$L_{2,\mathbb{Z}} \otimes L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$ does not embed in $L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$

For a commutative ring $R$ with unit we investigate the embedding of tensor product algebras into the Leavitt algebra $L_{2,R}$. We show that the tensor product $L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}\otimes L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$ does not embed in $L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$ (as a unital $*$-algebra). We also prove a partial non-embedding result for the more general $L_{2,R} \otimes L_{2,R}$. Our techniques rely on realising Thompson's group $V$ as a subgroup of the unitary group of $L_{2,R}$.

The Toeplitz noncommutative solenoid and its KMS states

We use Katsura's topological graphs to define Toeplitz extensions of Latrémolière and Packer's noncommutative-solenoid C*-algebras. We identify a natural dynamics on each Toeplitz noncommutative solenoid and study the associated KMS states. Our main result shows that the space of extreme points of the KMS simplex of the Toeplitz noncommutative torus at a strictly positive inverse temperature is homeomorphic to a solenoid; indeed, there is an action of the solenoid group on the Toeplitz noncommutative solenoid that induces a free and transitive action on the extreme boundary of the KMS simplex. With the exception of the degenerate case of trivial rotations, at inverse temperature zero there is a unique KMS state, and only this one factors through Latrémolière and Packer's noncommutative solenoid.

The boundary quotient for algebraic dynamical systems

We introduce the notion of accurate foundation sets and the accurate refinement property for right LCM semigroups. For right LCM semigroups with this property, we derive a more explicit presentation of the boundary quotient. In the context of algebraic dynamical systems, we also analyse finiteness properties of foundation sets which lead us to a very concrete presentation. Based on Starling's recent work, we provide sharp conditions on certain algebraic dynamical systems for pure infiniteness and simplicity of their boundary quotient.

Crossed products and twisted $k$-graph algebras

An automorphism $β$ of a $k$-graph $Λ$ induces a crossed product $C^* ( Λ) \rtimes_β\mathbb{Z}$ which is isomorphic to a $(k+1)$-graph algebra $C^* ( Λ\times_β\mathbb{Z})$. In this paper we show how this process interacts with $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras which have been twisted by an element of their second cohomology group. This analysis is done using a long exact sequence in cohomology associated to this data. We conclude with some examples

Zappa-Szép products of semigroups and their C*-algebras

Zappa-Szép products of semigroups encompass both the self-similar group actions of Nekrashevych and the quasi-lattice-ordered groups of Nica. We use Li's construction of semigroup $C^*$-algebras to associate a $C^*$-algebra to Zappa-Szép products and give an explicit presentation of the algebra. We then define a quotient $C^*$-algebra that generalises the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras for self-similar actions. We indicate how known examples, previously viewed as distinct classes, fit into our unifying framework. We specifically discuss the Baumslag-Solitar groups, the binary adding machine, the semigroup $\mathbb{N}\rtimes\mathbb{N}^\times$, and the $ax+b$-semigroup $\mathbb{Z}\rtimes\mathbb{Z}^\times$.

Two families of Exel-Larsen crossed products

Larsen has recently extended Exel's construction of crossed products from single endomorphisms to abelian semigroups of endomorphisms, and here we study two families of her crossed products. First, we look at the natural action of the multiplicative semigroup $\mathbb{N}^\times$ on a compact abelian group $Γ$, and the induced action on $C(Γ)$. We prove a uniqueness theorem for the crossed product, and we find a class of connected compact abelian groups $Γ$ for which the crossed product is purely infinite simple. Second, we consider some natural actions of the additive semigroup $\mathbb{N}^2$ on the UHF cores in 2-graph algebras, as introduced by Yang, and confirm that these actions have properties similar to those of single endomorphisms of the core in Cuntz algebras.

Realising the C*-algebra of a higher-rank graph as an Exel crossed product

We use the boundary-path space of a finitely-aligned k-graph Λto construct a compactly-aligned product system X, and we show that the graph algebra C^*(Λ) is isomorphic to the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra NO(X). In this setting, we introduce the notion of a crossed product by a semigroup of partial endomorphisms and partially-defined transfer operators by defining it to be NO(X). We then compare this crossed product with other definitions in the literature.

Boundary quotients of the Toeplitz algebra of the affine semigroup over the natural numbers

We study the Toeplitz algebra $\TT(\N\rtimes\N^\times)$ and three quotients of this algebra: the $C^*$-algebra $\qn$ recntly introduced by Cuntz, and two new ones, which we call the additive and multiplicative boundary quotients. These quotients are universal for Nica-covariant representations of $\N\rtimes\N^\times$ satisfying extra relations, and can be realised as partial crossed products. We use the structure theory for partial crossed products to prove a uniqueness theorem for the additive boundary quotient, and use the recent analysis of KMS states on $\TT(\nxnx)$ to describe the KMS states on the two quotients. We then show that $\TT(\nxnx)$, $\qn$ and our new quotients are all interesting new examples for Larsen's theory of Exel crossed products by semigroups.

Co-universal C*-algebras associated to generalised graphs

We introduce P-graphs, which are generalisations of directed graphs in which paths have a degree in a semigroup P rather than a length in N. We focus on semigroups P arising as part of a quasi-lattice ordered group (G,P) in the sense of Nica, and on P-graphs which are finitely aligned in the sense of Raeburn and Sims. We show that each finitely aligned P-graph admits a C*-algebra C*_{min}(Lambda) which is co-universal for partial-isometric representations of Lambda which admit a coaction of G compatible with the P-valued length function. We also characterise when a homomorphism induced by the co-universal property is injective. Our results combined with those of Spielberg show that every Kirchberg algebra is Morita equivalent C*_{min}(Lambda) for some (N^2 * N)-graph Lambda.

Exel's crossed product for non-unital C*-algebras

We consider a family of dynamical systems (A,alpha,L) in which alpha is an endomorphism of a C*-algebra A and L is a transfer operator for α. We extend Exel's construction of a crossed product to cover non-unital algebras A, and show that the C*-algebra of a locally finite graph can be realised as one of these crossed products. When A is commutative, we find criteria for the simplicity of the crossed product, and analyse the ideal structure of the crossed product.
