A rigorous derivation of the Hamiltonian structure for the Vlasov equation

We consider the Vlasov equation in any spatial dimension, which has long been known to be an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system whose bracket structure is of Lie-Poisson type. In parallel, it is classical that the Vlasov equation is a mean-field limit for a pairwise interacting Newtonian system. Motivated by this knowledge, we provide a rigorous derivation of the Hamiltonian structure of the Vlasov equation, both the Hamiltonian functional and Poisson bracket, directly from the many-body problem. One may view this work as a classical counterpart to arXiv:1908.03847, which provided a rigorous derivation of the Hamiltonian structure of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation from the many-body problem for interacting bosons in a certain infinite particle number limit, the first result of its kind. In particular, our work settles a question of Marsden, Morrison, and Weinstein on providing a "statistical basis" for the bracket structure of the Vlasov equation.

Higher order corrections to the mean-field description of the dynamics of interacting bosons

In this paper, we introduce a novel method for deriving higher order corrections to the mean-field description of the dynamics of interacting bosons. More precisely, we consider the dynamics of $N$ $d$-dimensional bosons for large $N$. The bosons initially form a Bose-Einstein condensate and interact with each other via a pair potential of the form $(N-1)^{-1}N^{dβ}v(N^β\cdot)$ for $β\in[0,\frac{1}{4d})$. We derive a sequence of $N$-body functions which approximate the true many-body dynamics in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^{d N})$-norm to arbitrary precision in powers of $N^{-1}$. The approximating functions are constructed as Duhamel expansions of finite order in terms of the first quantised analogue of a Bogoliubov time evolution.

Higher order energy conservation and global wellposedness of solutions for Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchies

We consider the cubic and quintic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies in $d$ dimensions, for focusing and defocusing interactions. We introduce new higher order energy functionals and prove that they are conserved for solutions of energy subcritical defocusing, and $L^2$ subcritical (de)focusing GP hierarchies, in spaces also used by Erdös, Schlein and Yau in \cite{esy1,esy2}. By use of this tool, we prove a priori $H^1$ bounds for positive semidefinite solutions in those spaces. Moreover, we obtain global well-posedness results for positive semidefinite solutions in the spaces studied in the works of Klainerman and Machedon, \cite{klma}, and in \cite{chpa2}. As part of our analysis, we prove generalizations of Sobolev and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities for density matrices.

Multilinear Morawetz identities for the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy

This article consists of two parts. In the first part, we review the most recent proofs establishing quadratic Morawetz inequalities for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). We also describe the applications of these estimates to the problem of quantum scattering. In the second part, we generalize some of the methods developed for the NLS by many authors to the case of Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies. In particular, we prove both regular and interaction Morawetz identities for the GP hierarchy, which appear here for the first time in the literature.

Almost sure existence of global weak solutions for super-critical Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper we show that after suitable data randomization there exists a large set of super-critical periodic initial data, in $H^{-α}({\mathbb T}^d)$ for some $α(d) > 0$, for both 2d and 3d Navier-Stokes equations for which global energy bounds are proved. As a consequence, we obtain almost sure super-critical global weak solutions. We also show that in 2d these global weak solutions are unique.

A new proof of existence of solutions for focusing and defocusing Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchies

We consider the cubic and quintic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies in $d\geq1$ dimensions, for focusing and defocusing interactions. We present a new proof of existence of solutions that does not require the a priori bound on the spacetime norm, which was introduced in the work of Klainerman and Machedon, \cite{klma}, and used in our earlier work, \cite{chpa2}.

Stability and Unconditional Uniqueness of Solutions for Energy Critical Wave Equations in High Dimensions

In this paper we establish a complete local theory for the energy-critical nonlinear wave equation (NLW) in high dimensions ${\mathbb R} \times {\mathbb R}^d$ with $d \geq 6$. We prove the stability of solutions under the weak condition that the perturbation of the linear flow is small in certain space-time norms. As a by-product of our stability analysis, we also prove local well-posedness of solutions for which we only assume the smallness of the linear evolution. These results provide essential technical tools that can be applied towards obtaining the extension to high dimensions of the analysis of Kenig and Merle \cite{keme06} of the dynamics of the focusing (NLW) below the energy threshold. By employing refined paraproduct estimates we also prove unconditional uniqueness of solutions for $d\ge 5$ in the natural energy class. This extends an earlier result by Furioli, Planchon and Terraneo \cite{FPT03} in dimension $d=4$.

