Large spin Hall magnetoresistance in antiferromagnetic α-Fe2O3/Pt heterostructures

We investigate the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) at room temperature in thin film heterostructures of antiferromagnetic, insulating, (0001)-oriented alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite) and Pt. We measure their longitudinal and transverse resistivities while rotating an applied magnetic field of up to 17T in three orthogonal planes. For out-of-plane magnetotransport measurements, we find indications for a multidomain antiferromagnetic configuration whenever the field is aligned along the film normal. For in-plane field rotations, we clearly observe a sinusoidal resistivity oscillation characteristic for the SMR due to a coherent rotation of the Neel vector. The maximum SMR amplitude of 0.25% is, surprisingly, twice as high as for prototypical ferrimagnetic Y3Fe5O12/Pt heterostructures. The SMR effect saturates at much smaller magnetic fields than in comparable antiferromagnets, making the alpha-Fe2O3/Pt system particularly interesting for room-temperature antiferromagnetic spintronic applications.

Spin transport in a magnetic insulator with zero effective damping

Applications based on spin currents strongly profit from the control and reduction of their effective damping and their transport properties. We here experimentally observe magnon mediated transport of spin (angular) momentum through a 13.4 nm thin yttrium iron garnet film with full control of the magnetic damping via spin-orbit torque. Above a critical spin-orbit torque, the fully compensated damping manifests itself as an increase of magnon conductivity by almost two orders of magnitude. We compare our results to theoretical expectations based on recently predicted current induced magnon condensates and discuss other possible origins of the observed critical behaviour.

Spin Hall magnetoresistance in antiferromagnet/heavy-metal heterostructures

We investigate the spin Hall magnetoresistance in thin film bilayer heterostructures of the heavy metal Pt and the antiferromagnetic insulator NiO. While rotating an external magnetic field in the easy plane of NiO, we record the longitudinal and the transverse resistivity of the Pt layer and observe an amplitude modulation consistent with the spin Hall magnetoresistance. In comparison to Pt on collinear ferrimagnets, the modulation is phase shifted by 90° and its amplitude strongly increases with the magnitude of the magnetic field. We explain the observed magnetic field-dependence of the spin Hall magnetoresistance in a comprehensive model taking into account magnetic field induced modifications of the domain structure in antiferromagnets. With this generic model we are further able to estimate the strength of the magnetoelastic coupling in antiferromagnets. Our detailed study shows that the spin Hall magnetoresistance is a versatile tool to investigate the magnetic spin structure as well as magnetoelastic effects, even in antiferromagnetic multidomain materials.

Detection of spin pumping from YIG by spin-charge conversion in a Au/Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ spin-valve structure

Many experiments have shown the detection of spin-currents driven by radio-frequency spin pumping from yttrium iron garnet (YIG), by making use of the inverse spin-Hall effect, which is present in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling, such as Pt. Here we show that it is also possible to directly detect the resonance-driven spin-current using Au/permalloy (Py, Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$) devices, where Py is used as a detector for the spins pumped across the YIG/Au interface. This detection mechanism is equivalent to the spin-current detection in metallic non-local spin-valve devices. By finite element modeling we compare the pumped spin-current from a reference Pt strip with the detected signals from the Au/Py devices. We find that for one series of Au/Py devices the calculated spin pumping signals mostly match the measurements, within 20%, whereas for a second series of devices additional signals are present which are up to a factor 10 higher than the calculated signals from spin pumping. We also identify contributions from thermoelectric effects caused by the resonant (spin-related) and non-resonant heating of the YIG. Thermocouples are used to investigate the presence of these thermal effects and to quantify the magnitude of the Spin-(dependent-)Seebeck effect. Several additional features are observed, which are also discussed.

Influence of yttrium iron garnet thickness and heater opacity on the nonlocal transport of electrically and thermally excited magnons

We studied the nonlocal transport behavior of both electrically and thermally excited magnons in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) as a function of its thickness. For electrically injected magnons, the nonlocal signals decrease monotonically as the YIG thickness increases. For the nonlocal behavior of the thermally generated magnons, or the nonlocal spin Seebeck effect (SSE), we observed a sign reversal which occurs at a certain heater-detector distance, and it is influenced by both the opacity of the YIG/heater interface and the YIG thickness. Our nonlocal SSE results can be qualitatively explained by the bulk-driven SSE mechanism together with the magnon diffusion model. Using a two-dimensional finite element model (2D-FEM), we estimated the bulk spin Seebeck coefficient of YIG at room temperature. The quantitative disagreement between the experimental and modeled results indicates more complex processes going on in addition to magnon diffusion and relaxation, especially close to the contacts.

Spin-Hall magnetoresistance and spin Seebeck effect in spin-spiral and paramagnetic phases of multiferroic CoCr2O4 films

We report on the spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) and spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in multiferroic CoCr2O4 (CCO) spinel thin films with Pt contacts. We observe a large enhancement of both signals below the spin-spiral (Ts = 28 K) and the spin lock-in transitions (T_{lock_in} = 14 K). The SMR and SSE response in the spin lock-in phase are one order of magnitude larger than those observed at the ferrimagnetic transition temperature (Tc = 94 K), which indicates that the interaction between spins at the Pt|CCO interface is more efficient in the non-collinear magnetic state below Ts and T_{lock-in}. At T > Tc, magnetic field-induced SMR and SSE signals are observed, which can be explained by a high interface susceptibility. Our results show that the spin transport at the Pt|CCO interface is sensitive to the magnetic phases but cannot be explained solely by the bulk magnetization.

Frequency and power dependence of spin-current emission by spin pumping in a thin film YIG/Pt system

This paper presents the frequency dependence of the spin current emission in a hybrid ferrimagnetic insulator/normal metal system. The system is based on a ferrimagnetic insulating thin film of Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG, 200 nm) grown by liquid-phase-epitaxy (LPE) coupled with a normal metal with a strong spin-orbit coupling (Pt, 15 nm). The YIG layer presents an isotropic behaviour of the magnetization in the plane, a small linewidth, and a roughness lower than 0.4 nm. Here we discuss how the voltage signal from the spin current detector depends on the frequency [0.6 - 7 GHz], the microwave power, Pin, [1 - 70 mW], and the in-plane static magnetic field. A strong enhancement of the spin current emission is observed at low frequencies, showing the appearance of non-linear phenomena.

Platinum thickness dependence of the inverse spin-Hall voltage from spin pumping in a hybrid YIG/Pt system

We show the first experimental observation of the platinum (Pt) thickness dependence in a hybrid YIG/Pt system of the inverse spin-Hall effect from spin pumping, over a large frequency range and for different rf powers. From the measurement of the dc voltage ($Δ\textrm{V}$) at the resonant condition and the resistance ($R$) of the Pt layer, a strong enhancement of the ratio $Δ\textrm{V}/R$ has been observed, which is not in agreement with previous studies on the NiFe/Pt system. The origin of this behaviour is still unclear and cannot be explained by the spin transport model that we have used.
