Chiral standing spin waves in skyrmion lattice

This work studies the resonance excitations of the three-dimensional skyrmions lattice in the finite thickness plate of an isotropic chiral magnet using spin dynamics simulations. We found that the absorption spectra and resonance modes differ from those predicted by the two-dimensional model and the model of the unconfined bulk crystal. The features observed on the spectra can be explained by the formation of chiral standing spin waves, which, contrary to conventional standing spin waves, are characterized by the helical profile of dynamic magnetization of fixed chirality defined by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In this case, the dynamic susceptibility becomes a function of the plate thickness, which gives rise to an interesting effect that manifests itself in periodical fading of the intensity of corresponding modes and makes excitation of these modes impossible at specific thicknesses.

Control and tunability of magnetic bubble states in multilayers with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy at ambient conditions

The reversal of magnetic bubble helicity through topologically trivial transient states provides an additional degree of freedom that promises the development of multidimensional magnetic memories. A key requirement for this concept is the stabilization of bubble states at ambient conditions on application-compatible substrates. In the present work we demonstrate a stabilization routine for remanent bubble states in high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy [(Co(0.44\,nm)/Pt(0.7\,nm)]$_X$, X = 48, 100, 150 multilayers on Si/SiO$_2$ substrates by exploring the effect of external magnetic fields ($H_\mathrm{m}$) of different strength and angles ($θ$) with respect to the film surface normal. By systematic variation of these two parameters, we demonstrate that remanent bubble density and mean bubble diameter can be carefully tuned and optimized for each sample. Our protocol based on magnetometry only reveals the densest remanent bubble states at $H_\mathrm{m} = 0.87 H_\mathrm{s}$ ($H_\mathrm{s}$ is the magnetic saturation field) and $θ=60^\circ - 75^\circ$ for all $X$ with a maximum of 3736 domains/100 $μ$m$^2$ for the X = 48 sample. The experimental observations are supported by micromagnetic simulations taking into account the nanoscale lateral grain structure of multilayers synthesized by magnetron sputter deposition, and thus helping understand the different density of the bubble states found in these systems.

Diversity of states in a chiral magnet nanocylinder

The diversity of three-dimensional magnetic states in a FeGe nanocylinder is studied using micromagnetic simulations and off-axis electron holography in the transmission electron microscope. In particular, we report the observation of a dipole string -- a spin texture composed of two coupled Bloch points -- which becomes stable under geometrical confinement. Quantitative agreement is obtained between experimental and theoretical phase shift images by taking into account the presence of a damaged layer on the surface of the nanocylinder. The theoretical model is based on the assumption that the damaged surface layer, which results from focused ion beam milling during sample preparation, has similar magnetic properties to those of an amorphous FeGe alloy. The results highlight the importance of considering the magnetic properties of the surface layers of such nanoscale samples, which influence their magnetic states.

Homotopy transitions and 3D magnetic solitons

This work provides a concept for three-dimensional magnetic solitons based on mapping the homotopy path between various two-dimensional solutions onto the third spatial axis. The representative examples of statically stable configurations of that type in the model of an isotropic chiral magnet are provided. Various static and dynamic properties of such three-dimensional magnetic solitons are discussed in detail.

Magnetic particle-antiparticle creation and annihilation

A fundamental property of particles and antiparticles, such as electrons and positrons, is their ability to annihilate one another. Similar behavior is predicted for magnetic solitons -- localized spin textures that can be distinguished by their topological index $Q$. Theoretically, magnetic topological solitons with opposite values of $Q$, such as skyrmions and their antiparticles -- antiskyrmions -- are expected to be able to merge continuously and to annihilate. However, experimental verification of such particle-antiparticle pair production and annihilation processes has been lacking. Here, we report the creation and annihilation of skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs in an exceptionally thin film of the cubic chiral magnet B20-type FeGe observed using transmission electron microscopy. Our observations are highly reproducible and are fully consistent with micromagnetic simulations. Our findings provide a new platform for fundamental studies of particles and antiparticles based on magnetic solids and open new perspectives for practical applications of thin films of isotropic chiral magnets.

Thermal generation of droplet soliton in chiral magnet

Controlled creation of localized magnetic textures beyond conventional $π$-skyrmions is an important problem in the field of magnetism. Here by means of spin dynamics simulations, Monte Carlo simulations and harmonic transition state theory we demonstrate that an elementary chiral magnetic soliton with zero topological charge -- the chiral droplet -- can be reliably created by thermal fluctuations in the presence of the tilted magnetic field. The proposed protocol relies on an unusual kinetics combining the effects of the entropic stabilization and low energy barrier for the nucleation of a topologically-trivial state. Following this protocol by varying temperature and the tilt of the external magnetic field one can selectively generate chiral droplets or $π$-skyrmions in a single system. The coexistence of two distinct magnetic solitons establishes a basis for a rich magnetization dynamics and opens up the possibility for the construction of more complex magnetic textures such as skyrmion bags and skyrmions with chiral kinks.

Turning chiral skyrmion inside out

The stability of two-dimensional chiral skyrmions in a tilted magnetic field is studied. It is shown that by changing the direction of the field and its magnitude, one can continuously transform chiral skyrmion into a skyrmion with opposite polarity and vorticity. This turned inside out skyrmion can be considered as an antiparticle for ordinary axisymmetric skyrmion. For any tilt angle of the magnetic field, there is a range of its absolute values where two types of skyrmions may coexist. In a tilted field, the potentials for inter-skyrmion interactions are characterized by the presence of local minima suggesting attractive interaction between the particles. The potentials of inter-particle interactions also have so-called fusion channels allowing either annihilation of two particles or the emergence of a new particle. The presented results are general for a wide class of magnetic crystals with both easy-plane and easy-axis anisotropy.

Interlayer exchange coupling -- a general scheme turning chiral magnets into magnetic multilayers carrying atomic-scale skyrmions

We report on a general principle using the interlayer exchange coupling to extend the regime of chiral magnetic films in which stable or metastable magnetic skyrmions can appear at zero magnetic field. We verify this concept on the basis of a first-principles model for a Mn monolayer on W(001) substrate, a prototype chiral magnet for which the atomic-scale magnetic texture is determined by the frustration of exchange interactions, impossible to unwind by laboratory magnetic fields. By means of \textit{ab initio} calculations for the Mn/W$_m$/Co$_n$/Pt/W(001) multilayer system we show that for certain thicknesses $m$ of the W spacer and $n$ of the Co reference layer, the effective field of the reference layer fully substitutes the required magnetic field for skyrmion formation.

Switching of chiral magnetic skyrmions by picosecond magnetic field pulses via transient topological states

Magnetic chiral skyrmions are vortex like spin structures that appear as stable or meta-stable states in magnetic materials due to the interplay between the symmetric and antisymmetric exchange interactions, applied magnetic field and/or uniaxial anisotropy. Their small size and internal stability make them prospective objects for data storage but for this, the controlled switching between skyrmion states of opposite polarity and topological charge is essential. Here we present a study of magnetic skyrmion switching by an applied magnetic field pulse based on a discrete model of classical spins and atomistic spin dynamics. We found a finite range of coupling parameters corresponding to the coexistence of two degenerate isolated skyrmions characterized by mutually inverted spin structures with opposite polarity and topological charge. We demonstrate how for a wide range of material parameters a short inclined magnetic field pulse can initiate the reliable switching between these states at GHz rates. Detailed analysis of the switching mechanism revealed the complex path of the system accompanied with the excitation of a chiral-achiral meron pair and the formation of an achiral skyrmion.
