Unusual slow magnetic fluctuations and critical slowing down in Sr2_{2}Ir1−x_{1-x}Rhx_{x}O4_{4}

Hidden magnetic order of Sr2_2Ir1−x_{1-x}Rhx_xO4_4, x=0.05x = 0.05 and 0.1, has been studied using muon spin relaxation spectroscopy. In zero applied field and weak longitudinal fields (μ0HL≲2μ_0H_L \lesssim 2~mT), muon spin relaxation data can be well described by exponentially-damped static Lorentzian Kubo-Toyabe functions, indicating that static and dynamic local fields coexist at each muon site. For μ0HL≳2μ_0H_L \gtrsim 2~mT, the static rate is completely decoupled, and the exponential decay is due to dynamic spin fluctuations. In both zero field and μ0HL=1μ_0H_L = 1--2~mT, the temperature dependencies of the exponential muon spin relaxation rate exhibit maxima at 215~K for x=0.05x = 0.05 and 175~K for x=0.1x = 0.1, suggesting critical slowing down of electronic spin fluctuations. The field dependencies of the dynamic spin fluctuation rates can be well described by the Redfield relation. The correlation time of this electronic spin fluctuation is in the range of~2--5~ns for Sr2_2Ir0.9_{0.9}Rh0.1_{0.1}O4_4, and shorter than 2~ns for Sr2_2Ir0.95_{0.95}Rh0.05_{0.05}O4_4. The rms fluctuating field is on the order of 1 mT, which is consistent with the polarized neutron diffraction cross-section.

Quantum Criticality and Inhomogeneous Magnetic Order in Fe-doped alpha-YbAlB4

The intermediate-valent polymorphs αα- and ββ-YbAlB4_4 exhibit quantum criticality and other novel properties not usually associated with intermediate valence. Iron doping induces quantum criticality in αα-YbAlB4_4 and magnetic order in both compounds. We report results of muon spin relaxation (μμSR) experiments in the intermediate-valent alloys αα-YbAl1−x_{1-x}Fex_xB4_4, x=0.014x = 0.014 and 0.25. For x=0.014x = 0.014 we find no evidence for magnetic order down to 25 mK\@. The dynamic muon spin relaxation rate λdλ_d exhibits a power-law temperature dependence λd∝T−aλ_d \propto T^{-a}, a=0.40(4)a = 0.40(4), in the temperature range 100 mK--2 K, in disagreement with predictions by theories of antiferromagnetic (AFM) or valence quantum critical behavior. For x=0.25x = 0.25, where AFM order develops in the temperature range 7.5--10 K, where we find coexistence of meso- or macroscopically segregated paramagnetic and AFM phases, with considerable disorder in the latter down to 2 K.

Superconducting gap structure in ambient-pressure-grown LaO0.5F0.5BiS2\mathrm{LaO_{0.5}F_{0.5}BiS_{2}}

We have performed transverse-field muon spin relaxation (TF-μμSR) measurements on ambient-pressure-grown polycrystalline LaO0.5F0.5BiS2\mathrm{LaO_{0.5}F_{0.5}BiS_{2}}. From these measurements, no signature of magnetic order is found down to 25 mK. The value of the magnetic penetration depth extrapolated to 0 K is 0.89 (5) μμm. The temperature dependence of superconducting penetration depth is best described by either a multigap s + s-wave model with Δ1Δ_{1} = 0.947 (7) meV and Δ2Δ_{2} = 0.22 (4) meV or the ansiotropic s-wave model with Δ(0)Δ(0) = 0.776 meV and anisotropic gap amplitude ratio Δmin/ΔmaxΔ_{min}/Δ_{max} = 0.34. Comparisons with other potentially multigap BiS2\mathrm{BiS_{2}}-based superconductors are discussed. We find that these BiS2\mathrm{BiS_{2}}-based superconductors, including Bi4O4S3\mathrm{Bi_{4}O_{4}S_3} and the high-pressure synthesized LaO0.5F0.5BiS2\mathrm{LaO_{0.5}F_{0.5}BiS_{2}}, generally conform to the Uemura relation.

