Ricci flow on surfaces with conic singularities

We establish the short-time existence of the Ricci flow on surfaces with a finite number of conic points, all with cone angle between 0 and $2π$, where the cone angles remain fixed or change in some smooth prescribed way. For the angle-preserving flow we prove long-time existence and convergence. When the Troyanov angle condition is satisfied (equivalently, when the data is logarithmically K-stable), the flow converges to the unique constant curvature metric with the given cone angles; if this condition is not satisfied, the flow converges subsequentially to a soliton. This is the one-dimensional version of the Hamilton--Tian conjecture.

Unique asymptotics of ancient convex mean curvature flow solutions

We study the compact noncollapsed ancient convex solutions to Mean Curvature Flow in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with $O(1)\times O(n)$ symmetry. We show they all have unique asymptotics as $t\to -\infty$ and we give precise asymptotic description of these solutions. In particular, solutions constructed by White, and Haslhofer and Hershkovits have those asymptotics (in the case of those particular solutions the asymptotics was predicted and formally computed by Angenent).

Ricci flow neckpinches without rotational symmetry

We study "warped Berger" solutions $\big(\mc S^1\times\mc S^3,G(t)\big)$ of Ricci flow: generalized warped products with the metric induced on each fiber $\{s\}\times\mathrm{SU}(2)$ a left-invariant Berger metric. We prove that this structure is preserved by the flow, that these solutions develop finite-time neckpinch singularities, and that they asymptotically approach round product metrics in space-time neighborhoods of their singular sets, in precise senses. These are the first examples of Ricci flow solutions without rotational symmetry that become asymptotically rotationally symmetric locally as they develop local finite-time singularities.

Extinction profile of complete non-compact solutions to the Yamabe flow

This work addresses the {\em singularity formation} of complete non-compact solutions to the conformally flat Yamabe flow whose conformal factors have {\em cylindrical behavior at infinity}. Their singularity profiles happen to be {\em Yamabe solitons}, which are {\em self-similar solutions} to the fast diffusion equation satisfied by the conformal factor of the evolving metric. The self-similar profile is determined by the second order asymptotics at infinity of the initial data which is matched with that of the corresponding self-similar solution. Solutions may become extinct at the extinction time $T$ of the cylindrical tail or may live longer than $T$. In the first case the singularity profile is described by a {\em Yamabe shrinker} that becomes extinct at time $T$. In the second case, the singularity profile is described by a {\em singular} Yamabe shrinker slightly before $T$ and by a matching {\em Yamabe expander} slightly after $T$ .

Classification of singularities in the complete conformally flat Yamabe flow

We show that an eternal solution to a complete, locally conformally flat Yamabe flow, $\frac{\partial}{\partial t} g = -Rg$, with uniformly bounded scalar curvature and positive Ricci curvature at $t = 0$, where the scalar curvature assumes its maximum is a gradient steady soliton. As an application of that, we study the blow up behavior of $g(t)$ at the maximal time of existence, $T < \infty$. We assume that $(M,g(\cdot, t))$ satisfies (i) the injectivity radius bound {\bf or} (ii) the Schouten tensor is positive at time $t = 0$ and the scalar curvature bounded at each time-slice. We show that the singularity the flow develops at time $T$ is always of type I.

The classification of locally conformally flat Yamabe solitons

We provide the classification of locally conformally flat gradient Yamabe solitons with positive sectional curvature. We first show that locally conformally flat gradient Yamabe solitons with positive sectional curvature have to be rotationally symmetric and then give the classification and asymptotic behavior of all radially symmetric gradient Yamabe solitons. We also show that any eternal solutions to the Yamabe flow with positive Ricci curvature and with the scalar curvature attaining an interior space-time maximum must be a steady Yamabe soliton.

Type II ancient compact solutions to the Yamabe flow

We construct new type II ancient compact solutions to the Yamabe flow. Our solutions are rotationally symmetric and converge, as $t \to -\infty$, to a tower of two spheres. Their curvature operator changes sign. We allow two time-dependent parameters in our ansatz. We use perturbation theory, via fixed point arguments, based on sharp estimates on ancient solutions of the approximated linear equation and careful estimation of the error terms which allow us to make the right choice of parameters. Our technique may be viewed as a parabolic analogue of gluing two exact solutions to the rescaled equation, that is the spheres, with narrow cylindrical necks to obtain a new ancient solution to the Yamabe flow. The techniques in this article may be generalized to the gluing of $n$ spheres.

