SPIRou: nIR velocimetry & spectropolarimetry at the CFHT

This paper presents an overview of SPIRou, the new-generation near-infrared spectropolarimeter / precision velocimeter recently installed on the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). Starting from the two main science goals, namely the quest for planetary systems around nearby M dwarfs and the study of magnetized star / planet formation, we outline the instrument concept that was designed to efficiently address these forefront topics, and detail the in-lab and on-sky instrument performances measured throughout the intensive testing phase that SPIRou was submitted to before passing the final acceptance review in early 2019 and initiating science observations. With a central position among the newly started programmes, the SPIRou Legacy Survey (SLS) Large Programme was allocated 300 CFHT nights until at least mid 2022. We also briefly describe a few of the first results obtained in the various science topics that SPIRou started investigating, focusing in particular on planetary systems of nearby M dwarfs, transiting exoplanets and their atmospheres, magnetic fields of young stars, but also on alternate science goals like the atmospheres of M dwarfs and the Earth's atmosphere. We finally conclude on the essential role that SPIRou and the CFHT can play in coordination with forthcoming major facilities like the JWST, the ELTs, PLATO and ARIEL over the decade.

2D kinematics of the edge-on spiral galaxy ESO 379-G006

We present a kinematical study of the nearly edge-on galaxy ESO 379-G006 that shows the existence of extraplanar ionized gas. With Fabry-Perot spectroscopy at H-alpha, we study the kinematics of ESO 379-G006 using velocity maps and position-velocity diagrams parallel to the major and to the minor axis of the galaxy. We build the rotation curve of the disk and discuss the role of projection effects due to the fact of viewing this galaxy nearly edge-on. The twisting of the isovelocities in the radial velocity field of the disk of ESO 379-G006 as well as the kinematic asymmetries found in some position-velocity diagrams parallel to the minor axis of the galaxy suggest the existence of deviations to circular motions in the disk that can be modeled and explained with the inclusion of a radial inflow probably generated by a bar or by spiral arms. We succeeded in detecting extraplanar Diffuse Ionized Gas in this galaxy. At the same time, from the analysis of position-velocity diagrams, we found some evidence that the extraplanar gas could lag in rotation velocity with respect to the midplane rotation.

Bar pattern speed and position of the circumnuclear ring in NGC 1097

We present the first galactic-scale model of the gas dynamics of the prototype barred Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC1097. We use large scale FaNTOmM Fabry-Perot interferometric data covering the entire galactic disc and combine the distribution and kinematics maps with high resolution two-dimensional spectroscopy from the Gemini telescope. We build a dynamical model for the gravitational potential by applying the analytic solution to the equations of motion, within the epicyclic approximation. Our model reproduces all the significant kinematic and structural signatures of this galaxy. We find that the primary bar is 7.9+/-0.6 kpc long and has a pattern speed of 36 +/- 2 km s^-1 kpc^-1. This places the corotation radius at 8.6 +/-0.5 kpc, the outer Lindblad resonance at 14.9+/-0.9 kpc and two inner Lindblad resonances at 60+/-5 pc and 2.9+/-0.1 kpc. These derivations lead to a ratio of the corotation radius over bar length of 1.0--1.2, which is in agreement with the predictions of simulations for fast galaxy bars. Our model presents evidence that the circumnuclear ring in this galaxy is not located near any of the resonance radii in this galaxy. The ring might have once formed at the outer inner Lindblad resonance radius, and it has been migrating inward, toward the centre of the galactic gravitational potential.

Deep Fabry-Perot Halpha observations of two Sculptor group galaxies, NGC 247 and NGC 300

It has been suggested that diffuse ionized gas can extend all the way to the end of the HI disc, and even beyond, such as in the case of the warped galaxy NGC 253 (Bland-Hawthorn et al. 1997). Detecting ionized gas at these radii could carry significant implications as to the distribution of dark matter in galaxies. With the aim of detecting this gas, we carried out a deep Halpha kinematical analysis of two Sculptor group galaxies, NGC 247 and NGC 300. The Fabry-Perot data were taken at the 36-cm Marseille Telescope in La Silla, Chile, offering a large field of view. With almost 20 hours of observations for each galaxy, very faint diffuse emission is detected. Typical emission measures of 0.1 cm^-6 pc are reached. For NGC 247, emission extending up to a radius comparable with that of the HI disc (r~13') is found, but no emission is seen beyond the HI disc. For NGC 300, we detect ionized gas on the entirety of our field of view (r_max~14'), and find that the bright HII regions are embedded in a diffuse background. Using the deep data, extended optical rotation curves are obtained, as well as mass models. These are the most extended optical rotation curves thus far for these galaxies. We find no evidence suggesting that NGC 247 has a warped disc, and to account for our non detection of Halpha emission beyond its HI disc, as opposed to the warped galaxy NGC 253, our results favour the model in which only through a warp, ionization by hot young stars in the central region of a galaxy can let photons escape and ionize the interstellar medium in the outer parts.

