The theory of symmetric tensor field: from fractons to gravitons and back

We consider the theory of a symmetric tensor field in 4D, invariant under a subclass of infinitesimal diffeomorphism transformations, where the vector diff parameter is the 4-divergence of a scalar parameter. The resulting gauge symmetry characterizes the "fracton" quasiparticles and identifies a theory which depends on a dimensionless parameter, which cannot be reabsorbed by a redefinition of the tensor field, despite the fact that the theory is free of interactions. This kind of "electromagnetic gauge symmetry" is weaker that the original diffeomorphism invariance, in the sense that the most general action contains, but is not limited to, linearized gravity, and we show how it is possible to switch continuously from linearized gravity to a mixed phase where both gravitons and fractons are present, without changing the degrees of freedom of the theory. The gauge fixing procedure is particularly rich and rather peculiar, and leads to the computation of propagators which in the massive case we ask to be tachyonic-free, thus constraining the domain of the parameter of the theory. Finally, a closer contact to fractons is made by the introduction of a parameter related to the "rate of propagation". For a particular value of this parameter the theory does not propagate at all, and we guess that, for this reason, the resulting theory should be tightly related to the fracton excitations.

Topological BF description of 2D accelerated chiral edge modes

We consider the topological abelian BF theory with radial boundary on a generic 3D manifold. Our aim is to study if, where and how the boundary keeps memory of the details of the background metric. We find that some features are topologically protected and do not depend on the bulk metric. The 2D action holographically induced on the boundary depends on two scalar fields, and can be decoupled in two Luttinger actions describing two chiral bosons moving on the edge of the 3D bulk. The outcome is that these edge excitations are accelerated, as a direct consequence of the non-flat nature of the bulk spacetime. The chiral velocities of the edge modes, indeed, acquire a local dependence through the determinant of the induced metric on the boundary. We find three possibilities for the motion of the edge quasiparticles: same directions, opposite directions and a single-moving mode. But, requiring that the Hamiltonian of the 2D theory is bounded by below, the case of edge modes moving in the same direction is ruled out: systems involving parallel Hall currents (for instance Fractional Quantum Hall Effect with $ν=2/5$) cannot be described by a BF theory with boundary, independently from the geometry of the bulk spacetime, because of positive energy considerations. We are therefore left with physical situations characterized by edge excitations moving with opposite velocities (examples are FQHE with $ν=1-1/n$, with $n$ positive integer, and Helical Luttinger Liquids phenomena) or a single-moving mode (Quantum Anomalous Hall). A strong restriction is obtained by requiring Time Reversal symmetry, which uniquely identifies modes with equal and opposite velocities, and we know that this is the case of Topological Insulators. The novelty, with respect to the flat bulk background, is that the modes have local velocities, which corresponds to Topological Insulators with accelerated edge modes.

Fierz-Pauli theory reloaded: from a theory of a symmetric tensor field to linearized massive gravity

Modifying gravity at large distances by means of a massive graviton may explain the observed acceleration of the Universe without Dark Energy. The standard paradigm for Massive Gravity is the Fierz-Pauli theory, which, nonetheless, displays well known flaws in its massless limit. The most serious one is represented by the vDVZ discontinuity, which consists in a disagreement between the massless limit of the Fierz-Pauli theory and General Relativity. Our approach is based on a field theoretical treatment of Massive Gravity: General Relativity, in the weak field approximation, is treated as a gauge theory of a symmetric rank-2 tensor field. This leads us to propose an alternative theory of linearized Massive Gravity, describing five degrees of freedom of the graviton, with a good massless limit, without vDVZ discontinuity, and depending on one mass parameter only, in agreement with the Fierz-Pauli theory.

A note on Harmonic Gauge(s) in Massive Gravity

We consider the harmonic gauge condition in linearized gravity, seen as a gauge theory for a symmetric tensor field. Once the harmonic gauge condition is implemented, as customary, according to the Faddeev-Popov procedure, the gauge fixed action still depends on one gauge parameter. Consequently, the harmonic gauge appears to be a class of conditions, rather than a particular one. This allows to give a physical motivation for the covariant harmonic gauge(s), which emerges when the gravitational perturbation is given a mass term. In fact, for a particular choice of harmonic gauge, we find a theory of linearized massive gravity displaying five degrees of freedom, as it should, and which is not affected by the vDVZ discontinuity, differently from what happens in the standard Fierz-Pauli theory.

