Uniform impurity scattering in two-band s±s_\pm and s++s_{++} superconductors

The s±s_\pm and s++s_{++} models for the superconducting state are subject of intense studies regarding Fe-based superconductors. Depending on the parameters, disorder may leave intact or suppress TcT_c in these models. Here we study the special case of disorder with equal values of intra- and interband impurity potentials in the two-band s±s_\pm and s++s_{++} models. We show that this case can be considered as an isolated point and TcT_c there has maximal damping for a wide range of parameters.

Unexpected impact of magnetic disorder on multiband superconductivity

We analyze how the magnetic disorder affects the properties of the two-band s±s_\pm and s++s_{++} models, which are subject of hot discussions regarding iron-based superconductors and other multiband systems like MgB2_2. We show that there are several cases when the transition temperature TcT_c is not fully suppressed by magnetic impurities in contrast to the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory, but a saturation of TcT_c takes place in the regime of strong disorder. These cases are: (1) the purely interband impurity scattering, (2) the unitary scattering limit. We show that in the former case the s±s_\pm gap is preserved, while the s++s_{++} state transforms into the s±s_\pm state with increasing magnetic disorder. For the case (2), the gap structure remains intact.

Manifestation of impurity induced s_{+-} -> s_{++} transition: multiband model for dynamical response functions

We investigate effects of disorder on the density of states, the single particle response function and optical conductivity in multiband superconductors with s_{+-} symmetry of the order parameter, where s_{+-} -> s_{++} transition may take place. In the vicinity of the transition the superconductive gapless regime is realized. It manifests itself in anomalies in the above mentioned properties. As a result, intrinsically phase-insensitive experimental methods like ARPES, tunneling and terahertz spectroscopy may be used for revealing of information about the underlying order parameter symmetry.

Comment on "Infrared signature of the superconducting gap symmetry in iron-arsenide superconductors", Y. M. Dai et al. arXiv:1106.4430

Y. M. Dai et al. in their recent work arXiv:1106.4430 presented a reflectivity study of the in-plance optical conductivity of a Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2\textrm{Ba}_{0.6}\textrm{K}_{0.4}\textrm{Fe}_2\textrm{As}_2 (BKFA) superconductor with Tc≈39KT_{\textrm{c}}\approx39K. The single crystals used in this study are of high quality and the measurements are rather accurate. The authors analyzed the optical conductivity of BKFA in the framework of the Mattis-Bardeen theory and the BCS theory of superconductivity. This analysis, however, generates a series of severe contradictions with a large body of experimental data obtained with multiple probes as well as misuses both the Mattis-Bardeen and the BCS theories of superconductivity beyond their approximation regions.

Disorder induced transition between s_+- and s_++ states in two-band superconductors

We have reexamined the problem of disorder in two-band superconductors, and shown within the framework of the T-matrix approximation, that the suppression of T_c can be described by a single parameter depending on the intraband and interband impurity scattering rates. T_c is shown to be more robust against nonmagnetic impurities than would be predicted in the trivial extension of Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory. We find a disorder-induced transition from the s_{\pm} state to a gapless and then to a fully gapped s_{++} state, controlled by a single parameter -- the sign of the average coupling constant <λ> . We argue that this transition has strong implications for experiments.

Eliashberg approach to superconductivity-induced infrared anomalies in Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2

We report the full complex dielectric function of high-purity Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2\textrm{Ba}_{0.68}\textrm{K}_{0.32}\textrm{Fe}_2\textrm{As}_2 single crystals with Tc=38.5 KT_{\mathrm{c}}=38.5\ \textrm{K} determined by wide-band spectroscopic ellipsometry at temperatures 10≤T≤300 K10\leq T\leq300\ \textrm{K}. We discuss the microscopic origin of superconductivity-induced infrared optical anomalies in the framework of a multiband Eliashberg theory with two distinct superconducting gap energies 2ΔA≈6 kBTc2Δ_{\mathrm{A}}\approx6\ k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{c}} and 2ΔB≈2.2 kBTc2Δ_{\mathrm{B}}\approx2.2\ k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{c}}. The observed unusual suppression of the optical conductivity in the superconducting state at energies up to 14 kBTc14\ k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{c}} can be ascribed to spin-fluctuation--assisted processes in the clean limit of the strong-coupling regime.

