Commuting Varieties and Cohomological Complexity

In this paper we determine, for all $r$ sufficiently large, the irreducible component(s) of maximal dimension of the variety of commuting $r$-tuples of nilpotent elements of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$. Our main result is that in characteristic $\neq 2,3$, this nilpotent commuting variety has dimension $(r+1)\lfloor \frac{n^2}{4}\rfloor$ for $n\geq 4$, $r\geq 7$. We use this to find the dimension of the (ordinary) $r$-th commuting varieties of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ for the same range of values of $r$ and $n$. Our principal motivation is the connection between nilpotent commuting varieties and cohomological complexity of finite group schemes, which we exploit in the last section of the paper to obtain explicit values for complexities of a large family of modules over the $r$-th Frobenius kernel $({\rm GL}_n)_{(r)}$. These results indicate an inequality between the complexities of a rational $G$-module $M$ when restricted to $G_{(r)}$ or to $G(\mathbb F_{p^r})$; we subsequently establish this inequality for every simple algebraic group $G$ defined over an algebraically closed field of good characteristic, significantly extending a result of Lin and Nakano.

Cohomology of $SL_2$ and related structures

Let $SL_2$ be the rank one simple algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. The paper presents a new method for computing the dimension of the cohomology spaces $\text{H}^n(SL_2,V(m))$ for Weyl $SL_2$-modules $V(m)$. We provide a closed formula for $\text{dim}\text{H}^n(SL_2,V(m))$ when $n\le 2p-3$ and show that this dimension is bounded by the $(n+1)$-th Fibonacci number. This formula is then used to compute $\text{dim}\text{H}^n(SL_2, V(m))$ for $n=1, 2,$ or $3$. For $n>2p-3$, an exponential bound, only depending on $n$, is obtained for $\text{dim}\text{H}^n(SL_2,V(m))$. Analogous results are also established for the extension spaces $\text{Ext}^n_{SL_2}(V(m_2),V(m_1))$ between Weyl modules $V(m_1)$ and $V(m_2)$. In particular, we determine the degree three extensions for all Weyl modules of $SL_2$. As a byproduct, our results and techniques give explicit upper bounds for the dimensions of the cohomology of the Specht modules of symmetric groups, the cohomology of simple modules of $SL_2$, and the finite group of Lie type $SL_2(p^s)$.

Mixed Commuting Varieties over simple Lie algebras

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a simple Lie algebra defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$. Fix an integer $r>1$ and suppose that $V_1,\ldots,V_r$ are irreducible closed subvarieties of $\mathfrak{g}$. Let $C(V_1,\ldots,V_r)$ be the closed variety of all the pairwise commuting elements in $V_1\times\cdots\times V_r$. This paper studies the dimension and irreducibility of such varieties with various $V_i$ in a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. In particular, we complete the problem for the case when $V_i$'s are either $\overline{\mathcal{O}_{\text{sub}}}$ the closure of the subregular orbit or $\mathcal{N}$ the nilpotent cone of any rank two Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. A result on the dimension of these mixed commuting varieties is generalized for higher ranks. Finally, we apply our calculations to study properties of support varieties for a simple module over the $r$-th Frobenius kernels of $G$.

Rational singularities of $G$-saturation

Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and $P$ be a parabolic subgroup of $G$. Let $M$ be a $P$-module and $V$ be a $P$-stable closed subvariety of $M$. We show in this paper that if the varieties $V$ and $G\cdot M$ have rational singularities, and the induction functor $R^i\text{ind}_P^G(-)$ satisfies certain vanishing condition then the variety $G\cdot V$ has rational singularities. This generalizes the main result of Kempf in [Invent. Math., 37 (1976), no. 3]. As an application, we prove the property of having rational singularities for nilpotent commuting varieties over $3\times 3$ matrices.

On nilpotent commuting varieties and cohomology of Frobenius kernels

The paper studies the dimensions of irreducible components of commuting varieties of (restricted) nilpotent $r$-tuples in a classical Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. As applications, we obtain some new results on the structure of the (even) cohomology ring of Frobenius kernels $G_r$ for each $r\ge 1$, where $G$ is the simply connected, simple algebraic group such that $\text{Lie}(G)=\mathfrak{g}$. Explicit calculations for rank two groups are also presented.

