Strong terahertz radiation via rapid polarization reduction in photoinduced ionic-to-neutral transition of tetrathiafulvalene-p-chloranil

Terahertz lights are usually generated through the optical rectification process within a femtosecond laser pulse in non-centrosymmetric materials. Here, we report a new generation mechanism of terahertz lights based upon a photoinduced phase transition (PIPT), in which an electronic structure is rapidly changed by a photoirradiation. When a ferroelectric organic molecular compound, tetrathiafulvalene-p-chloranil, is excited by a femtosecond laser pulse, the ionic-to-neutral transition is driven and simultaneously a strong terahertz radiation is produced. By analyzing the terahertz electric-field waveforms and their dependence on the polarization direction of the incident laser pulse, we demonstrate that the terahertz radiation originates from the ultrafast decrease of the spontaneous polarization in the photoinduced ionic-to-neutral transition. The efficiency of the observed terahertz radiation via the PIPT mechanism is found to be much higher than that via the optical rectification in the same material and in a typical terahertz emitter, ZnTe.

Chirality of Matter Shows Up via Spin Excitations

Right- and left-handed circularly polarized light interact differently with electronic charges in chiral materials. This asymmetry generates the natural circular dichroism and gyrotropy, also known as the optical activity. Here we demonstrate that optical activity is not a privilege of the electronic charge excitations but it can also emerge for the spin excitations in magnetic matter. The square-lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ offers an ideal arena to test this idea, since it can be transformed to a chiral form by application of external magnetic fields. As a direct proof of the field-induced chiral state, we observed large optical activity when the light is in resonance with spin excitations at sub-terahertz frequencies. In addition, we found that the magnetochiral effect, the absorption difference for the light beams propagating parallel and anti-parallel to the applied magnetic field, has an exceptionally large amplitude close to 100%. All these features are ascribed to the magnetoelectric nature of spin excitations as they interact both with the electric and magnetic components of light.

Terahertz radiation by ultrafast spontaneous polarization modulation in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ thin films

Terahertz (THz) radiation has been observed from multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ thin films via ultrafast modulation of spontaneous polarization upon carrier excitation with illumination of femtosecond laser pulses. The radiated THz pulses from BiFeO$_3$ thin films were clarified to directly reflect the spontaneous polarization state, giving rise to a memory effect in a unique style and enabling THz radiation even at zero-bias electric field. On the basis of our findings, we demonstrate potential approaches to ferroelectric nonvolatile random access memory with nondestructive readability and ferroelectric domain imaging microscopy using THz radiation as a sensitive probe.
