Scarf's theorems, simplices, and oriented matroids

In 1967 Herbert Scarf suggested a new proof of Brouwer fixed point theorem based on a surprising analogue of Sperner's lemma. This analogue was motivated by Scarf's work in game theory and mathematical economics. Moreover, Scarf proved a much general version of Sperner's lemma dealing with colorings by vectors. The present paper begins by revisiting Scarf's ideas from the point of view of the basic theory of simplicial cochains in the spirit of author's papers arXiv:1909.00940 and arXiv:2012.13104. After this we get to the main new results of the paper, namely, to a generalization of Scarf results to colorings with colors belonging to an oriented matroid. No knowledge of the theory of oriented matroids is assumed. In the last section we return to the original Scarf theorem and reprove it using even more classical methods of the combinatorial topology of Euclidean spaces. Also, we generalize a theorem of Kannai.

Spectral sections: two proofs of a theorem of Melrose-Piazza

Spectral sections of families of self-adjoint Fredholm operators were introduced by Melrose and Piazza for the needs of index theory. The basic result about spectral sections is a theorem of Melrose and Piazza to the effect that a family admits a spectral section if and only if its analytic index vanishes. The present paper is devoted to two proofs of this theorem. These proofs allow to generalize this theorem and to clarify some subtle aspects related to the definition of the analytic index and trivializations of Hilbert bundles. It is based on ideas of author's paper arXiv:2111.15081, but is largely independent from it.

Affine planes, ternary rings, and examples of non-Desarguesian planes

The paper is devoted to a detailed self-contained exposition of a part of the theory of affine planes leading to a construction of affine (or, equivalently, projective) planes not satisfying the Desarques axiom. It is intended to complement the introductory expositions of the theory of affine and projective planes. A novelty of our exposition is a new notation for the ternary operation in a ternary ring, much more suggestive than the standard one.

Algebra of linear recurrence relations in arbitrary characteristic

The goal of this paper is to present an algebraic approach to the basic results of the theory of linear recurrence relations. This approach is based on the ideas from the theory of representations of one endomorphisms (a special case of which is well known as the theory of the Jordan normal form of matrices). The notion of the divided derivatives, an analogue of the divided powers, turned out to be crucial for proving the results in a natural way and in their natural generality. The final form of our methods was influenced by the the umbral calculus of G.-C. Rota.

Elements of Torelli topology: I. The rank of abelian subgroups

By Torelli topology the author understands aspects of the topology of surfaces (potentially) relevant to the study of Torelli groups. The present paper is devoted to a new approach to the results of W. Vautaw about Dehn multi-twists in Torelli groups and abelian subgroups of Torelli groups. The new proofs are more transparent and lead to stronger estimates of the rank of an abelian subgroup when some additional information is available. An unexpected application of our methods is a new proof of the algebraic characterization of the Dehn twist about separating circles and the Dehn-Johnson twists about bounding pairs of circles. This proof is much shorter than the original one and bypasses one of the main difficulties, which may be called the extension problem, specific to Torelli groups as opposed to the Teichmüller modular groups. The extension problem is discussed in details in the second paper of this series.

The Tutte expansion revisited

The Tutte polynomial of a connected graph was originally defined by Tutte as a sum over all spanning trees of monomials depending on a fixed linear order on the set of edges. Tuttle proved that while these monomials do depend on the linear order, the sum does not. The present paper is a result of a reflection upon this classical theorem of Tutte. It is devoted to an elementary and detailed proof of this theorem in its natural generality, i.e. not for graphs, but for matroids. In contrast with usual methods, the emphasis is on the properties of maps (as opposed to elements) naturally associated to a matroid (or a graph) and an order. In order to fully explain the four-fold symmetry of the proof, we introduce notion of linking between two matroids on the same set. While every matroid is, in fact, linked only to itself and to its dual matroid, the notion of a linking identifies the essential features of the theory and allows to replace the usual four similar arguments by a single one. This is done in Theorem 9.1, which is the focal point of the present paper. With the exception of Introduction, the present paper is self-contained modulo basic concepts related to sets and maps. In particular, no knowledge of the matroid theory or of the graph theory is assumed.

Torelli buildings and their automorphisms

In this paper we introduce, for each closed orientable surface, an analogue of Tits buildings adjusted to investigation of the Torelli group of this surface. It is a simplicial complex with some additional structure. We call this complex with its additional structure the Torelli building of the surface in question. The main result of this paper shows that Torelli buildings of surfaces of genus at least 5 have only obvious automorphisms, and identifies its group of automorphisms. Namely, we prove that for such a surface every automorphism of its Torelli building is induced by a diffeomorphism of the surface. This theorem about automorphisms of Torelli buildings is intended for applications to automorphisms and virtual automorphisms of Torelli groups. The latter results will be presented on some other occasion. All these results were announced in arXiv:math/0311123.