On varieties of commuting nilpotent matrices

Let $N(d,n)$ be the variety of all $d$-tuples of commuting nilpotent $n\times n$ matrices. It is well-known that $N(d,n)$ is irreducible if $d=2$, if $n\le 3$ or if $d=3$ and $n=4$. On the other hand $N(3,n)$ is known to be reducible for $n\ge 13$. We study in this paper the reducibility of $N(d,n)$ for various values of $d$ and $n$. In particular, we prove that $N(d,n)$ is reducible for all $d,n\ge 4$. In the case $d=3$, we show that it is irreducible for $n\le 6$.

Cohomology for Frobenius kernels of $SL_2$

Let $(SL_2)_r$ be the $r$-th Frobenius kernels of the group scheme $SL_2$ defined over an algebraically field of characteristic $p>2$. In this paper we give for $r\ge 1$ a complete description of the cohomology groups for $(SL_2)_r$. We also prove that the reduced cohomology ring $\opH^\bullet((SL_2)_r,k)_{\red}$ is Cohen-Macaulay. Geometrically, we show for each $r\ge 1$ that the maximal ideal spectrum of the cohomology ring for $(SL_2)_r$ is homeomorphic to the fiber product $G\times_B\fraku^r$. Finally, we adapt our calculations to obtain analogous results for the cohomology of higher Frobenius-Luzstig kernels of quantized enveloping algebras of type $SL_2$.

Commuting varieties of $r$-tuples over Lie algebras

Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$ and let $\g$ be the Lie algebra of $G$. It is well known that for $p$ large enough the spectrum of the cohomology ring for the $r$-th Frobenius kernel of $G$ is homeomorphic to the commuting variety of $r$-tuples of elements in the nilpotent cone of $\g$ [Suslin-Friedlander-Bendel, J. Amer. Math. Soc, \textbf{10} (1997), 693--728]. In this paper, we study both geometric and algebraic properties including irreducibility, singularity, normality and Cohen-Macaulayness of the commuting varieties $C_r(\mathfrak{gl}_2), C_r(\fraksl_2)$ and $C_r(\N)$ where $\N$ is the nilpotent cone of $\fraksl_2$. Our calculations lead us to state a conjecture on Cohen-Macaulayness for commuting varieties of $r$-tuples. Furthermore, in the case when $\g=\fraksl_2$, we obtain interesting results about commuting varieties when adding more restrictions into each tuple. In the case of $\fraksl_3$, we are able to verify the aforementioned properties for $C_r(\fraku)$. Finally, applying our calculations on the commuting variety $C_r(\overline{\calO_{\sub}})$ where $\overline{\calO_{\sub}}$ is the closure of the subregular orbit in $\fraksl_3$, we prove that the nilpotent commuting variety $C_r(\N)$ has singularities of codimension $\ge 2$.

Reducibility of nilpotent commuting varieties

Let $\N_n$ be the set of nilpotent $n$ by $n$ matrices over an algebraically closed field $k$. For each $r\ge 2$, let $C_r(\N_n)$ be the variety consisting of all pairwise commuting $r$-tuples of nilpotent matrices. It is well-kown that $C_2(\N_n)$ is irreducible for every $n$. We study in this note the reducibility of $C_r(\N_n)$ for various values of $n$ and $r$. In particular it will be shown that the reducibility of $C_r(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$, the variety of commuting $r$-tuples of $n$ by $n$ matrices, implies that of $C_r(\N_n)$ under certain condition. Then we prove that $C_r(\N_n)$ is reducible for all $n, r\ge 4$. The ingredients of this result are also useful for getting a new lower bound of the dimensions of $C_r(\N_n)$ and $C_r(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$. Finally, we investigate values of $n$ for which the variety $C_3(\N_n)$ of nilpotent commuting triples is reducible.

Cohomology for infinitesimal unipotent algebraic and quantum groups

In this paper we study the structure of cohomology spaces for the Frobenius kernels of unipotent and parabolic algebraic group schemes and of their quantum analogs. Given a simple algebraic group $G$, a parabolic subgroup $P_J$, and its unipotent radical $U_J$, we determine the ring structure of the cohomology ring $H^\bullet((U_J)_1,k)$. We also obtain new results on computing $H^\bullet((P_J)_1,L(λ))$ as an $L_J$-module where $L(λ)$ is a simple $G$-module with high weight $λ$ in the closure of the bottom $p$-alcove. Finally, we provide generalizations of all our results to the quantum situation.