Holographic Projection of Electromagnetic Maxwell Theory

The 4D Maxwell theory with single-sided planar boundary is considered. As a consequence of the presence of the boundary, two broken Ward identities are recovered, which, on-shell, give rise to two conserved currents living on the edge. A Kaç-Moody algebra formed by a subset of the bulk fields is obtained with central charge proportional to the inverse of the Maxwell coupling constant, and the degrees of freedom of the boundary theory are identified as two vector fields, also suggesting that the 3D theory should be a gauge theory. Finally the holographic contact between bulk and boundary theory is reached in two inequivalent ways, both leading to a unique 3D action describing a new gauge theory of two coupled vector fields with a topological Chern-Simons term with massive coefficient. In order to check that the 3D projection of 4D Maxwell theory is well defined, we computed the energy-momentum tensor and the propagators. The role of discrete symmetries is briefly discussed.

Analytic DC thermo-electric conductivities in holography with massive gravitons

We provide an analytical derivation of the thermo-electric transport coefficients of the simplest momentum-dissipating model in gauge/gravity where the lack of momentum conservation is realized by means of explicit graviton mass in the bulk. We rely on the procedure recently described by Donos and Gauntlett in the context of Q-lattices and holographic models where momentum dissipation is realized through non-trivial scalars. The analytical approach confirms the results found previously by means of numerical computations.

Coexistence of two vector order parameters: a holographic model for ferromagnetic superconductivity

We study a generalization of the standard holographic p-wave superconductor featuring two interacting vector order parameters. Basing our argument on the symmetry and linear response properties of the model, we propose it as a holographic effective theory describing a strongly coupled ferromagnetic superconductor. We show that the two order parameters undergo concomitant condensations as a manifestation of an intrinsically interlaced electric/magnetic dynamics. Such intertwined dynamics is confirmed by the study of the transport properties. We characterize thoroughly the equilibrium and the linear response (i.e. optical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility) of the model at hand by means of a probe approximation analysis. Some insight about the effects of backreaction in the normal phase can be gained by analogy with the s-wave unbalanced holographic superconductor.

Holography in flat spacetime: 4D theories and electromagnetic duality on the border

We consider a free topological model in 5D euclidean flat spacetime, built from two rank-2 tensor fields. Despite the fact that the bulk of the model does not have any particular physical interpretation, on its 4D planar edge nontrivial gauge field theories are recovered, whose features are entirely determined by the gauge and discrete symmetries of the bulk. In particular no 4D dynamics can be obtained without imposing a Time Reversal invariance in the bulk. Remarkably, one of the two possible edge models selected by the Time Reversal symmetries displays a true electromagnetic duality, which relates strong and weak coupling regimes. Moreover this same model, when considered on-shell, coincides with the Maxwell theory, which therefore can be thought of as a 4D boundary theory of a seemingly harmless 5D topological model.

On the introduction of a boundary in topological field theories

We study the consequences of the presence of a boundary in topological field theories in various dimensions. We characterize, univocally and on very general grounds, the field content and the symmetries of the actions which live on the boundary. We then show that these actions are covariant, despite appearances. We show also that physically relevant theories like the 2D Luttinger liquid model, or the 4D Maxwell theory, can be seen as boundary reductions of higher dimensional topological field theories, which do not display local observables.

Thermo-electric transport in gauge/gravity models with momentum dissipation

We present a systematic definition and analysis of the thermo-electric linear response in gauge/gravity systems focusing especially on models with massive gravity in the bulk and therefore momentum dissipation in the dual field theory. A precise treatment of finite counter-terms proves to be essential to yield a consistent physical picture whose hydrodynamic and beyond-hydrodynamics behaviors noticeably match with field theoretical expectations. The model furnishes a possible gauge/gravity description of the crossover from the quantum-critical to the disorder-dominated Fermi-liquid behaviors, as expected in graphene.

3+1D Massless Weyl spinors from bosonic scalar-tensor duality

We consider the fermionization of a bosonic free theory characterized by the 3+1D scalar - tensor duality. This duality can be interpreted as the dimensional reduction, via a planar boundary, of the 4+1D topological BF theory. In this model, adopting the Sommerfield tomographic representation of quantized bosonic fields, we explicitly build a fermionic operator and its associated Klein factor such that it satisfies the correct anticommutation relations. Interestingly, we demonstrate that this operator satisfies the massless Dirac equation and that it can be identified with a 3+1D Weyl spinor. Finally, as an explicit example, we write the integrated charge density in terms of the tomographic transformed bosonic degrees of freedom.

Duality and Dimensional Reduction of 5D BF Theory

A planar boundary introduced à la Symanzik in the 5D topological BF theory, with the only requirement of locality and power counting, allows to uniquely determine a gauge invariant, non topological 4D Lagrangian. The boundary condition on the bulk fields is interpreted as a duality relation for the boundary fields, in analogy with the fermionization duality which holds in the 3D case. This suggests that the 4D degrees of freedom might be fermionic, although starting from a bosonic bulk theory. The method we propose to dimensionally reduce a Quantum Field Theory and to identify the resulting degrees of freedom can be applied to a generic spacetime dimension.

