Phase estimation algorithm for the multibeam optical metrology

Unitary Fourier transform lies at the core of the multitudinous computational and metrological algorithms. Here we show experimentally how the unitary Fourier transform-based phase estimation protocol, used namely in quantum metrology, can be translated into the classical linear optical framework. The developed setup made of beam splitters, mirrors and phase shifters demonstrates how the classical coherence, similarly to the quantum coherence, poses a resource for obtaining information about the measurable physical quantities. Our study opens route to the reliable implementation of the small-scale unitary algorithms on path-encoded qudits, thus establishing an easily accessible platform for unitary computation.

Fano Interference at the Excitation of Coherent Phonons: Relation between the Asymmetry Parameter and the Initial Phase of Coherent Oscillations

The theoretical assertion that the Fano asymmetry parameter and the asymptotic initial phase of a harmonic oscillator interacting with a continuum are interrelated is experimentally verified. By an example of coherent fully symmetric A1g phonons in bismuth that are excited by ultrashort laser pulses at liquid helium temperature, it is demonstrated that, for negative values of the asymmetry parameter, the asymptotic phase increases as the modulus of the parameter decreases.

Polarization dependence of coherent phonon generation and detection in the 3D topological insulator Bi2Te3

We have studied the polarization dependence of coherent phonons in the topological insulator Bi2Te3. Using polarization-dependent femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, we measured coherent phonons as a function of angle when the pump and probe polarizations were fixed, and the crystal orientation was rotated. For isotropic detection, depending on the spot position, oscillations either from only low- and high-frequency phonons of A1g symmetry, or in addition from the mode at 3.6 THz were observed. All the modes were found to be independent of the orientation of electric field vector with respect to the crystal axes testifying to their full symmetry while no modes of lower symmetry appeared in any polarization geometry. For anisotropic detection both modes of Eg symmetry could be detected, but their amplitudes were considerably smaller than those of A1g symmetry. To clarify the coherent phonon assignment and the process of coherent phonon generation in Bi2Te3, the time-domain measurements were complemented by spontaneous Raman scattering. The comparison of frequency- and time-domain results and the polarization dependence suggest that the 3.6 THz mode belongs to crystalline Te arising due to tellurium segregation. A discrepancy between the time- and frequency domain data is discussed.

Generation of coherent phonons in bismuth by ultrashort laser pulses in the visible and NIR: displacive versus impulsive excitation mechanism

We have applied femtosecond pump-probe technique with variable pump wavelength to study coherent lattice dynamics in Bi single crystal. Comparison of the coherent amplitude as a function of pump photon energy for two different in symmetry Eg and A1g phonon modes with respective spontaneous resonance Raman profiles reveals that their generation mechanisms are quite distinct. We show that displacive excitation, which is the main mechanism for the generation of coherent A1g phonons, cannot be reduced to the Raman scattering responsible for the generation of lower symmetry coherent lattice modes

Power law decay and phase rigidity for large-amplitude coherent phonons in bismuth at helium temperature: Possible evidence for transient supersolid state

Intense ultrafast laser excitation can produce transient states of condensed matter that would otherwise be inaccessible. At high excitation level, the interatomic forces can be altered resulting in an unusual lattice dynamics. Here we report the study of coherent lattice dynamics in Bi made for various excitation levels at helium temperature. We demonstrate that under certain conditions the fully symmetric phonons of large amplitude exhibit anomalous decay and phase rigidity, both of which possibly signaling the attainment of transient supersolid state.