Normal state resistivity of Ba1−x_{1-x}Kx_xFe2_2As2_2: evidence for multiband strong-coupling behavior

We present theoretical analysis of the normal state resistivity in multiband superconductors in the framework of Eliashberg theory. The results are compared with measurements of the temperature dependence of normal state resistivity of high-purity Ba0.68_{0.68}K0.32_{0.32}Fe2_{2}As2_{2} single crystals with the highest reported transition temperature TcT_c = 38.5 K. The experimental data demonstrate strong deviations from the Bloch-Grüneisen behavior, namely the tendency to saturation of the resistivity at high temperatures. The observed behavior of the resistivity is explained within the two band scenario when the first band is strongly coupled and relatively clean, while the second band is weakly coupled and is characterized by much stronger impurity scattering.

Bosonic Spectral Function and The Electron-Phonon Interaction in HTSC Cuprates

In Part I we discuss accumulating experimental evidence related to the structure and origin of the bosonic spectral function in high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) cuprates at and near optimal doping. Some global properties of the spectral function, such as number and positions of peaks, are extracted by combining optics, neutron scattering, ARPES and tunnelling measurements. These methods give convincing evidence for strong electron-phonon interaction (EPI) with the coupling constant between 1-3 in cuprates near optimal doping. Here we clarify how these results are in favor of the Eliashberg-like theory for HTSC cuprates near optimal doping. In Part II we discuss some theoretical ingredients - such as strong EPI, strong correlations - which are necessary to explain the experimental results related to the mechanism of d-wave pairing in optimally doped cuprates. These comprise the Migdal-Eliashberg theory for EPI in strongly correlated systems which give rise to the forward scattering peak. The latter is further supported by the weakly screened Madelung interaction in the ionic-metallic structure of layered cuprates. In this approach EPI is responsible for the strength of pairing while the residual Coulomb interaction (by including spin fluctuations) triggers the d-wave pairing.

Specific heat of Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2: evidence for multiband strong-coupling superconductivity

The specific heat of high-purity Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2\rm Ba_{0.68}K_{0.32}Fe_2As_2 single crystals with the highest reported superconducting TcT_c = 38.5 K was studied. The electronic specific heat, CpC_p, below TcT_c shows two gap features, with Δ1≈11Δ_1 \approx 11 meV and Δ2≈3.5Δ_2 \approx 3.5 meV obtained from an αα-model analysis. The reduced gap value, 2Δmax/kBTc≈6.62Δ^{\rm max} / k_B T_c \approx 6.6, the magnitude of the specific heat jump, ΔCp(Tc)/TcΔC_p(T_c)/T_c, and its slope below TcT_c exhibit strong-coupling character. We also show that an Eliashberg model with two hole and two electron bands gives the correct values of TcT_c, the superconducting gaps, and the temperature dependence of the free-energy difference.

Andreev spectra and subgap bound states in multiband superconductors

The theory of Andreev conductance is formulated for junctions involving normal metals (N) and multiband superconductors (S) and applied to the case of superconductors with nodeless extended s±s_{\pm}-wave order parameter symmetry, as possibly realized in the recently discovered ferro pnictides. We find qualitative differences from tunneling into s-wave or d-wave superconductors that may help to identify such a state. First, interband interference leads to a suppression of Andreev reflection in the case of a highly transparent N/S interface and to a current deficit in the tunneling regime. Second, surface bound states may appear, both at zero and at non-zero energies. These effects do not occur in multiband superconductors without interband sign reversal, though the interference can still strongly modify the conductance spectra.

Electron-Phonon Properties of Pnictide Superconductors

In this paper we discuss the normal and superconducting state properties of two pnictide superconductors, LaOFeAs and LaONiAs, using Migdal-Eliashberg theory and density functional perturbation theory. For pure LaOFeAs, the calculated electron-phonon coupling constant λ=0.21λ=0.21 and logarithmic-averaged frequency ωln=206Kω_{ln}=206 K, give a maximum TcT_c of 0.8 K, using the standard Migdal-Eliashberg theory. Inclusion of multiband effects increases the Tc only marginally. To reproduce the experimental TcT_c, a 5-6 times larger coupling constant would be needed. Our results indicate that standard electron-phonon coupling is not sufficient to explain superconductivity in the whole family of Fe-As based superconductors. At the same time, the electron-phonon coupling in Ni-As based compounds is much stronger and its normal and superconducting state properties can be well described by standard Migdal-Eliashberg theory.

