanofludic infrastructures. We propose a nano-NMR based setup for measuring the drift velocity near the surface of a microfludic channel in a non-intrusive fashion. We discuss different possible protocols, and provide a detailed analysis of the measurement's sensitivity in each case. We show that the nano-NMR scheme outperforms current fluorescence based techniques.

A relativistically exact Eikonal equation for optical fibers with application to adiabatically deforming ring interferometers

We derive the relativistically exact Eikonal equation for ring interferometers undergoing deformations. For ring interferometers that undergo slow deformation we describe the two leading terms in the adiabatic expansion of the phase shift. The leading term is independent of the refraction index $n$ and is given by a line integral generalizing results going back to Sagnac \cite{sagnac1913,wang2004,Ori} for non-deforming interferometers to all orders in {$β=|\mathbf{v}|/c$}. In the non-relativistic limit {this term} is $O(β)$. The next term in the adiabaticity has the form of a double integral, it is of order $β^0$ and depends on the refractive index $n$. It accounts for non-reciprocity due to changing circumstances in the fiber. The adiabatic correction is often comparable to the Sagnac term. In particular, this is the case in Fizeau's interferometer. Besides providing a mathematical framework that puts all ring interferometers under a single umbrella, our results generalize and strengthen results of \cite{Ori, shupe} to fibers with chromatic dispersion.

Deterministic Generation of a Cluster State of Entangled Photons

We use semiconductor quantum dots, "artificial atoms," to implement a scheme for deterministic generation of long strings of entangled photons in a cluster state, an important resource for quantum information processing. We demonstrate a prototype device which produces strings of a few hundred photons in which the entanglement persists over 5 sequential photons. The implementation follows a proposal by Lindner and Rudolph (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2009) which suggested periodic timed excitation of a precessing electron spin as a mechanism for entangling the electron spin with the polarization of the sequentially emitted photons. In our realization, the entangling qubit is a quantum dot confined dark exciton. By performing full quantum process tomography, we obtain the process map which fully characterizes the evolution of the system, containing the dark exciton and n photons after n applications of the periodic excitations. Our implementation may greatly reduce the resources needed for quantum information processing.

Superoscillations underlying remote state preparation for relativistic fields

We present a physical (gedanken) implementation of a generalized remote state preparation of relativistic quantum field states for an arbitrary set of observers. The prepared states are created in regions that are outside the future light-cone of the generating region. The mechanism, which is based on utilizing the vacuum state of a relativistic quantum field as a resource, sheds light on the well known Reeh-Schlieder theorem, indicating its strong connection with the mathematical phenomenon of superoscillations.

The Aharonov Casher Effect: The Case of g not equal to 2

The Aharonov Casher effect predicts the existence in two dimensions of ceil(Phi/2pi) -1 bounded zero modes associated with a magnetic flux Phi. Aharonov and Casher discussed the case of gyromagnetic factor equals 2, we will discuss the general case of any gyromagnetic factor. As a simple model, we study the case where the magnetic field lies in a thin annulus. First we examine the wavefunctions of the zero-energy bounded states, predicted by the Aharonov Casher Effect for electrons with gyromagnetic ratio equal 2. We then calculate the wave function and energies for a gyromagnetic ratio g not equal to 2. We give the dependence of the bound states energies on g and the angular momentum. Finally, we provide an order of magnitude estimations for the binding energies.

Process Tomography for Systems in a Thermal State

We propose a new method for implementing process tomography that is based on the information extracted from temporal correlations between observables, rather than on state preparation and state tomography. As such, the approach is applicable to systems that are in a mixed state, and in particular to thermal states. We illustrate the method for an arbitrary evolution described by Kraus operators, as well as for simpler cases such as a general Gaussian channels, and qubit dynamics.