Deep Hα Observations of NGC 253: a Very Extended and Possibly Declining Rotation Curve?

This study presents a deep Hα kinematical analysis of the Sculptor Group galaxy NGC253. The Fabry-Perot data were taken with the 36-cm Marseille Telescope in La Silla, Chile, using an EMCCD detector. Typical emission measures of ~0.1 cm^-6 pc are reached. The observations allow the detection of the Diffuse Ionized Gas component through [N II] emission at very large radii of 11.5', 12.8' and 19.0', on the receding side of the galaxy. No Hα emission is observed at radii larger than the neutral component (11.5'). The very extended rotation curve confirms previous results and shows signs of a significant decline, on the order of 30 per cent vmax . Using the rotation data, mass models are constructed with and without the outer [N II] data points, and similar results are found. The declining part of the rotation curve is very well modeled, and seems to be truly declining.

Ferromagnetically coupled Shastry-Sutherland quantum spin singlets in (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$

Using inelastic neutron scattering, x-ray, neutron diffraction, and the first-principle calculation techniques, we show that the crystal structure of the two-dimensional quantum spin system (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$ is orthorhombic with $Pbam$ symmetry in which CuCl$_4$O$_2$ octahedra are tilted from their high symmetry positions and the Cu$^{2+} (s = 1/2)$ ions form a distorted square lattice. The dominant magnetic interactions are the fourth nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions with a Cu-Cl--Cl-Cu exchange path, which lead to the formation of spin singlets. The two strongest interactions between the singlets are ferromagnetic, which makes (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$ the first system of ferromagnetically coupled Shastry-Sutherland quantum spin singlets.

Spectral gap induced by structural corrugation in armchair graphene nanoribbons

We study the effects of the structural corrugation or rippling on the electronic properties of undoped armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNR). First, reanalyzing the single corrugated graphene layer we find that the two inequivalent Dirac points (DP), move away one from the other. Otherwise, the Fermi velocity decrease by increasing rippling. Regarding the AGNRs, whose metallic behavior depends on their width, we analyze in particular the case of the zero gap band-structure AGNRs. By solving the Dirac equation with the adequate boundary condition we show that due to the shifting of the DP a gap opens in the spectra. This gap scale with the square of the rate between the high and the wavelength of the deformation. We confirm this prediction by exact numerical solution of the finite width rippled AGNR. Moreover, we find that the quantum conductance, calculated by the non equilibrium Green's function technique vanish when the gap open. The main conclusion of our results is that a conductance gap should appear for all undoped corrugated AGNR independent of their width.

The kinematics of the quadrupolar nebula M1-75 and the identification of its central star

The link between the shaping of bipolar planetary nebulae and their central stars is still poorly understood. The kinematics and shaping of the multipolar nebula M 1-75 are hereby investigated, and the location and nature of its central star are briefly discussed. Fabry-Perot data from GHaFAS on the WHT sampling the Doppler shift of the [N II] 658.3 nm line are used to study the dynamics of the nebula, by means of a detailed 3-D spatio-kinematical model. Multi-wavelength images and spectra from the WFC and IDS on the INT, and from ACAM on the WHT, allowed us to constrain the parameters of the central star. The two pairs of lobes, angularly separated by ~22 degrees, were ejected simultaneously approx. ~3500-5000 years ago, at the adopted distance range from 3.5 to 5.0 kpc. The larger lobes show evidence of a slight degree of point symmetry. The shaping of the nebula could be explained by wind interaction in a system consisting of a post-AGB star surrounded by a disc warped by radiative instabilities. This requires the system to be a close binary or a single star which engulfed a planet as it died. On the other hand, we present broad- and narrow-band images and a low S/N optical spectrum of the highly-reddened, previously unnoticed star which is likely the nebular progenitor. Its estimated V-I colour allows us to derive a rough estimate of the parameters and nature of the central star.

A Virgo high-resolution Halpha kinematical survey: I. NGC 4438

New Halpha emission-line observations of the Virgo cluster galaxy NGC 4438 are presented. Fabry-Perot interferometry data at an effective angular resolution of ~2" are used to map the kinematics of the ionized gas in the galaxy. For the first time we obtain a velocity field covering a large area in NGC 4438, much larger than that deduced from previous HI and CO maps. The kinematics of the extended, low surface brightness Halpha filaments to the West of the galactic disk is discussed. We report on the discovery of a northern Halpha structure which is clumpier than the other filaments. Evidence for multiple spectral components through the data-cube are presented in a nuclear shell and in the approaching half of the disk. The role of VCC 1040, a dwarf elliptical galaxy located to the South of NGC 4438, is presented to investigate the origin of a small-scale stellar tail of NGC 4438. It could be due to a minor tidal interaction between the two galaxies.
