N=2 superconformal blocks and instanton partition functions

We consider the problem of computing (irregular) conformal blocks in 2d CFTs whose chiral symmetry algebra is the N=2 superconformal algebra. Our construction uses two ingredients: (i) the relation between the representation theories of the N=2 superconformal algebra and the affine sl(2) algebra, extended to the level of the conformal blocks, and (ii) the relation between affine sl(2) conformal blocks and instanton partition functions in the 4d N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with a surface defect. By combining these two facts we derive combinatorial expressions for the N=2 superconformal blocks in the Gaiotto limit.

Coset conformal blocks and N=2 gauge theories

It was recently suggested that the su(N)_k+su(N)_p/su(N)_{k+p} coset conformal field theories should be related to N=2 SU(N) gauge theories on R^4/Z_p. In this paper we study various aspects of this proposal. We perform explicit checks of the relation for (N,p)=(2,4), where the symmetry algebra of the coset is the so called S_3 parafermion algebra. Even though the symmetry algebra of the coset is unknown for generic (N,p) models, we manage to perform non-trivial checks in the general case by using knowledge of the Kac determinant of the coset CFT. We also find evidence that the conformal blocks of the (N,p) model should factorise into a certain product of p (N,1) conformal blocks. Precisely this structure is present in the instanton partition function on R^4/Z_p.

W-algebras and surface operators in N=2 gauge theories

A general class of W-algebras can be constructed from the affine sl(N) algebra by (quantum) Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction and are classified by partitions of N. Surface operators in an N=2 SU(N) 4d gauge theory are also classified by partitions of N. We argue that instanton partition functions of N=2 gauge theories in the presence of a surface operator can also be computed from the corresponding W-algebra. We test this proposal by analysing the Polyakov-Bershadsky W_3^(2) algebra obtaining results that are in agreement with the known partition functions for SU(3) gauge theories with a so called simple surface operator. As a byproduct, our proposal implies relations between the W_3^(2) and W_3 algebras.

A & B model approaches to surface operators and Toda theories

It has recently been argued by Alday et al that the inclusion of surface operators in 4d N=2 SU(2) quiver gauge theories should correspond to insertions of certain degenerate operators in the dual Liouville theory. So far only the insertion of a single surface operator has been treated (in a semi-classical limit). In this paper we study and generalise this proposal. Our approach relies on the use of topological string theory techniques. On the B-model side we show that the effects of multiple surface operator insertions in 4d N=2 gauge theories can be calculated using the B-model topological recursion method, valid beyond the semi-classical limit. On the mirror A-model side we find by explicit computations that the 5d lift of the SU(N) gauge theory partition function in the presence of (one or many) surface operators is equal to an A-model topological string partition function with the insertion of (one or many) toric branes. This is in agreement with an earlier proposal by Gukov. Our A-model results were motivated by and agree with what one obtains by combining the AGT conjecture with the dual interpretation in terms of degenerate operators. The topological string theory approach also opens up new possibilities in the study of 2d Toda field theories.

An A_r threesome: Matrix models, 2d CFTs and 4d N=2 gauge theories

We explore the connections between three classes of theories: A_r quiver matrix models, d=2 conformal A_r Toda field theories and d=4 N=2 supersymmetric conformal A_r quiver gauge theories. In particular, we analyse the quiver matrix models recently introduced by Dijkgraaf and Vafa and make detailed comparisons with the corresponding quantities in the Toda field theories and the N=2 quiver gauge theories. We also make a speculative proposal for how the matrix models should be modified in order for them to reproduce the instanton partition functions in quiver gauge theories in five dimensions.

Instanton partition functions in N=2 SU(N) gauge theories with a general surface operator, and their W-algebra duals

We write down an explicit conjecture for the instanton partition functions in 4d N=2 SU(N) gauge theories in the presence of a certain type of surface operator. These surface operators are classified by partitions of N, and for each partition there is an associated partition function. For the partition N=N we recover the Nekrasov formalism, and when N=1+...+1 we reproduce the result of Feigin et. al. For the case N=1+(N-1) our expression is consistent with an alternative formulation in terms of a restricted SU(N)xSU(N) instanton partition function. When N=1+...+1+2 the partition functions can also be obtained perturbatively from certain W-algebras known as quasi-superconformal algebras, in agreement with a recent general proposal.

Rigid surface operators and S-duality: some proposals

We study surface operators in the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with gauge groups SO(n) and Sp(2n). As recently shown by Gukov and Witten these theories have a class of rigid surface operators which are expected to be related by S-duality. The rigid surface operators are of two types, unipotent and semisimple. We make explicit proposals for how the S-duality map should act on unipotent surface operators. We also discuss semisimple surface operators and make some proposals for certain subclasses of such operators.

