Topological Speedups For Minimal Cantor Systems

In this paper we study speedups of dynamical systems in the topological category. Specifically, we characterize when one minimal homeomorphism on a Cantor space is the speedup of another. We go on to provide a characterization for strong speedups, i.e., when the jump function has at most one point of discontinuity. These results provide topological versions of the measure-theoretic results of Arnoux, Ornstein and Weiss, and are closely related to Giordano, Putnam and Skau's characterization of orbit equivalence for minimal Cantor systems.

Powers and alternative laws

A groupoid is alternative if it satisfies the alternative laws $x(xy)=(xx)y$ and $x(yy)=(xy)y$. These laws induce four partial maps on $\mathbb{N}^+\times \mathbb{N}^+$, $(r,\,s)\mapsto (2r,\,s-r)$, $(r-s,\,2s)$, $(r/2,\,s+r/2)$, $(r+s/2,\,s/2)$ that taken together form a dynamical system. We describe the orbits of this dynamical system, which allows us to show that $n$th powers in a free alternative groupoid on one generator are well-defined if and only if $n\le 5$. We then discuss some number theoretical properties of the orbits, and the existence of alternative loops without two-sided inverses.

Self-Induced Systems

A minimal Cantor system is said to be self-induced whenever it is conjugate to one of its induced systems. Substitution subshifts and some odometers are classical examples, and we show that these are the only examples in the equicontinuous or expansive case. Nevertheless, we exhibit a zero entropy self-induced system that is neither equicontinuous nor expansive. We also provide non-uniquely ergodic self-induced systems with infinite entropy. Moreover, we give a characterization of self-induced minimal Cantor systems in terms of substitutions on finite or infinite alphabets.

C*-Algebraic Characterization of Bounded Orbit Injection Equivalence for Minimal Free Cantor Systems

Bounded orbit injection equivalence is an equivalence relation defined on minimal free Cantor systems which is a candidate to generalize flip Kakutani equivalence to actions of the Abelian free groups on more than one generator. This paper characterizes bounded orbit injection equivalence in terms of a mild strengthening of Rieffel-Morita equivalence of the associated C*-crossed-product algebras. Moreover, we construct an ordered group which is an invariant for bounded orbit injection equivalence, and does not agrees with the K\_0 group of the associated C*-crossed-product in general. This new invariant allows us to find sufficient conditions to strengthen bounded orbit injection equivalence to orbit equivalence and strong orbit equivalence.
