Asymptotics of zeta determinants of Laplacians on large degree abelian covers

Let $(M,g)$ be some smooth, closed, compact Riemannian manifold and $(M_N\mapsto M)_N$ be an increasing sequence of large degree cyclic covers of $M$ that converges when $N\rightarrow +\infty$, in a suitable sense, to some limit $\mathbb{Z}^p$ cover $M_\infty$ over $M$. Motivated by recent works on zeta determinants on random surfaces and some natural questions in Euclidean quantum field theory, we show the convergence of the sequence $ \frac{\log\det_ζ(Δ_{N})}{\text{Vol}(M_N)} $ when $N\rightarrow +\infty$ where $Δ_N$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $M_N$. We also generalize our results to the case of twisted Laplacians coming from certain flat unitary vector bundles over $M$.

Lorentzian spectral zeta functions on asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes

In this note, we consider perturbations of Minkowski space as well as more general spacetimes on which the wave operator $\square_g$ is essentially self-adjoint. We review a recent result which gives the meromorphic continuation of the Lorentzian spectral zeta function density, i.e. of the trace density of complex powers $α\mapsto (\square_g-i \varepsilon)^{-α}$. In even dimension $n\geq 4$, the residue at $\frac{n}{2}-1$ is shown to be a multiple of the scalar curvature in the limit $\varepsilon\to 0^+$. This yields a spectral action for gravity in Lorentzian signature.

Renormalization of determinant lines in Quantum Field Theory

On a compact manifold $M$, we consider the affine space $A$ of non self-adjoint perturbations of some invertible elliptic operator acting on sections of some Hermitian bundle, by some differential operator of lower order. We construct and classify all complex analytic functions on the Fréchet space $A$ vanishing exactly over non invertible elements, having minimal order and which are obtained by local renormalizations, a concept coming from quantum field theory, called renormalized determinants. The additive group of local polynomial functionals of finite degrees acts freely and transitively on the space of renormalized determinants. We provide different representations of the renormalized determinants in terms of spectral zeta determinants, Gaussian Free Fields, infinite product and renormalized Feynman amplitudes in perturbation theory in position space à la Epstein-Glaser. Specializing to the case of Dirac operators coupled to vector potentials and reformulating our results in terms of determinant line bundles, we prove our renormalized determinants define some complex analytic trivializations of some holomorphic line bundle over $A$ relating our results to a conjectural picture from some unpublished notes by Quillen [52] from April 1989.

Wick squares of the Gaussian Free Field and Riemannian rigidity

In the present paper, we show that on a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $d\leqslant 4$ whose metric has negative curvature, the renormalized partition function $Z_g(λ)$ of a massive Gaussian Free Field determines the length spectrum of $(M,g)$ and imposes some strong geometric constraints on the Riemannian structure of $(M,g)$. In any finite dimensional family of Riemannian metrics of negative sectional curvature bounded from below and above and whose isometry group is trivial, there is only a \textbf{finite number of isometry classes} of metrics with given partition function $Z_g(λ)$. When $d<4$, the same result holds true if the random variable $\int_M:ϕ^2:dv$ has given probability distribution and without the lower bound on the sectional curvatures.

Fried conjecture in small dimensions

We study the twisted Ruelle zeta function $ζ_X(s)$ for smooth Anosov vector fields $X$ acting on flat vector bundles over smooth compact manifolds. In dimension $3$, we prove Fried conjecture, relating Reidemeister torsion and $ζ_X(0)$. In higher dimensions, we show more generally that $ζ_X(0)$ is locally constant with respect to the vector field $X$ under a spectral condition. As a consequence, we also show Fried conjecture for Anosov flows near the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. This gives the first examples of non-analytic Anosov flows and geodesic flows in variable negative curvature where Fried conjecture holds true.

Continuity of the fundamental operations on distributions having a specified wave front set (with a counter example by Semyon Alesker)

The pull-back, push-forward and multiplication of smooth functions can be extended to distributions if their wave front set satisfies some conditions. Thus, it is natural to investigate the topological properties of these operations between spaces D\_$Γ$ of distributions having a wave front set included in a given closed cone $Γ$ of the cotangent space. As discovered by S. Alesker, the pull-back is not continuous for the usual topology on D\_$Γ$ , and the tensor product is not separately continuous. In this paper, a new topology is defined for which the pull-back and push-forward are continuous, the tensor and convolution products and the multiplication of distributions are hypocontinuous.

Equidistribution of the conormal cycle of random nodal sets

We study the asymptotic properties of the conormal cycle of nodal sets associated to a random superposition of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold without boundary. In the case where the dimension is odd, we show that the expectation of the corresponding current of integration equidistributes on the fibers of the cotangent bundle. In the case where the dimension is even, we obtain an upper bound of lower order on the expectation. Using recent results of Alesker, we also deduce some properties on the asymptotic expectation of any smooth valuation including the Euler characteristic of random nodal sets.

