A rigorous derivation of the Hamiltonian structure for the Vlasov equation

We consider the Vlasov equation in any spatial dimension, which has long been known to be an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system whose bracket structure is of Lie-Poisson type. In parallel, it is classical that the Vlasov equation is a mean-field limit for a pairwise interacting Newtonian system. Motivated by this knowledge, we provide a rigorous derivation of the Hamiltonian structure of the Vlasov equation, both the Hamiltonian functional and Poisson bracket, directly from the many-body problem. One may view this work as a classical counterpart to arXiv:1908.03847, which provided a rigorous derivation of the Hamiltonian structure of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation from the many-body problem for interacting bosons in a certain infinite particle number limit, the first result of its kind. In particular, our work settles a question of Marsden, Morrison, and Weinstein on providing a "statistical basis" for the bracket structure of the Vlasov equation.

Sharp Strichartz estimates for some variable coefficient Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}^2$

In the first part of the paper we continue the study of solutions to Schrödinger equations with a time singularity in the dispersive relation and in the periodic setting. In the second we show that if the Schrödinger operator involves a Laplace operator with variable coefficients with a particular dependence on the space variables, then one can prove Strichartz estimates at the same regularity as that needed for constant coefficients. Our work presents a two dimensional analysis, but we expect that with the obvious adjustments similar results are available in higher dimensions.

Uniqueness of Solutions to the Spectral Hierarchy in Kinetic Wave Turbulence Theory

In arXiv:1201.4067 and arXiv:1611.08030, Eyink and Shi and Chibbaro et al., respectively, formally derived an infinite, coupled hierarchy of equations for the spectral correlation functions of a system of weakly interacting nonlinear dispersive waves with random phases in the standard kinetic limit. Analogously to the relationship between the Boltzmann hierarchy and Boltzmann equation, this spectral hierarchy admits a special class of factorized solutions, where each factor is a solution to the wave kinetic equation (WKE). A question left open by these works and highly relevant for the mathematical derivation of the WKE is whether solutions of the spectral hierarchy are unique, in particular whether factorized initial data necessarily lead to factorized solutions. In this article, we affirmatively answer this question in the case of 4-wave interactions by showing, for the first time, that this spectral hierarchy is well-posed in an appropriate function space. Our proof draws on work of Chen and Pavlović for the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy in quantum many-body theory and of Germain et al. for the well-posedness of the WKE.

On the nonlinear Dysthe equation

This work is dedicated to putting on a solid analytic ground the theory of local well-posedness for the two dimensional Dysthe equation. This equation can be derived from the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation after performing an asymptotic expansion of a wavetrain modulation to the fourth order. Recently, this equation has been used to numerically study rare phenomena on large water bodies such as rogue waves. In order to study well-posedness, we use Strichartz, and improved smoothing and maximal function estimates. We follow ideas from the pioneering work of Kenig, Ponce and Vega, but since the equation is highly anisotropic, several technical challenges had to be resolved. We conclude our work by also presenting an ill-posedness result.

Smoothing effect for time-degenerate Schrödinger operators

In this work we consider an example of a linear time-degenerate Schrödinger operator. We show that with the appropriate assumptions the operator satisfies a Kato smoothing effect. We also show that the solutions to the nonlinear initial value problems involving this operator and polynomial derivative nonlinearities are locally well-posed and their solutions also satisfy the same smoothing estimates as the linear solutions.

Stability of the Cubic Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation on Irrational Tori

A characteristic of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), when defined so that the space variable is the multi-dimensional square (hence rational) torus, is that there exist solutions that start with arbitrarily small norms Sobolev norms and evolve to develop arbitrarily large modes at later times; this phenomenon is recognized as a weak energy transfer to high modes for the NLSE. In this paper, we show that when the system is considered on an irrational torus, energy transfer is more difficult to detect.

