Conformally maximal metrics for Laplace eigenvalues on surfaces

The paper is concerned with the maximization of Laplace eigenvalues on surfaces of given volume with a Riemannian metric in a fixed conformal class. A significant progress on this problem has been recently achieved by Nadirashvili-Sire and Petrides using related, though different methods. In particular, it was shown that for a given $k$, the maximum of the $k$-th Laplace eigenvalue in a conformal class on a surface is either attained on a metric which is smooth except possibly at a finite number of conical singularities, or it is attained in the limit while a "bubble tree" is formed on a surface. Geometrically, the bubble tree appearing in this setting can be viewed as a union of touching identical round spheres. We present another proof of this statement, developing the approach proposed by the second author and Y. Sire. As a side result, we provide explicit upper bounds on the topological spectrum of surfaces.

Shear flows of an ideal fluid and elliptic equations in unbounded domains

We prove that, in a two-dimensional strip, a steady flow of an ideal incompressible fluid with no stationary point and tangential boundary conditions is a shear flow. The same conclusion holds for a bounded steady flow in a half-plane. The proofs are based on the study of the geometric properties of the streamlines of the flow and on one-dimensional symmetry results for solutions of some semilinear elliptic equations. Some related rigidity results of independent interest are also shown in n-dimensional slabs in any dimension n.

Conformal Spectrum and Harmonic maps

This paper is devoted to the study of the conformal spectrum (and more precisely the first eigenvalue) of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a smooth connected compact Riemannian surface without boundary, endowed with a conformal class. We give a constructive proof of a critical metric which is smooth except at some conical singularities and maximizes the first eigenvalue in the conformal class of the background metric. We also prove that the map associating a finite number of eigenvectors of the maximizing $λ_1$ into the sphere is harmonic, establishing a link between conformal spectrum and harmonic maps.

Analyticity of solutions for quasilinear wave equations and other quasilinear systems

We prove the persistence of analyticity for classical solution of the Cauchy problem for quasilinear wave equations with analytic data. Our results show that the analyticity of solutions, stated by the Cauchy-Kowalewski and Ovsiannikov-Nirenberg theorems, lasts till a classical solution exists. Moreover, they show that if the equation and the Cauchy data are analytic only in a part of space-variables, then a classical solution also is analytic in these variables. The approach applies to other quasilinear equations and implies the persistence of the space-analyticity (and the partial space-analyticity) of their classical solutions.

Convexity of level sets for elliptic problems in convex domains or convex rings: two counterexamples

This paper deals with some geometrical properties of solutions of some semilinear elliptic equations in bounded convex domains or convex rings. Constant boundary conditions are imposed on the single component of the boundary when the domain is convex, or on each of the two components of the boundary when the domain is a convex ring. A function is called quasiconcave if its superlevel sets, defined in a suitable way when the domain is a convex ring, are all convex. In this paper, we prove that the superlevel sets of the solutions do not always inherit the convexity or ring-convexity of the domain. Namely, we give two counterexamples to this quasiconcavity property: the first one for some two-dimensional convex domains and the second one for some convex rings in any dimension.

Singular Solutions of Hessian Fully Nonlinear Elliptic Equations

We study Hessian fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations and show that the second derivatives of viscosity solutions of those equations (in 12 or more dimensions) can blow up in an interior point of the domain. We prove that the optimal interior regularity of such solutions is no more than C^{1+ε}, showing the optimality of the known interior regularity result. The same is proven for Isaacs equations. We prove the existence of non-smooth solutions to fully nonlinear Hessian uniformly elliptic equations in 11 dimensions. We study also the possible singularity of solutions of Hessian equations defined in a neighborhood of a point and prove that a homogeneous order 0<α<1 solution of a Hessian uniformly elliptic equation in a punctured ball should be radial.

Maximization of the second positive Neumann eigenvalue for planar domains

We prove that the second positive Neumann eigenvalue of a bounded simply-connected planar domain of a given area does not exceed the first positive Neumann eigenvalue on a disk of a twice smaller area. This estimate is sharp and attained by a sequence of domains degenerating to a union of two identical disks. In particular, this result implies the Polya conjecture for the second Neumann eigenvalue. The proof is based on a combination of analytic and topological arguments. As a by-product of our method we obtain an upper bound on the second eigenvalue for conformally round metrics on odd-dimensional spheres.