Complex powers of analytic functions and meromorphic renormalization in QFT

In this article, we study functional analytic properties of the meromorphic families of distributions $(\prod_{i=1}^p (f_j+i0)^{λ_j})_{(λ_1,\dots,λ_p) \in \mathbb{C}^p}$ using Hironaka's resolution of singularities, then using recent works on the decomposition of meromorphic germs with linear poles, we renormalize products of powers of analytic functions $\prod_{i=1}^p(f_j+i0)^{k_j}, k_j \in \mathbb{Z}$ in the space of distributions. We also study microlocal properties of $(\prod_{i=1}^p (f_j+i0)^{λ_j})_{(λ_1,\dots,λ_p)\in\mathbb{C}^p}$ and $\prod_{i=1}^p (f_j+i0)^{k_j}, k_j \in \mathbb{Z}$. In the second part, we argue that the above families of distributions with \emph{regular holonomic singularities} provide a universal model describing singularities of Feynman amplitudes and give a new proof of renormalizability of quantum field theory on convex analytic Lorentzian spacetimes as applications of ideas from the first part.

Noncommutative version of Borcherds' approach to quantum field theory

Richard Borcherds proposed an elegant geometric version of renormalized perturbative quantum field theory in curved spacetimes, where Lagrangians are sections of a Hopf algebra bundle over a smooth manifold. However, this framework looses its geometric meaning when Borcherds introduces a (graded) commutative normal product. We present a fully geometric version of Borcherds' quantization where the (external) tensor product plays the role of the normal product. We construct a noncommutative many-body Hopf algebra and a module over it which contains all the terms of the perturbative expansion and we quantize it to recover the expectation values of standard quantum field theory when the Hopf algebra fiber is (graded) cocommutative. This construction enables to the second quantize any theory described by a cocommutative Hopf algebra bundle.

A smooth introduction to the wavefront set

The wavefront set provides a precise description of the singularities of a distribution. Because of its ability to control the product of distributions, the wavefront set was a key element of recent progress in renormalized quantum field theory in curved spacetime, quantum gravity, the discussion of time machines or quantum energy inequalitites. However, the wavefront set is a somewhat subtle concept whose standard definition is not easy to grasp. This paper is a step by step introduction to the wavefront set, with examples and motivation. Many different definitions and new interpretations of the wavefront set are presented. Some of them involve a Radon transform.

Extension of distributions, scalings and renormalization of QFT on Riemannian manifolds

Let $M$ be a smooth manifold and $X\subset M$ a closed subset of $M$. In this paper, we introduce a natural condition of \emph{moderate growth} along $X$ for a distribution $t$ in $\mathcal{D}^\prime(M\setminus X)$ and prove that this condition is equivalent to the existence of an extension of $t$ in $\mathcal{D}^\prime(M)$ generalizing some previous results of Meyer and Brunetti--Fredenhagen. When $X$ is a closed submanifold of $M$, we show that the concept of distributions with moderate growth coincides with weakly homogeneous distributions of Meyer. Then we renormalize products of distributions with functions tempered along $X$ and finally, using the whole analytical machinery developed, we give an existence proof of perturbative quantum field theories on Riemannian manifolds.

The Euler characteristic of a surface from its Fourier analysis in one direction

In this paper, we prove that we can recover the genus of a closed compact surface $S$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ from the restriction to a generic line of the Fourier transform of the canonical measure carried by $S$. We also show that the restriction on some line in Minkowski space of the solution of a linear wave equation whose Cauchy data comes from the canonical measure carried by $S$, allows to recover the Euler characteristic of $S$.

The extension of distributions on manifolds, a microlocal approach

Let $M$ be a smooth manifold, $I\subset M$ a closed embedded submanifold of $M$ and $U$ an open subset of $M$. In this paper, we find conditions using a geometric notion of scaling for $t\in \mathcal{D}^\prime(U\setminus I)$ to admit an extension in $\mathcal{D}^\prime(U)$. We give microlocal conditions on $t$ which allow to control the wave front set of the extension generalizing a previous result of Brunetti--Fredenhagen. Furthermore, we show that there is a subspace of extendible distributions for which the wave front of the extension is minimal which has applications for the renormalization of quantum field theory on curved spacetimes.

Renormalization of quantum field theory on curved space-times, a causal approach

The subject of the thesis is the construction of a perturbative quantum theory of interacting fields on a curved space-time, following a point of view pioneered by Stueckelberg and Bogoliubov and developed by Epstein-Glaser on the flat Minkowski space-time. In 2000, a breakthrough was done by Brunetti and Fredenhagen who were able to extend the Epstein-Glaser theory by exploiting the point of view developed by Radzikowski to define quantum states on a curved space-time in terms of wave-front sets. These results were further extended by Fredenhagen, Brunetti, Hollands, Wald, Rejzner, etc. to Yang-Mills fields and the gravitation. However, even for theories without gauge invariance, many mathematical details were left unexplored and unquestioned. Our task was precisely to derive fully rigorously this theory in the case there is no gauge invariance. We propose in our work a complete review of the result, solving numerous questions, adding many new results around this program and, eventually, giving more precise details on the counterterms and ambiguities in the renormalization process, and a deeper understanding of the geometry of the wave front set of the n-point functions.