Unstable Spin-Ice Order in the Stuffed Metallic Pyrochlore Pr2+x_{2+x}Ir2−x_{2-x}O7−δ_{7-δ}

Specific heat, elastic neutron scattering, and muon spin rotation (μμSR) experiments have been carried out on a well-characterized sample of "stuffed" (Pr-rich) Pr2+x_{2+x}Ir2−x_{2-x}O7−δ_{7-δ}. Elastic neutron scattering shows the onset of long-range spin-ice "2-in/2-out" magnetic order at TM=0.93T_M = 0.93 K, with an ordered moment of 1.7(1)μBμ_\mathrm{B}/Pr ion at low temperatures. Approximate lower bounds on the correlation length and correlation time in the ordered state are 170 Å and 0.7 ns, respectively. μμSR experiments yield an upper bound 2.6(7) mT on the local field Bloc4fB_\mathrm{loc}^{4f} at the muon site, which is nearly two orders of magnitude smaller than the expected dipolar field for long-range spin-ice ordering of 1.7μBμ_B moments (120--270 mT, depending on muon site). This shortfall is due in part to splitting of the non-Kramers crystal-field ground-state doublets of near-neighbor Pr3+^{3+} ions by the μ+μ^+-induced lattice distortion. For this to be the only effect, however, ∼\sim160 Pr moments out to a distance of ∼\sim14 Å must be suppressed. An alternative scenario, which is consistent with the observed reduced nuclear hyperfine Schottky anomaly in the specific heat, invokes slow correlated Pr-moment fluctuations in the ordered state that average Bloc4fB_\mathrm{loc}^{4f} on the μμSR time scale (∼10−7{\sim}10^{-7} s), but are static on the time scale of the elastic neutron scattering experiments (∼10−9{\sim}10^{-9} s). In this picture the dynamic muon relaxation suggests a Pr3+^{3+} 4f4f correlation time of a few nanoseconds, which should be observable in a neutron spin echo experiment.

Landau Renormalizations of Superfluid density in Heavy Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn5

The formation of heavy fermion bands can occur by means of the conversion of a periodic array of local moments into itinerant electrons via the Kondo effect and the huge consequent Fermi-liquid renormalizations. Leggett predicted for liquid 3^3He that Fermi-liquid renormalizations change in the superconducting state, leading to a temperature dependence of the London penetration depth~ΛΛ quite different from that in the BCS theory. Using Leggett's theory, as modified for heavy fermions, it is possible to extract from the measured temperature dependence of ΛΛ in high quality samples both Landau parameters F0sF_0^s and F1sF_1^s; this has never been accomplished before. A modification of the temperature dependence of the specific heat CelC_\mathrm{el}, related to that of ΛΛ, is also expected. We have carefully determined the magnitude and temperature dependence of ΛΛ in CeCoIn5_5 by muon spin relaxation rate measurements to obtain F0s=36±1F_0^s = 36 \pm 1 and F1s=1.2±0.3F_1^s = 1.2 \pm 0.3, and find a consistent change in the temperature dependence of electronic specific heat CelC_\mathrm{el}. This, the first determination of F1sF_1^s with a value~≪F0s\ll F_0^s in a heavy fermion compound, tests the basic assumption of the theory of heavy fermions, that the frequency dependence of the self-energy is much more important than its momentum dependence.

Magnetism of PdNi alloys near the critical concentration for ferromagnetism

We report results of a muon spin rotation and relaxation (μμSR) study of dilute Pd1−x_{1-x}Nix_x alloys, with emphasis on Ni concentrations x=x = 0.0243 and 0.025. These are close to the critical value xcrx_\mathrm{cr} for the onset of ferromagnetic long-range order (LRO), which is a candidate for a quantum critical point. The 2.43 and 2.5 at.% Ni alloys exhibit similar μμSR properties. Both samples are fully magnetic, with average muon local fields ⟨Bloc⟩=\langle B^\mathrm{loc}\rangle = 2.0 and 3.8 mT and Curie temperatures TC=T_C = 1.0 and 2.03 K for 2.43 and 2.5 at.% Ni, respectively, at T=0T = 0. The temperature dependence of ⟨Bloc⟩\langle B^\mathrm{loc}\rangle suggests ordering of Ni spin clusters rather than isolated spins. Just above TCT_C a two-phase region is found with separate volume fractions of quasistatic short-range order (SRO) and paramagnetism. The SRO fraction decreases to zero with increasing temperature a few kelvin above TCT_C. This mixture of SRO and paramagnetism is consistent with the notion of an inhomogeneous alloy with Ni clustering. The measured values of TCT_C extrapolate to xcrx_\mathrm{cr} = 0.0236 ±\pm 0.0027. The dynamic muon spin relaxation in the vicinity of TCT_C differs for the two samples: a relaxation-rate maximum at TCT_C is observed for xx = 0.0243, reminiscent of critical slowing down, whereas for x=x = 0.025 no dynamic relaxation is observed within the μμSR time window. The data suggest a mean-field-like transition in this alloy.