On gradient Ricci solitons

In the first part of the paper we derive integral curvature estimates for complete gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. Our results and the recent work of Lopez-Rio imply rigidity of gradient shrinking Ricci solitons with harmonic Weyl tensor. In the second part of the paper we address the issue of existence of harmonic functions on gradient shrinking Kähler and gradient steady Ricci solitons and show that if the total energy of a harmonic function on such a manifold is finite then the function is constant. Consequences to the structure of the manifold at infinity are also discussed.

Ricci Flow in Two Dimensions

Ricci flow on two dimensional surfaces is far simpler than in the higher dimensional cases. This presents an opportunity to obtain much more detailed and comprehensive results. We review the basic facts about this flow, including the original results by Hamilton and Chow concerning Ricci flow on compact surfaces. The rationale for this paper, however, is especially to survey recent work concerning this flow on open surfaces, including various classes of both complete and incomplete surfaces, where a number of striking new phenomena have been observed.

Blow-up rate of the mean curvature during the mean curvature flow and a gap theorem for self-shrinkers

In this paper, we prove that the mean curvature blows up at the same rate as the second fundamental form at the first singular time $T$ of any compact, Type I mean curvature flow. For the mean curvature flow of surfaces, we obtain similar result provided that the Gaussian density is less than two. Our proofs are based on continuous rescaling and the classification of self-shrinkers. We show that all notions of singular sets defined in \cite{St} coincide for any Type I mean curvature flow, thus generalizing the result of Stone who established that for any mean convex Type I Mean curvature flow. We also establish a gap theorem for self-shrinkers.

Remarks on curvature behavior at the first singular time of the Ricci flow

In this paper, we study curvature behavior at the first singular time of solution to the Ricci flow on a smooth, compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$, $\frac{\partial}{\partial t}g_{ij} = -2R_{ij}$ for $t\in [0,T)$. If the flow has uniformly bounded scalar curvature and develops Type I singularities at $T$, using Perelman's $\mathcal{W}$-functional, we show that suitable blow-ups of our evolving metrics converge in the pointed Cheeger-Gromov sense to a Gaussian shrinker. If the flow has uniformly bounded scalar curvature and develops Type II singularities at $T$, we show that suitable scalings of the potential functions in Perelman's entropy functional converge to a positive constant on a complete, Ricci flat manifold. We also show that if the scalar curvature is uniformly bounded along the flow in certain integral sense then the flow either develops a type II singularity at $T$ or it can be smoothly extended past time $T$.

Ricci flow on asymptotically conical surfaces with nontrivial topology

As part of the general investigation of Ricci flow on complete surfaces with finite total curvature, we study this flow for surfaces with asymptotically conical (which includes as a special case asymptotically Euclidean) geometries. After establishing long-time existence, and in particular the fact that the flow preserves the asymptotically conic geometry, we prove that the solution metric $g(t)$ expands at a locally uniform linear rate; moreover, the rescaled family of metrics $t^{-1}g(t)$ exhibits a transition at infinite time inasmuch as it converges locally uniformly to a complete, finite area hyperbolic metric which is the unique uniformizing metric in the conformal class of the initial metric $g_0$.

The mean curvature at the first singular time of the mean curvature flow

Consider a family of smooth immersions $F(\cdot,t): M^n\to \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ of closed hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ moving by the mean curvature flow $\frac{\partial F(p,t)}{\partial t} = -H(p,t)\cdot ν(p,t)$, for $t\in [0,T)$. We prove that the mean curvature blows up at the first singular time $T$ if all singularities are of type I. In the case $n = 2$, regardless of the type of a possibly forming singularity, we show that at the first singular time the mean curvature necessarily blows up provided that either the Multiplicity One Conjecture holds or the Gaussian density is less than two. We also establish and give several applications of a local regularity theorem which is a parabolic analogue of Choi-Schoen estimate for minimal submanifolds.

On the extension of the mean curvature flow

Consider a family of smooth immersions $F(\cdot,t): M^n\to \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ of closed hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ moving by the mean curvature flow $\frac{\partial F(p,t)}{\partial t} = -H(p,t)\cdot ν(p,t)$, for $t\in [0,T)$. In \cite{Cooper} Cooper has recently proved that the mean curvature blows up at the singular time $T$. We show that if the second fundamental form stays bounded from below all the way to $T$, then the scaling invariant mean curvature integral bound is enough to extend the flow past time $T$, and this integral bound is optimal in some sense explained below.