A Semi-linear Shifted Wave Equation on the Hyperbolic Spaces with Application on a Quintic Wave Equation on ${\mathbb R}^2$

In this paper we consider a semi-linear, defocusing, shifted wave equation on the hyperbolic space \[ \partial_t^2 u - (Δ_{{\mathbb H}^n} + ρ^2) u = - |u|^{p-1} u, \quad (x,t)\in {\mathbb H}^n \times {\mathbb R}; \] and introduce a Morawetz-type inequality \[ \int_{-T_-}^{T_+} \int_{{\mathbb H}^n} |u|^{p+1} dμdt < C E, \] where $E$ is the energy. Combining this inequality with a well-posedness theory, we can establish a scattering result for solutions with initial data in $H^{1/2,1/2} \times H^{1/2,-1/2}({\mathbb H}^n)$ if $2 \leq n \leq 6$ and $1<p<p_c = 1+ 4/(n-2)$. As another application we show that a solution to the quintic wave equation $\partial_t^2 u - Δu = - |u|^4 u$ on ${\mathbb R}^2$ scatters if its initial data are radial and satisfy the conditions \[ |\nabla u_0 (x)|, |u_1 (x)| \leq A(|x|+1)^{-3/2-\varepsilon};\quad |u_0 (x)| \leq A(|x|)^{-1/2-\varepsilon};\quad \varepsilon >0. \]

Randomization and the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy

We study the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy on the spatial domain $\mathbb{T}^3$. By using an appropriate randomization of the Fourier coefficients in the collision operator, we prove an averaged form of the main estimate which is used in order to contract the Duhamel terms that occur in the study of the hierarchy. In the averaged estimate, we do not need to integrate in the time variable. An averaged spacetime estimate for this range of regularity exponents then follows as a direct corollary. The range of regularity exponents that we obtain is $α>\frac{3}{4}$. It was shown in our previous joint work with Gressman that the range $α>1$ is sharp in the corresponding deterministic spacetime estimate. This is in contrast to the non-periodic setting, which was studied by Klainerman and Machedon, in which the spacetime estimate is known to hold whenever $α\geq 1$. The goal of our paper is to extend the range of $α$ in this class of estimates in a \emph{probabilistic sense}. We use the new estimate and the ideas from its proof in order to study randomized forms of the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy. More precisely, we consider hierarchies similar to the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy, but in which the collision operator has been randomized. For these hierarchies, we show convergence to zero in low regularity Sobolev spaces of Duhamel expansions of fixed deterministic density matrices. We believe that the study of the randomized collision operators could be the first step in the understanding of a nonlinear form of randomization.

Almost sure existence of global weak solutions for super-critical Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper we show that after suitable data randomization there exists a large set of super-critical periodic initial data, in $H^{-α}({\mathbb T}^d)$ for some $α(d) > 0$, for both 2d and 3d Navier-Stokes equations for which global energy bounds are proved. As a consequence, we obtain almost sure super-critical global weak solutions. We also show that in 2d these global weak solutions are unique.

On the continuum limit for discrete NLS with long-range lattice interactions

We consider a general class of discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equations (DNLS) on the lattice $h \mathbb{Z}$ with mesh size $h>0$. In the continuum limit when $h \to 0$, we prove that the limiting dynamics are given by a nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLS) on $\mathbb{R}$ with the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^α$ as dispersive symbol. In particular, we obtain that fractional powers $1/2 < α< 1$ arise from long-range lattice interactions when passing to the continuum limit, whereas NLS with the non-fractional Laplacian $-Δ$ describes the dispersion in the continuum limit for short-range lattice interactions (e.g., nearest-neighbor interactions). Our results rigorously justify certain NLS model equations with fractional Laplacians proposed in the physics literature. Moreover, the arguments given in our paper can be also applied to discuss the continuum limit for other lattice systems with long-range interactions.