Zero-energy states of N = 4 SYM on T^3: S-duality and the mapping class group

We continue our studies of the low-energy spectrum of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on a spatial three-torus. In two previous papers, we computed the spectrum of normalizable zero-energy states for all choices of gauge group and all values of the electric and magnetic 't Hooft fluxes, and checked its invariance under the SL_2(Z) S-duality group. In this paper, we refine the analysis by also decomposing the space of bound states into irreducible unitary representations of the SL_3(Z) mapping class group of the three-torus. We perform a detailed study of the S-dual pairs of theories with gauge groups Spin(2n+1) and Sp(2n). The predictions of S-duality (which commutes with the mapping class group) are fulfilled as expected, but the proof requires some surprisingly intricate combinatorial infinite product identities.

A note on S-duality for the N=1* Sp(2n) and SO(2n+1) super-Yang-Mills theories

We study the N=1* supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge groups Sp(2n) and SO(2n+1). These theories are obtained from the corresponding N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories via a mass deformation. We show that the number of quantum vacua in the Sp(2n) theory is equal to the number of quantum vacua in the SO(2n+1) theory. This constitutes non-trivial support for S-duality between these theories. The verification of the equality of the number of quantum vacua involves a rather esoteric identity due to Ramanujan.

Low-energy spectrum of N = 4 super-Yang-Mills on T^3: flat connections, bound states at threshold, and S-duality

We study (3+1)-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a spatial three-torus. The low energy spectrum consists of a number of continua of states of arbitrarily low energies. Although the theory has no mass-gap, it appears that the dimensions and discrete abelian magnetic and electric 't Hooft fluxes of the continua are computable in a semi-classical approximation. The wave-functions of the low-energy states are supported on submanifolds of the moduli space of flat connections, at which various subgroups of the gauge group are left unbroken. The field theory degrees of freedom transverse to such a submanifold are approximated by supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics with 16 supercharges, based on the semi-simple part of this unbroken group. Conjectures about the number of normalizable bound states at threshold in the latter theory play a crucial role in our analysis. In this way, we compute the low-energy spectra in the cases where the simply connected cover of the gauge group is given by SU(n), Spin(2n+1) or Sp(2n). We then show that the constraints of S-duality are obeyed for unique values of the number of bound states in the matrix quantum mechanics. In the cases based on Spin(2n+1) and Sp(2n), the proof involves surprisingly subtle combinatorial identities, which hint at a rich underlying structure.

pp-wave limits and orientifolds

We study the pp-wave limits of various elliptic models with orientifold planes and D7-branes, as well as the pp-wave limit of an orientifold of adS_5 x T^{11}. Many of the limits contain both open and closed strings. We also present pp-wave limits of theories which give rise to a compact null direction and contain open strings. Maps between the string theory states and gauge theory operators are proposed.

Towards a manifestly SL(2,Z)-covariant action for the type IIB (p,q) super-five-branes

We determine a manifestly SL(2,Z)-covariant kappa-symmetric action for the type IIB (p,q) five-branes as a perturbative expansion in the world-volume field strengths within the framework where the brane tension is generated by a world-volume field. In this formulation the Lagrangian is expected to be polynomial; we construct the kappa-invariant action to fourth order in the world-volume field strengths.

Special Geometry and Automorphic Forms

We consider special geometry of the vector multiplet moduli space in compactifications of the heterotic string on $K3 \times T^2$ or the type IIA string on $K3$-fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. In particular, we construct a modified dilaton that is invariant under $SO(2, n; Z)$ T-duality transformations at the non-perturbative level and regular everywhere on the moduli space. The invariant dilaton, together with a set of other coordinates that transform covariantly under $SO(2, n; Z)$, parameterize the moduli space. The construction involves a meromorphic automorphic function of $SO(2, n; Z)$, that also depends on the invariant dilaton. In the weak coupling limit, the divisor of this automorphic form is an integer linear combination of the rational quadratic divisors where the gauge symmetry is enhanced classically. We also show how the non-perturbative prepotential can be expressed in terms of meromorphic automorphic forms, by expanding a T-duality invariant quantity both in terms of the standard special coordinates and in terms of the invariant dilaton and the covariant coordinates.

Generalized N=2 Supersymmetric Toda Field Theories

In this paper we introduce a class of generalized supersymmetric Toda field theories. The theories are labeled by a continuous parameter and have $N=2$ supersymmetry. They include previously known $N=2$ Toda theories as special cases. Using the WZNW -->Toda reduction approach we obtain a closed expression for the bracket of the associated ${\cal W}$ algebras. We also derive an expression for the generators of the ${\cal W}$ algebra in a free superfield realization.

Generalized Toda Theories from WZNW Reduction

We reconsider the, by Brink and Vasiliev, recently proposed generalized Toda field theories using the framework of WZNW$\rightarrow$Toda reduction. The reduced theory has a gauge symmetry which can be fixed in various ways. We discuss some different gauge choices. In particular we study the ${\cal W}$ algebra associated with the generalized model in some different realizations, corresponding to different gauge choices. We also investigate the mapping between the Toda field and a free field and show the relation between the ${\cal W}$ algebra generators expressed in terms of the two different fields. All results apply also to the case of ordinary Toda theories.