3D Dynamics of 4D Topological BF Theory With Boundary

We consider the four dimensional abelian topological BF theory with a planar boundary introduced following the Symanzik's method. We find the most general boundary conditions compatible with the fields equations broken by the boundary. The residual gauge invariance is described by means of two Ward identities which generate an algebra of conserved currents. We interpret this algebra as canonical commutation relations of fields, which we use to construct a three dimensional Lagrangian. As a remarkable by-product, the (unique) boundary condition which we found, can be read as a duality relation between 3D dynamical variables.

Let's Twist Again: N=2 Super Yang Mills Theory Coupled To Matter

We give the twisted version of N=2 Super Yang Mills theory coupled to matter, including quantum fields, supersymmetry transformations, action and algebraic structure. We show that the whole action, coupled to matter, can be written as the variation of a nilpotent operator, modulo field equations. An extended Slavnov-Taylor identity, collecting gauge symmetry and supersymmetry, is written, which allows to define the web of algebraic constraints, in view of the algebraic renormalization and of the extension of the non-renormalization theorems holding for N=2 SYM theory without matter.

Repairing Broken Algebras

We consider theories characterized by a set of Ward operators which do not form a closed algebra. We impose the Slavnov--Taylor identity built out of the Ward operators and we derive the acceptable breaking of the algebra and the general form of the classical action. The 1PI generating functional is expressed in terms of the known quantities characterizing the theory and of a nontrivial integrability condition. As a nontrivial application of our formalism, we discuss the N=4 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model.

Algebraic Renormalization of $N=1$ Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

The complete renormalization procedure of a general N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory in the Wess-Zumino gauge is presented, using the regulator free ``algebraic renormalization'' procedure. Both gauge invariance and supersymmetry are included into one single BRS invariance. The form of the general nonabelian anomaly is given. Furthermore, it is explained how the gauge BRS and the supersymmetry functional operators can be extracted from the general BRS operator. It is then shown that the supersymmetry operators actually belong to the closed, finite, Wess-Zumino superalgebra when their action is restricted to the space of the ``gauge invariant operators'', i.e. to the cohomology classes of the gauge BRS operator. An erratum is added at the end of the paper.

Algebraic Renormalization of $N=1$ Supersymmetric Gauge Theories with Supersymmetry Breaking Masses

We provide N=1 Super Yang-Mills theory in the Wess-Zumino gauge with mass terms for the supersymmetric partners of the gauge fields and of the matter fields, together with a supersymmetric mass term for the fermionic matter fields. All mass terms are chosen in such a way to induce soft supersymmetry breakings at most, while preserving gauge invariance to all orders of perturbation theory. The breakings are controlled through an extended Slavnov-Taylor identity. The renormalization analysis, both in the ultraviolet and in the infrared region, is performed.

preprint1995arXiv

Algebraic renormalization of N=2 Super Yang-Mills theories coupled to matter

We study the algebraic renormalization of $N=2$ Supersymmetric Yang--Mills theories coupled to matter. A regularization procedure preserving both the BRS invariance and the supersymmetry is not known yet, therefore it is necessary to adopt the algebraic method of renormalization, which does not rely on any regularization scheme. The whole analysis is reduced to the solution of cohomology problems arising from the generalized Slavnov operator which summarizes all the symmetries of the model. Besides to unphysical renormalizations of the quantum fields, we find that the only coupling constant of $N=2$ SYMs can get quantum corrections. Moreover we prove that all the symmetries defining the theory are algebraically anomaly--free.

Off--shell formulation of N = 2 Super Yang--Mills theories coupled to matter without auxiliary fields

N=2 supersymmetric Yang--Mills theories coupled to matter are considered in the Wess--Zumino gauge. The supersymmetries are realized nonlinearly and the anticommutator between two susy charges gives, in addition to translations, gauge transformations and equations of motion. The difficulties hidden in such an algebraic structure are well known: almost always auxiliary fields can be introduced in order to put the formalism off--shell, but still the field dependent gauge transformations give rise to an infinite dimensional algebra quite hard to deal with. However, it is possible to avoid all these problems by collecting into an unique nilpotent operator all the symmetries defining the theory, namely ordinary BRS, supersymmetries and translations. According to this method the role of the auxiliary fields is covered by the external sources coupled, as usual, to the nonlinear variations of the quantum fields. The analysis is then formally reduced to that of ordinary Yang--Mills theory.

Infrared and Ultraviolet Finiteness of Topological BF Theory in Two Dimensions

The two--dimensional topological BF model is considered in the Landau gauge in the framework of perturbation theory. Due to the singular behaviour of the ghost propagator at long distances, a mass term to the ghost fields is introduced as infrared regulator. Relying on the supersymmetric algebraic structure of the resulting massive theory, we study the infrared and ultraviolet renormalizability of the model, with the outcome that it is perturbatively finite.
