Asymptotics for optimal controls for horizontal mean curvature flow

The solutions to surface evolution problems like mean curvature flow can be expressed as value functions of suitable stochastic control problems, obtained as limit of a family of regularised control problems. The control-theoretical approach is particularly suited for such problems for degenerate geometries like the Heisenberg group. In this situation a new type of singularities absent for the Euclidean mean curvature flow occurs, the so-called characteristic points. This paper investigates the asymptotic behaviour of the regularised optimal controls in the vicinity of such characteristic points.

Scaling limits and stochastic homogenization for some nonlinear parabolic equations

The aim of this paper is twofold. The first is to study the asymptotics of a parabolically scaled, continuous and space-time stationary in time version of the well-known Funaki-Spohn model in Statistical Physics. After a change of unknowns requiring the existence of a space-time stationary eternal solution of a stochastically perturbed heat equation, the problem transforms to the qualitative homogenization of a uniformly elliptic, space-time stationary, divergence form, nonlinear partial differential equation, the study of which is the second aim of the paper. An important step is the construction of correctors with the appropriate behavior at infinity.

Entropic and gradient flow formulations for nonlinear diffusion

Nonlinear diffusion $\partial_t ρ= Δ(Φ(ρ))$ is considered for a class of nonlinearities $Φ$. It is shown that for suitable choices of $Φ$, an associated Lyapunov functional can be interpreted as thermodynamics entropy. This information is used to derive an associated metric, here called thermodynamic metric. The analysis is confined to nonlinear diffusion obtainable as hydrodynamic limit of a zero range process. The thermodynamic setting is linked to a large deviation principle for the underlying zero range process and the corresponding equation of fluctuating hydrodynamics. For the latter connections, the thermodynamic metric plays a central role.

Homogenization of a semilinear heat equation

We consider the homogenization of a semilinear heat equation with vanishing viscosity and with oscillating positive potential depending on $u/\varepsilon$. According to the rate between the frequency of oscillations in the potential and the vanishing factor in the viscosity, we obtain different regimes in the limit evolution and we discuss the locally uniform convergence of the solutions to the effective problem. The interesting feature of the model is that in the strong diffusion regime the effective operator is discontinuous in the gradient entry. We get a complete characterization of the limit solution in dimension $n=1$, whereas in dimension $n>1$ we discuss the main properties of the solutions to the effective problem selected at the limit and we prove uniqueness for some classes of initial data.

Large deviations and gradient flows

In recent work [1] we uncovered intriguing connections between Otto's characterisation of diffusion as entropic gradient flow [16] on one hand and large-deviation principles describing the microscopic picture (Brownian motion) on the other. In this paper, we sketch this connection, show how it generalises to a wider class of systems, and comment on consequences and implications. Specifically, we connect macroscopic gradient flows with large deviation principles, and point out the potential of a bigger picture emerging: we indicate that in some non- equilibrium situations, entropies and thermodynamic free energies can be derived via large deviation principles. The approach advocated here is different from the established hydrodynamic limit passage but extends a link that is well known in the equilibrium situation.

Non-Existence of Positive Stationary Solutions for a Class of Semi-Linear PDEs with Random Coefficients

We consider a so-called random obstacle model for the motion of a hypersurface through a field of random obstacles, driven by a constant driving field. The resulting semi-linear parabolic PDE with random coefficients does not admit a global nonnegative stationary solution, which implies that an interface that was flat originally cannot get stationary. The absence of global stationary solutions is shown by proving lower bounds on the growth of stationary solutions on large domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Difficulties arise because the random lower order part of the equation cannot be bounded uniformly.

From a large-deviations principle to the Wasserstein gradient flow: a new micro-macro passage

We study the connection between a system of many independent Brownian particles on one hand and the deterministic diffusion equation on the other. For a fixed time step $h>0$, a large-deviations rate functional $J_h$ characterizes the behaviour of the particle system at $t=h$ in terms of the initial distribution at $t=0$. For the diffusion equation, a single step in the time-discretized entropy-Wasserstein gradient flow is characterized by the minimization of a functional $K_h$. We establish a new connection between these systems by proving that $J_h$ and $K_h$ are equal up to second order in $h$ as $h\to0$. This result gives a microscopic explanation of the origin of the entropy-Wasserstein gradient flow formulation of the diffusion equation. Simultaneously, the limit passage presented here gives a physically natural description of the underlying particle system by describing it as an entropic gradient flow.

Pinning of interfaces in random media

For a model for the propagation of a curvature sensitive interface in a time independent random medium, as well as for a linearized version which is commonly referred to as Quenched Edwards-Wilkinson equation, we prove existence of a stationary positive supersolution at non-vanishing applied load. This leads to the emergence of a hysteresis that does not vanish for slow loading, even though the local evolution law is viscous (in particular, the velocity of the interface in the model is linear in the driving force).

Unique minimizer for a Random functional with double-well potential in dimension 1 and 2

We add a random bulk term, modelling the interaction with the impurities of the medium, to a standard functional in the gradient theory of phase transitions consisting of a gradient term with a double well potential. We show that in $d\le2$ there exists, for almost all the realizations of the random bulk term, a unique random macroscopic minimizer. This result is in sharp contrast to the case when the random bulk term is absent. In the latter case there are two minimizers which are (in law) invariant under translations in space.
