Discrete Richman-bidding Scoring Games

We study zero-sum (combinatorial) games, within the framework of so-called Richman auctions (Lazarus et al. 1996) namely, we modify the alternating play scoring ruleset Cumulative Subtraction (CS) (Cohensius et al. 2019), to a discrete bidding scheme (similar to Develin and Payne 2010). Players bid to move and the player with the highest bid wins the move, and hands over the winning bidding amount to the other player. The new game is dubbed Bidding Cumulative Subtraction (BCS). In so-called unitary games, players remove exactly one item out of a single heap of identical items, until the heap is empty, and their actions contribute to a common score, which increases or decreases by one unit depending on whether the maximizing player won the turn or not. We show that there is a unique bidding equilibrium for a much larger class of games, that generalize standard scoring play in the literature. We prove that for all sufficiently large heap sizes, the equilibrium outcomes of unitary BCS are eventually periodic, with period 2, and we show that the periodicity appears at the latest for heaps of sizes quadratic in the total budget.

Keeping Your Friends Close: Land Allocation with Friends

We examine the problem of assigning plots of land to prospective buyers who prefer living next to their friends. They care not only about the plot they receive, but also about their neighbors. This externality results in a highly non-trivial problem structure, as both friendship and land value play a role in determining agent behavior. We examine mechanisms that guarantee truthful reporting of both land values and friendships. We propose variants of random serial dictatorship (RSD) that can offer both truthfulness and welfare guarantees. Interestingly, our social welfare guarantees are parameterized by the value of friendship: if these values are low, enforcing truthful behavior results in poor welfare guarantees and imposes significant constraints on agents' choices; if they are high, we achieve good approximation to the optimal social welfare.

Model Explanations with Differential Privacy

Black-box machine learning models are used in critical decision-making domains, giving rise to several calls for more algorithmic transparency. The drawback is that model explanations can leak information about the training data and the explanation data used to generate them, thus undermining data privacy. To address this issue, we propose differentially private algorithms to construct feature-based model explanations. We design an adaptive differentially private gradient descent algorithm, that finds the minimal privacy budget required to produce accurate explanations. It reduces the overall privacy loss on explanation data, by adaptively reusing past differentially private explanations. It also amplifies the privacy guarantees with respect to the training data. We evaluate the implications of differentially private models and our privacy mechanisms on the quality of model explanations.

Three New Results on Continuation Criteria for the 3D Relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell System

In this paper, we consider sufficient conditions, called continuation criteria, for global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to the three-dimensional relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system. In the compact momentum support setting, we prove that $\|p_{0}^{\frac{18}{5r} - 1+β}f\|_{L^{\infty}_{t}L^{r}_{x}L^{1}_{p}} \lesssim 1$, where $1\leq r \leq 2$ and $β>0$ is arbitrarily small, is a continuation criteria. The previously best known continuation criteria in the compact setting is $\|p_{0}^{\frac{4}{r} - 1+β}f\|_{L^{\infty}_{t}L^{r}_{x}L^{1}_{p}} \lesssim 1$, where $1\leq r < \infty$ and $β>0$ is arbitrarily small, is due to work by Kunze. Thus, our continuation criteria is an improvement in the $1\leq r \leq 2$ range. In addition, we consider also sufficient conditions for a global existence result to the three-dimensional relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system without compact support in momentum space, building on previous work by Luk-Strain. In their work, it was shown that $\|p_{0}^θf\|_{L^{1}_{x}L^{1}_{p}} \lesssim 1$ is a continuation criteria for the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system without compact support in momentum space for $θ> 5$. We improve this result to $θ> 3$. We also build on another result by Luk-Strain, in which the authors proved the existence of a global classical solution in the compact momentum support setting given the condition that there exists a two-dimensional plane on which the momentum support of the particle density remains fixed. We prove well-posedness even if the plane varies continuously in time.
