Ascending chains of free groups in 3-manifold groups

Takahasi and Higman independently proved that any ascending chain of subgroups of constant rank in a free group must stabilize. Kapovich and Myasnikov gave a proof of this fact in the language of graphs and Stallings folds. Using profinite techniques, Shusterman extended this ascending chain condition to limit groups, which include closed surface groups. Motivated by Kapovich and Myasnikov's proof we provide two new proofs of this ascending chain condition for closed surface groups, and establish the ascending chain condition for free subgroups of constant rank in a closed (or finite-volume hyperbolic) 3-manifold group. Hyperbolic geometry, geometrization, and graphs-of-groups decompositions all play a role in our proofs.

Counting lattices in products of trees

A BMW group of degree $(m,n)$ is a group that acts simply transitively on vertices of the product of two regular trees of degrees $m$ and $n$. We show that the number of commensurability classes of BMW groups of degree $(m,n)$ is bounded between $(mn)^{αmn}$ and $(mn)^{βmn}$ for some $0<α<β$. In fact, we show that the same bounds hold for virtually simple BMW groups. We introduce a random model for BMW groups of degree $(m,n)$ and show that asymptotically almost surely a random BMW group in this model is irreducible and hereditarily just-infinite.

Invariable generation does not pass to finite index subgroups

Using small cancellation methods, we show that the property invariable generation does not pass to finite index subgroups, answering questions of Wiegold and Kantor-Lubotzky-Shalev. We further show that a finitely generated group that is invariably generated is not necessarily finitely invariably generated, answering a question of Cox. The same results were also obtained independently by Minasyan.

The Neretin groups

This is the extended version of the talk we gave during the Arbeitsgemeinschaft on totally disconnected locally compact groups, held in Oberwolfach in October 2014. We give the definition of the Neretin group of spheromorphisms of the infinite $q$-regular tree, and describe its natural totally disconnected group topology, which is not the one that usually appears as the first guess. We also present the proof of simplicity due to Kapoudjian. We do not make any claims concerning the originality of the presented results.

On regular CAT(0) cube complexes

We provide a necessary and sufficient condition on a finite flag simplicial complex, L, for which there exists a unique CAT(0) cube complex whose vertex links are all isomorphic to L. We then find new examples of such CAT(0) cube complexes and prove that their automorphism groups are virtually simple. The latter uses a result, which we prove in the appendix, about the simplicity of certain subgroups of the automorphism group of a rank-one CAT(0) cube complex. This result generalizes previous results by Tits and by Haglund and Paulin.

Resolutions of CAT(0) cube complexes and accessibility properties

In [4], Dunwoody defined resolutions for finitely presented group actions on simplicial trees, that is, an action of the group on a tree with smaller edge and vertex stabilizers. He, moreover, proved that the size of the resolution is bounded by a constant depending only on the group. Extending Dunwoody's definition of patterns we construct resolutions for group actions on a general finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complex. In dimension two, we bound the number of hyperplanes of this resolution. We apply this result for surfaces and 3-manifolds to bound collections of codimension-1 submanifolds.
