The fractional porous medium equation on manifolds with conical singularities I

This is the first of a series of two papers which studies the fractional porous medium equation on a Riemannian manifold with isolated conical singularities. In this article, we show $R$-sectoriality for the fractional powers of possibly non-invertible $R$-sectorial operators. Applications concern existence, uniqueness and maximal $L^{q}$-regularity results for solutions of the fractional porous medium equation on manifolds with conical singularities. Space asymptotic behavior of the solutions close to the singularities is provided and its relation to the local geometry is established. Our method extends the freezing-of-coefficients method to the case of non-local operators that are expressed as linear combinations of terms in the form of a product of a function and a fractional power of a local operator.

Conic manifolds under the Yamabe flow

We consider the unnormalized Yamabe flow on manifolds with conical singularities. Under certain geometric assumption on the initial cross-section we show well posedness of the short time solution in the $L^q$-setting. Moreover, we give a picture of the deformation of the conical tips under the flow by providing an asymptotic expansion of the evolving metric close to the boundary in terms of the initial local geometry. Due to the blow up of the scalar curvature close to the singularities we use maximal $L^q$-regularity theory for conically degenerate operators.

Bounded imaginary powers of cone differential operators on higher order Mellin-Sobolev spaces and applications to the Cahn-Hilliard equation

Extending earlier results on the existence of bounded imaginary powers for cone differential operators on weighted $L^p$-spaces $\mathcal{H}^{0,γ}_p(\mathbb{B})$ over a manifold with conical singularities, we show how the same assumptions also yield the existence of bounded imaginary powers on higher order Mellin-Sobolev spaces $\mathcal{H}^{s,γ}_p(\mathbb{B})$, $s\geq0$. As an application we then consider the Cahn-Hilliard equation on a manifold with (possibly warped) conical singularities. Relying on our work for the case of straight cones, we first establish $R$-sectoriality (and thus maximal regularity) for the linearized equation and then deduce the existence of a short time solution with the help of a theorem by Clément and Li. We also obtain the short time asymptotics of the solution near the conical point.

Preserving closedness of operators under summation

We give a sufficient condition for the sum of two closed operators to be closed. In particular, we study the sum of two sectorial operators with the sum of their sectoriality angles greater than $π$. We show that if one of the operators admits bounded $H^{\infty}$-calculus and the resolvent of the other operator satisfies a boundedness condition stronger than the standard sectoriality, but weaker than the bounded imaginary powers property in the case of UMD spaces, then the sum is closed. We apply the result to the abstract parabolic problem and give a sufficient condition for $L^{p}$-maximal regularity.