Muon spin rotation and relaxation in Pr1−x_{1-x}Ndx_xOs4_4Sb12_{12}: Magnetic and superconducting ground states

Muon spin rotation and relaxation (μμSR) experiments have been carried out to characterize magnetic and superconducting ground states in the Pr1−x_{1-x}Ndx_xOs4_4Sb12_{12} alloy series. In the ferromagnetic end compound NdOs4_4Sb12_{12} the spontaneous local field at positive-muon (μ+μ^+) sites below the ordering temperature TCT_C is greater than expected from dipolar coupling to ferromagnetically aligned Nd3+^{3+} moments, indicating an additional indirect RKKY-like transferred hyperfine mechanism. For 0.45 ≤x≤\le x \le 0.75, μ+μ^+ spin relaxation rates in zero and weak longitudinal applied fields indicate that static fields at μ+μ^+ sites below TCT_C are reduced and strongly disordered. We argue this is unlikely to be due to reduction of Nd3+^{3+} moments, and speculate that the Nd3+^{3+}-μ+μ^+ interaction is suppressed and disordered by Pr doping. In an xx = 0.25 sample, which is superconducting below TcT_c = 1.3 K, there is no sign of "spin freezing" (static Nd3+^{3+} magnetism), ordered or disordered, down to 25 mK. Dynamic μ+μ^+ spin relaxation is strong, indicating significant Nd-moment fluctuations. The μ+μ^+ diamagnetic frequency shift and spin relaxation in the superconducting vortex-lattice phase decrease slowly below TcT_c, suggesting pair breaking and/or possible modification of Fermi-liquid renormalization by Nd spin fluctuations. For 0.25 ≤x≤\le x \le 0.75, the μμSR data provide evidence against phase separation; superconductivity and Nd3+^{3+} magnetism coexist on the atomic scale.

Muon spin rotation and relaxation in Pr1−x_{1-x}Ndx_xOs4_4Sb12_{12}: Paramagnetic states

Positive-muon (μ+μ^+) Knight shifts have been measured in the paramagnetic states of Pr1−x_{1-x}Ndx_xOs4_4Sb12_{12} alloys, where x=x = 0, 0.25, 0.45, 0.50, 0.55, 0.75, and 1.00. In Pr-substituted NdOs4_4Sb12_{12} (x≤x \le 0.75), but not in NdOs4_4Sb12_{12}, Clogston-Jaccarino plots of μ+μ^+ Knight shift~KK versus magnetic susceptibility~χχ exhibit an anomalous saturation of K(χ)K(χ) at ∼−\sim-0.5% for large susceptibilities (low temperatures), indicating a reduction of the coupling strength between μ+μ^+ spins and 4f4f paramagnetism for temperatures ≲\lesssim 15~K. We speculate that itinerant Pr3+^{3+} quadrupolar excitations, invoked to mediate the superconducting Cooper-pair interaction, might modify the μ+μ^+-4f4f ion indirect spin-spin interaction.

Spin dynamics and spin freezing in the triangular lattice antiferromagnets FeGa2S4 and NiGa2S4

Magnetic susceptibility and muon spin relaxation (muSR) experiments have been carried out on the quasi-2D triangular-lattice spin S = 2 antiferromagnet FeGa2S4. The muSR data indicate a sharp onset of a frozen or nearly-frozen spin state at T* = 31(2) K, twice the spin-glass-like freezing temperature T_f = 16(1) K. The susceptibility becomes field dependent below T*, but no sharp anomaly is observed in any bulk property. A similar transition is observed in muSR data from the spin-1 isomorph NiGa2S4. In both compounds the dynamic muon spin relaxation rate lambda_d(T) above T* agrees well with a calculation of spin-lattice relaxation by Chubukov, Sachdev, and Senthil in the renormalized classical regime of a 2D frustrated quantum antiferromagnet. There is no firm evidence for other mechanisms. At low temperatures lambda_d(T) becomes temperature independent in both compounds, indicating persistence of spin dynamics. Scaling of lambda_d(T) between the two compounds is observed from ~T_f to ~1.5T*. Although the muSR data by themselves cannot exclude a truly static spin component below T*, together with the susceptibility data they are consistent with a slowly-fluctuating "spin gel" regime between T_f and T*. Such a regime and the absence of a divergence in lambda_d(T) at T* are features of two unconventional mechanisms: (1) binding/unbinding of Z_2 vortex excitations, and (2) impurity spins in a nonmagnetic spin-nematic ground state. The absence of a sharp anomaly or history dependence at T* in the susceptibility of FeGa2S4, and the weakness of such phenomena in NiGa2S4, strongly suggest transitions to low-temperature phases with unconventional dynamics.

