On the Mechanical Interaction of Light With Homogeneous Liquids

We investigate one of the consequences of the three competing models describing the mechanical interaction of light with a dielectric medium. According to both the Abraham and Minkowski models the time-averaged force density is zero inside a homogeneous dielectric, whereas the induced-current Lorentz force model predicts a non-zero force density. We argue that the latter force, if exists, could drive a hydrodynamic flow inside a homogeneous fluid. Our numerical experiments show that such flows have distinct spatial patterns and may influence the dynamics of particles in a water-based single-beam optical trap.

Transverse electric scattering on inhomogeneous objects: Singular integral equation, symbol of the operator, and matrix elements

This is a companion report for the paper "Transverse electric scattering on inhomogeneous objects: Spectrum of integral operator and preconditioning" by the present authors. In this report we formulate the two-dimensional transverse electric scattering problem as a standard singular integral equation, derive the symbol of the integral operator for Hölder-continuous contrasts, and calculate the elements of the system matrix obtained after discretization via the mid-point rule.

Transverse electric scattering on inhomogeneous objects: spectrum of integral operator and preconditioning

The domain integral equation method with its FFT-based matrix-vector products is a viable alternative to local methods in free-space scattering problems. However, it often suffers from the extremely slow convergence of iterative methods, especially in the transverse electric (TE) case with large or negative permittivity. We identify the nontrivial essential spectrum of the pertaining integral operator as partly responsible for this behavior, and the main reason why a normally efficient deflating preconditioner does not work. We solve this problem by applying an explicit multiplicative regularizing operator, which transforms the system to the form `identity plus compact', yet allows the resulting matrix-vector products to be carried out at the FFT speed. Such a regularized system is then further preconditioned by deflating an apparently stable set of eigenvalues with largest magnitudes, which results in a robust acceleration of the restarted GMRES under constraint memory conditions.

Superluminal, subluminal, and negative velocities in free-space electromagnetic propagation

In this Chapter the time-domain analysis of the velocity of the electromagnetic field pulses generated by a spatially compact source in free space is presented. Recent simulations and measurements of anomalous superluminal, subluminal, and negative velocities are discussed. It is shown that such velocities are local and instantaneous in nature and do not violate either causality or special relativity. Although these effects are mainly confined to the near- and intermediate-field zones, some of them seem paradoxical and still lack adequate physical interpretation.

On the effective permittivity of finite inhomogeneous objects

A generalization of the S-parameter retrieval method for finite three-dimensional inhomogeneous objects under arbitrary illumination and observation conditions is presented. The effective permittivity of such objects may be rigorously defined as a solution of a nonlinear inverse scattering problem. In this respect the problems of S-parameter retrieval, effective medium theory, and even the derivation of the macroscopic electrodynamics itself, turn out to be all mathematically equivalent. We confirm analytically and observe numerically effects that were previously reported in the one-dimensional strongly inhomogeneous slabs: the non-uniqueness of the effective permittivity and its dependence on the illumination and observation conditions, and the geometry of the object. Moreover, we show that, although the S-parameter retrieval of the effective permittivity is scale-free at the level of problem statement, the exact solution of this problem either does not exist or is not unique. Using the results from the spectral analysis we describe the set of values of the effective permittivity for which the scattering problem is ill-posed. Unfortunately, real nonpositive values, important for negative refraction and invisibility, belong to this set. We illustrate our conclusions using a numerical reduced-order inverse scattering algorithm specifically designed for the effective permittivity problem.