Microwave response of superconducting pnictides: extended s±s_{\pm} scenario

We consider a two-band superconductor with relative phase ππ between the two order parameters as a model for the superconducting state in ferropnictides. Within this model we calculate the microwave response and the NMR relaxation rate. The influence of intra- and interband impurity scattering beyond the Born and unitary limits is taken into account. We show that, depending on the scattering rate, various types of power law temperature dependencies of the magnetic field penetration depth and the NMR relaxation rate at low temperatures may take place.

Critical temperature and giant isotope effect in presence of paramagnons

We reconsider the long-standing problem of the effect of spin fluctuations on the critical temperature and isotope effect in a phonon-mediated superconductor. Although the general physics of the interplay between phonons and paramagnons had been rather well understood, the existing approximate formulas fail to describe the correct behavior of % T_{c} for general phonon and paramagnon spectra. Using a controllable approximation, we derive an analytical formula for TcT_{c} which agrees well with exact numerical solutions of the Eliashberg equations for a broad range of parameters. Based on both numerical and analytical results, we predict a strong enhancement of the isotope effect when the frequencies of spin fluctuation and phonons are of the same order. This effect may have important consequences for near-magnetic superconductors such as MgCNi3_{3}

ARPES kink is a "smoking gun" for the theory of high-Tc superconductors: dominance of the electron-phonon interaction with forward scattering peak

The ARPES spectra in high-Tc superconductors show four distinctive features in the quasiparticle self-energy. All of them can be explained consistently by the theory in which the electron phonon interaction (EPI) with the forward scattering peak dominates over the Coulomb scattering. In particular, this theory explains why there is no shift of the nodal kink at 70 meV in the superconducting state, contrary to the clear shift of the anti-nodal singularity at 40 meV. The theory predicts a ``knee''-like structure of the imaginary part of the self-energy, which is phonon dominated for ω≈ωph(70)ω\approx ω^{(70)}_{ph}, and shows linear behavior for ω>ωph(70)ω> ω^{(70)}_{ph} - due to the Coulomb scattering. Recent ARPES spectra give that the EPI coupling constant is much larger than the Coulomb one. The dip-hump structure in the spectral function comes out naturally from the proposed theory.

Anisotropic impurities in anisotropic superconductors

Physical properties of anisotropic superconductors like the critical temperature and others depend sensitively on the electron mean free path. The sensitivity to impurity scattering and the resulting anomalies are considered a characteristic feature of strongly anisotropic pairing. These anomalies are usually analyzed in terms of s-wave impurity scattering which leads to universal pair breaking effects depending on only two scattering parameters, the mean free path and the impurity cross section. We investigate here corrections coming from anisotropies in the scattering cross section, and find not only quantitative but also qualitative deviations from universal s-wave isotropic pairbreaking. The properties we study are the transition temperature, the density of states, quasiparticle bound states at impurities, and pinning of flux lines by impurities.

Forward Electron-Phonon Scattering in Normal and Superconducting States

The sharp forward electron-phonon (FEP)(FEP) and impurity (FIS)(FIS) scattering change the normal and superconducting properties significantly. The pseudo-gap like features are present in the density of states for ω<Ωω<Ω, where ΩΩ is the phonon frequency. The superconducting critical temperature TcT_c, due to the FEPFEP pairing, is linear with respect to the electron-phonon coupling constant. The FISFIS impurities are pair weakening for s−s- and d−waved-wave pairing.

Evidence for strong electron-phonon coupling and polarons in the optical response of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

The normal state optical response of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 is found to be consistent with a simple multi-component model, based on free carriers with strong electron-phonon interaction, localized polaronic states near 0.15 eV and a mid-infrared band at 0.5 eV. Normal state reflectance and absorbance of La_{1.83}Sr_{0.17}CuO_4 are investigated and their temperature dependence is explained. Both, the ac and dc response are recovered and the quasi-linear behavior of the optical scattering rate up to 3000- 4000 cm^{-1} is found to be consistent with strong electron-phonon interaction, which also accounts for the value of T_c. Although not strictly applicable in the superconducting state, our simple model accounts for the observed penetration depth and the optical response below T_c can be recovered by introducing a small amount of additional carriers. Our findings suggest that the optical response of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 could be explained both, in the normal and superconducting state, by a simple multi-fluid model with strong electron-phonon interaction if the gap symmetry and the temperature dependence of the 0.5 eV mid-infrared band are adequately taken into account.