Magnetic transition, long-range order, and moment fluctuations in the pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7

Muon spin rotation and relaxation experiments in the pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7 yield a well-defined muon spin precession frequency below the metal-insulator/antiferromagnetic transition temperature TM = 120 K, indicative of long-range commensurate magnetic order and thus ruling out quantum spin liquid and spin-glass-like ground states. The dynamic muon spin relaxation rate is temperature-independent between 2 K and ~TM and yields an anomalously long Ir^{4+} spin correlation time, suggesting a singular density of low-lying spin excitations. Similar behavior is found in other pyrochlores and geometrically frustrated systems, but also in the unfrustrated iridate BaIrO3. Eu2Ir2O7 may be only weakly frustrated; if so, the singularity might be associated with the small-gap insulating state rather than frustration.

Suppression of time reversal symmetry breaking superconductivity in Pr(Os,Ru)_4Sb_12 and (Pr,La)Os_4Sb_12

Zero-field muon spin relaxation experiments have been carried out in the Pr(Os_{1-x}Ru_x)_4Sb_12 and Pr_{1-y}La_yOs_4Sb_12 alloy systems to investigate broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in the superconducting state, signaled by the onset of a spontaneous static local magnetic field B_s. In both alloy series B_s initially decreases linearly with solute concentration. Ru doping is considerably more efficient than La doping, with a ~50% faster initial decrease. The data suggest that broken TRS is suppressed for Ru concentration x >~ 0.6, but persists for essentially all La concentrations. Our data support a crystal-field excitonic Cooper pairing mechanism for TRS-breaking superconductivity.

Magnetic transition and spin fluctuations in the unconventional antiferromagnetic compound Yb3Pt4

Muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements have been carried out on the unconventional antiferromagnet Yb_3Pt_4. Oscillations are observed below T_N = 2.22(1) K, consistent with the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Neel temperature observed in bulk experiments. In agreement with neutron diffraction experiments the oscillation frequency omega_ mu(T) follows a S = 1/2 mean-field temperature dependence, yielding a quasistatic local field 1.71(2) kOe at T = 0. A crude estimate gives an ordered moment of ~0.66 mu_B at T = 0, comparable to 0.81 mu_B from neutron diffraction. As T approaches T_N from above the dynamic relaxation rate lambda_d exhibits no critical slowing down, consistent with a mean-field transition. In the AFM phase a T-linear fit to lambda_d(T), appropriate to a Fermi liquid, yields highly enhanced values of lambda_d/T and the Korringa constant K_ mu^2 T/lambda_d, with K_ mu the estimated muon Knight shift. A strong suppression of lambda_d by applied field is observed in the AFM phase. These properties are consistent with the observed large Sommerfeld-Wilson and Kadowaki-Woods ratios in Yb_3Pt_4 (although the data do not discriminate between Fermi-liquid and non-Fermi-liquid states), and suggest strong enhancement of q ~ 0 spin correlations between large-Fermi-volume band quasiparticles in the AFM phase of Yb_3Pt_4.

Penetration depth, multiband superconductivity, and absence of muon-induced perturbation in superconducting PrOs4_{4}Sb12_{12}

Transverse-field muon spin rotation (μμSR) experiments in the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} (Tc=1.85T_{c}=1.85 K) suggest that the superconducting penetration depth λ(T)λ(T) is temperature-independent at low temperatures, consistent with a gapped quasiparticle excitation spectrum. In contrast, radiofrequency (rf) inductive measurements yield a stronger temperature dependence of λ(T)λ(T), indicative of point nodes in the gap. This discrepancy appears to be related to the multiband structure of PrOs4_{4}Sb12_{12}. Muon Knight shift measurements in PrOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} suggest that the perturbing effect of the muon charge on the neighboring Pr3+^{3+} crystalline electric field is negligibly small, and therefore is unlikely to cause the difference between the μμSR and rf results.
