Nonequilibrium electrical, thermal and spin transport in open quantum systems of topological superconductors, semiconductors and metals

We study nonequilibrium transport in various open quantum systems whose systems and leads/baths are made of topological superconductors (TSs), semiconductors, and metals. Using quantum Langevin equations and Green's function method, we derive exact expressions for steady-state electrical, thermal, and spin current at the junctions between a system and leads. We validate these current expressions by comparing them with the results from direct time-evolution simulations. We then show how an electrical current injected in TS wires divides into two parts carried by single electronic excitations and Cooper pairs. We further show ballistic thermal transport in an open TS wire in the topological phase under temperature or voltage bias. The thermal current values grow significantly near the topological phase transition, where thermal conductance displays a sharp quantized peak as predicted earlier. We relate the quantized thermal conductance to the zero-frequency thermoelectric transmission coefficient of the open TS wire. We also observe a large thermoelectric current near the topological transition of the TS wires. We introduce a differential spin conductance which displays a quantized zero-bias peak at zero temperature for a spinful TS wire in the topological phase. The role of superconducting baths in transport is demonstrated by thoroughly examining the features of zero-temperature differential electrical conductance and thermal conductance in open systems with TS baths. Our new thermoelectric and spin transport findings in various two-terminal geometries are beneficial to the present challenges in probing the emergence of Majorana quasi-particles in experiments.

Partition functions of Polychronakos like spin chains associated with polarized spin reversal operators

We construct polarized spin reversal operator (PSRO) which yields a class of representations for the $BC_N$ type of Weyl algebra, and subsequently use this PSRO to find out novel exactly solvable variants of the $BC_N$ type of spin Calogero model. The strong coupling limit of such spin Calogero models generates the $BC_N$ type of Polychronakos spin chains with PSRO. We derive the exact spectra of the $BC_N$ type of spin Calogero models with PSRO and compute the partition functions of the related spin chains by using the freezing trick. We also find out an interesting relation between the partition functions of the $BC_N$ type and $A_{N-1}$ type of Polychronakos spin chains. Finally, we study spectral properties like level density and distribution of spacing between consecutive energy levels for $BC_N$ type of Polychronakos spin chains with PSRO.

Statistics of scattered photons from a driven three-level emitter in a one-dimensional open space

We derive the statistics of scattered photons from a $Λ$- or ladder-type three-level emitter (3LE) embedded in a 1D open waveguide. The weak probe photons in the waveguide are coupled to one of the two allowed transitions of the 3LE, and the other transition is driven by a control beam. This system shows electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) which is accompanied with the Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) at a strong driving by the control beam, and some of these effects have been observed recently. We show that the nature of second-order coherence of the transmitted probe photons near two-photon resonance changes from bunching to antibunching to constant as strength of the control beam is ramped up from zero to a higher value where the ATS appears.

Topologically trivial zero bias conductance peak in semiconductor Majorana wires from boundary effects

We show that a topologically trivial zero bias conductance peak (of height 4e^2/h) is produced in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid nanowires due to a suppressed pair potential and/or an excess Zeeman field at the ends of the heterostructure, both of which can occur in experiments. The zero bias peak (ZBP) (a) appears above a threshold parallel bulk Zeeman field, (b) is stable for a range of bulk field before splitting, (c) disappears with rotation of the bulk Zeeman field, and, (d) is robust to weak disorder fluctuations. The ZBPs from the nanowire ends are also expected to produce splitting oscillations with the applied field similar to those from Majorana fermions. We find that the only unambiguous way to distinguish these trivial ZBPs (of height 4e^2/h) from those arising from Majorana fermions (of height 2e^2/h) is by comparing the (zero temperature) peak height and/or through an interference experiment.

One-Dimensional Vertex Models Associated with a Class of Yangian Invariant Haldane-Shastry Like Spin Chains

We define a class of $Y(sl_{(m|n)})$ Yangian invariant Haldane-Shastry (HS) like spin chains, by assuming that their partition functions can be written in a particular form in terms of the super Schur polynomials. Using some properties of the super Schur polynomials, we show that the partition functions of this class of spin chains are equivalent to the partition functions of a class of one-dimensional vertex models with appropriately defined energy functions. We also establish a boson-fermion duality relation for the partition functions of this class of supersymmetric HS like spin chains by using their correspondence with one-dimensional vertex models.

Spectral properties of supersymmetric Polychronakos spin chain associated with A_{N-1} root system

By using the exact partition function of su(m|n) Polychronakos spin chain associated with A_{N-1} root system, we study some statistical properties of the related spectrum. It is found that the corresponding energy level density satisfies the Gaussian distribution and the cumulative distribution of spacing between consecutive energy levels obeys a certain `square root of a logarithm' law.

Boson-fermion duality in SU(m|n) supersymmetric Haldane-Shastry spin chain

By using the Y(gl(m|n)) super Yangian symmetry of the SU(m|n) supersymmetric Haldane-Shastry spin chain, we show that the partition function of this model satisfies a duality relation under the exchange of bosonic and fermionic spin degrees of freedom. As a byproduct of this study of the duality relation, we find a novel combinatorial formula for the super Schur polynomials associated with some irreducible representations of the Y(gl(m|n)) Yangian algebra. Finally, we reveal an intimate connection between the global SU(m|n) symmetry of a spin chain and the boson-fermion duality relation.