The quintic NLS as the mean field limit of a Boson gas with three-body interactions

We investigate the dynamics of a boson gas with three-body interactions in dimensions $d=1,2$. We prove that in the limit of infinite particle number, the BBGKY hierarchy of $k$-particle marginals converges to a limiting (Gross-Pitaevskii (GP)) hierarchy for which we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions. Factorized solutions of the GP hierarchy are shown to be determined by solutions of a quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Our proof is based on, and extends, methods of Erdös-Schlein-Yau, Klainerman-Machedon, and Kirkpatrick-Schlein-Staffilani.

Energy conservation and blowup of solutions for focusing Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchies

We consider solutions of the focusing cubic and quintic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies. We identify an observable corresponding to the average energy per particle, and we prove that it is a conserved quantity. We prove that all solutions to the focusing GP hierarchy at the $L^2$-critical or $L^2$-supercritical level blow up in finite time if the energy per particle in the initial condition is negative. Our results do not assume any factorization of the initial data.

On the Cauchy problem for focusing and defocusing Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchies

We consider the dynamical Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy on $\R^d$, $d\geq1$, for cubic, quintic, focusing and defocusing interactions. For both the focusing and defocusing case, and any $d\geq1$, we prove local existence and uniqueness of solutions in certain Sobolev type spaces $\cH_ξ^α$ of sequences of marginal density matrices. The regularity is accounted for by $α>\frac12& if $d=1$, $α>\frac d2-\frac{1}{2(p-1)} $ if $d\geq2$ and $(d,p)\neq(3,2)$, and $α\geq1$ if $(d,p)=(3,2)$, where $p=2$ for the cubic, and $p=4$ for the quintic GP hierarchy; the parameter $ξ>0$ is arbitrary and determines the energy scale of the problem. This result includes the proof of an a priori spacetime bound conjectured by Klainerman and Machedon for the cubic GP hierarchy in $d=3$. In the defocusing case, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions globally in time for the cubic GP hierarchy for $1\leq d\leq3$, and of the quintic GP hierarchy for $1\leq d\leq 2$, in an appropriate space of Sobolev type, and under the assumption of an a priori energy bound. For the focusing GP hierarchies, we prove lower bounds on the blowup rate. Also pseudoconformal invariance is established in the cases corresponding to $L^2$ criticality, both in the focusing and defocusing context. All of these results hold without the assumption of factorized initial conditions.

Global well-posedness and polynomial bounds for the defocusing $L^{2}$-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $\R$

We prove global well-posedness for low regularity data for the one dimensional quintic defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Precisely we show that a unique and global solution exists for initial data in the Sobolev space $H^{s}(\mathbb R)$ for any $s>{1/3}$. This improves the result in \cite{tz}, where global well-posedness was established for any $s>{4/9}$. We use the $I$-method to take advantage of the conservation laws of the equation. The new ingredient in our proof is an interaction Morawetz estimate for the smoothed out solution $Iu$. As a byproduct of our proof we also obtain that the $H^{s}$ norm of the solution obeys polynomial-in-time bounds.

Regularity of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations evolving from small data in BMO^{-1}

In 2001, H. Koch and D. Tataru proved the existence of global in time solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in ${\mathbb{R}}^d$ for initial data small enough in $BMO^{-1}$. We show in this article that the Koch and Tataru solution has higher regularity. As a consequence, we get a decay estimate in time for any space derivative, and space analyticity of the solution. Also as an application of our regularity theorem, we prove a regularity result for self-similar solutions.

Global Well-Posedness for a periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in 1D and 2D

The initial value problem for the $L^{2}$ critical semilinear Schrödinger equation with periodic boundary data is considered. We show that the problem is globally well posed in $H^{s}({\Bbb T^{d}})$, for $s>4/9$ and $s>2/3$ in 1D and 2D respectively, confirming in 2D a statement of Bourgain in \cite{bo2}. We use the ``$I$-method''. This method allows one to introduce a modification of the energy functional that is well defined for initial data below the $H^{1}({\Bbb T^{d}})$ threshold. The main ingredient in the proof is a "refinement" of the Strichartz's estimates that hold true for solutions defined on the rescaled space, $\Bbb T^{d}_λ = \Bbb R^{d}/{λ\Bbb Z^{d}}$, $d=1,2$.