Absolute continuity of Brownian bridges under certain gauge transformations

We prove absolute continuity of Gaussian measures associated to complex Brownian bridges under certain gauge transformations. As an application we prove that the invariant measure for the periodic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation obtained by Nahmod, Oh, Rey-Bellet and Staffilani in [20], and with respect to which they proved almost surely global well-posedness, coincides with the weighted Wiener measure constructed by Thomann and Tzvetkov [24]. Thus, in particular we prove the invariance of the measure constructed in [24].

Invariant weighted Wiener measures and almost sure global well-posedness for the periodic derivative NLS

In this paper we construct an invariant weighted Wiener measure associated to the periodic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation in one dimension and establish global well-posedness for data living in its support. In particular almost surely for data in a Fourier-Lebesgue space ${\mathcal F}L^{s,r}(\T)$ with $s \ge \frac{1}{2}$, $2 < r < 4$, $(s-1)r <-1$ and scaling like $H^{\frac{1}{2}-ε}(\T),$ for small $ε>0$. We also show the invariance of this measure.

On the global well-posedness of energy-critical Schrödinger equations in curved spaces

In this paper we present a method to study global regularity properties of solutions of large-data critical Schrodinger equations on certain noncompact Riemannian manifolds. We rely on concentration compactness arguments and a global Morawetz inequality adapted to the geometry of the manifold (in other words we adapt the method of Kenig-Merle to the variable coefficient case), and a good understanding of the corresponding Euclidean problem (in our case the main theorem of Colliander-Keel-Staffilani-Takaoka-Tao). As an application we prove global well-posedness and scattering in $H^1$ for the energy-critical defocusing initial-value problem (i\partial_t+Δ_\g)u=u|u|^{4} on the hyperbolic space $H^3$.

Global well-posedness and polynomial bounds for the defocusing $L^{2}$-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $\R$

We prove global well-posedness for low regularity data for the one dimensional quintic defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Precisely we show that a unique and global solution exists for initial data in the Sobolev space $H^{s}(\mathbb R)$ for any $s>{1/3}$. This improves the result in \cite{tz}, where global well-posedness was established for any $s>{4/9}$. We use the $I$-method to take advantage of the conservation laws of the equation. The new ingredient in our proof is an interaction Morawetz estimate for the smoothed out solution $Iu$. As a byproduct of our proof we also obtain that the $H^{s}$ norm of the solution obeys polynomial-in-time bounds.

Regularity of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations evolving from small data in BMO^{-1}

In 2001, H. Koch and D. Tataru proved the existence of global in time solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in ${\mathbb{R}}^d$ for initial data small enough in $BMO^{-1}$. We show in this article that the Koch and Tataru solution has higher regularity. As a consequence, we get a decay estimate in time for any space derivative, and space analyticity of the solution. Also as an application of our regularity theorem, we prove a regularity result for self-similar solutions.

Global Well-Posedness for a periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in 1D and 2D

The initial value problem for the $L^{2}$ critical semilinear Schrödinger equation with periodic boundary data is considered. We show that the problem is globally well posed in $H^{s}({\Bbb T^{d}})$, for $s>4/9$ and $s>2/3$ in 1D and 2D respectively, confirming in 2D a statement of Bourgain in \cite{bo2}. We use the ``$I$-method''. This method allows one to introduce a modification of the energy functional that is well defined for initial data below the $H^{1}({\Bbb T^{d}})$ threshold. The main ingredient in the proof is a "refinement" of the Strichartz's estimates that hold true for solutions defined on the rescaled space, $\Bbb T^{d}_λ = \Bbb R^{d}/{λ\Bbb Z^{d}}$, $d=1,2$.

Scattering theory for radial nonlinear Schrödinger equations on hyperbolic space

We study the long time behavior of radial solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations on hyperbolic space. We show that the usual distinction between short range and long range nonlinearity is modified: the geometry of the hyperbolic space makes every power-like nonlinearity short range. The proofs rely on weighted Strichartz estimates, which imply Strichartz estimates for a broader family of admissible pairs, and on Morawetz type inequalities. The latter are established without symmetry assumptions.
