Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana lasing in circuit QED

We demonstrate amplification (and attenuation) of a probe signal by a driven two-level quantum system in the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana regime by means of an experiment, in which a superconducting qubit was strongly coupled to a microwave cavity, in a conventional arrangement of circuit quantum electrodynamics. Two different types of flux qubit, specifically a conventional Josephson junctions qubit and a phase-slip qubit, show similar results, namely, lasing at the working points where amplification takes place. The experimental data are explained by the interaction of the probe signal with Rabi-like oscillations. The latter are created by constructive interference of Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana (LZSM) transitions during the driving period of the qubit. A detailed description of the occurrence of these oscillations and a comparison of obtained data with both analytic and numerical calculations are given.

Correlated emission lasing in harmonic oscillators coupled via a single three-level artificial atom

A single superconducting artificial atom provides a unique basis for coupling electromagnetic fields and photons hardly achieved with a natural atom. Bringing a pair of harmonic oscillators into resonance with transitions of the three-level atom converts atomic spontaneous processes into correlated emission dynamics. We demonstrate two-mode correlated emission lasing on harmonic oscillators coupled via the fully controllable three-level artificial atom. Correlation of two different color emissions reveals itself as equally narrowed linewiths and quench of their mutual phase-diffusion. The mutual linewidth is more than four orders of magnitude narrower than the Schawlow-Townes limit. The interference between the different color lasing fields demonstrates the two-mode fields are strongly correlated.

Charge transport through ultrasmall single and double Josephson junctions coupled to resonant modes of the electromagnetic environment

We have investigated charge transport in ultrasmall superconducting single and double Josephson junctions coupled to resonant modes of the electromagnetic environment. We observe pronounced current peaks in the transport characteristics of both types of devices and attribute them to the process involving simultaneous tunneling of Cooper pairs and photon emission into the resonant modes. The experimental data is well reproduced with the theoretical models.

Damping in high-frequency metallic nanomechanical resonators

We have studied damping in polycrystalline Al nanomechanical resonators by measuring the temperature dependence of their resonance frequency and quality factor over a temperature range of 0.1 - 4 K. Two regimes are clearly distinguished with a crossover temperature of 1 K. Below 1 K we observe a logarithmic temperature dependence of the frequency and linear dependence of damping that cannot be explained by the existing standard models. We attribute these phenomena to the effect of the two-level systems characterized by the unexpectedly long (at least two orders of magnitude longer) relaxation times and discuss possible microscopic models for such systems. We conclude that the dynamics of the two-level systems is dominated by their interaction with one-dimensional phonon modes of the resonators.

Detection of mechanical resonance of a single-electron transistor by direct current

We have suspended an Al based single-electron transistor whose island can resonate freely between the source and drain leads forming the clamps. In addition to the regular side gate, a bottom gate with a larger capacitance to the SET island is placed underneath to increase the SET coupling to mechanical motion. The device can be considered as a doubly clamped Al beam that can transduce mechanical vibrations into variations of the SET current. Our simulations based on the orthodox model, with the SET parameters estimated from the experiment, reproduce the observed transport characteristics in detail.

Electromagnetically induced transparency on a single artificial atom

We present experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) on a single macroscopic artificial "atom" (superconducting quantum system) coupled to open 1D space of a transmission line. Unlike in a optical media with many atoms, the single atom EIT in 1D space is revealed in suppression of reflection of electromagnetic waves, rather than absorption. The observed almost 100 % modulation of the reflection and transmission of propagating microwaves demonstrates full controllability of individual artificial atoms and a possibility to manipulate the atomic states. The system can be used as a switchable mirror of microwaves and opens a good perspective for its applications in photonic quantum information processing and other fields.

Quantum behaviour of a flux qubit coupled to a resonator

We present a detailed theoretical analysis for a system of a superconducting flux qubit coupled to a transmission line resonator. The master equation, accounting incoherent processes for a weakly populated resonator, is analytically solved. An electromagnetic wave transmission coefficient through the system, which provides a tool for probing dressed states of the qubit, is derived. We also consider a general case for the resonator with more than one photon population and compare the results with an experiment on the qubit-resonator system in the intermediate coupling regime, when the coupling energy is comparable with the qubit relaxation rate.

Resonance Fluorescence of a Single Artificial Atom

An atom in open space can be detected by means of resonant absorption and reemission of electromagnetic waves, known as resonance fluorescence, which is a fundamental phenomenon of quantum optics. We report on the observation of scattering of propagating waves by a single artificial atom. The behavior of the artificial atom, a superconducting macroscopic two-level system, is in a quantitative agreement with the predictions of quantum optics for a pointlike scatterer interacting with the electromagnetic field in one-dimensional open space. The strong atom-field interaction as revealed in a high degree of extinction of propagating waves will allow applications of controllable artificial atoms in quantum optics and photonics.

Ultimate on-chip quantum amplifier

We report amplification of electromagnetic waves by a single artificial atom in open 1D space. Our three-level artificial atom -- a superconducting quantum circuit -- coupled to a transmission line presents an analog of a natural atom in open space. The system is the most fundamental quantum amplifier whose gain is limited by a spontaneous emission mechanism. The noise performance is determined by the quantum noise revealed in the spectrum of spontaneous emission, also characterized in our experiments.

Weak continuous monitoring of a flux qubit using coplanar waveguide resonator

We study a flux qubit in a coplanar waveguide resonator by measuring transmission through the system. In our system with the flux qubit decoupled galvanically from the resonator, the intermediate coupling regime is achieved. In this regime dispersive readout is possible with weak backaction on the qubit. The detailed theoretical analysis and simulations give a good agreement with the experimental data and allow to make the qubit characterization.

Quantum oscillations in two coupled charge qubits

Despite an apparent progress in implementing individual solid-state qubits, there have been no experimental reports so far on multi-bit gates required for building a real quantum computer. Here we report a new circuit comprising two coupled charge qubits. Using a pulse technique, we coherently mix quantum states and observe quantum oscillations whose spectrum reflects interaction between the qubits. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of coupling of multiple solid-state qubits and indicate the existence of entangled two-qubit states.
