$\frac{|V_{ub}|}{|V_{cb}|}$ and Quest for New Physics

Charged current semi-leptonic decays of $B$-meson are important for a precise determination of the CKM elements. The CKM elements $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$ show a discrepancy between the exclusive and inclusive determinations. These determinations are however masked with hadronic and other uncertainties, and thus can't be unambiguously taken as implying new physics. In the present study, we propose a new observable: the ratio of these two CKM elements, $R_V \equiv \frac{|V_{ub}|}{|V_{cb}|}$, which is found to receive negligible corrections due to hadronic as well as QED effects. Interestingly, $R_V$ as constructed from exclusive determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$ agrees quite well with that constructed from the inclusive determinations of these CKM elements. Hence, we propose that $R_V$ is a better and cleaner observable, and can serve as an excellent tool for the test of the Standard Model. We also provide an example of its probing power.

Light Cone Sum Rules and Form Factors for $p\rightarrow e^+ γ$

Proton decay is a baryon number violating process, and hence is forbidden in the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Baryon number violation is expected to be an important criteria to explain the matter-anti-matter asymmetry of the universe. Any detection of the proton decay will be a direct evidence of physics beyond the SM. In SMEFT, proton decay is possible via baryon number violating dimension-6 operators. In this work, we pay attention to the decay channel $p\rightarrow e^+ γ$ which is expected to be an experimentally cleaner channel due to less nuclear absorption. The gauge invariant amplitude of this process involves two form factors. We calculate these form factors in the framework of light cone sum rules (LCSR) using photon DAs upto two particle twist-3 accuracy as well as proton DAs of twist-3 accuracy. We find that the form factors calculated using photon DAs are more reliable.

Probing the structure of the $B$ meson with $B\to\ell\ell\ell'ν$

We consider the decay $B\to\ell\ell\ell^{\prime}ν$, taking into account the leading $1/m_b$ and $q^2$ corrections calculated in the QCD factorization framework as well as the soft corrections calculated employing dispersion relations and quark-hadron duality. We extend the existing results for the radiative decay $B\toγ\ellν$ to the case of non-zero (but small) $q^2$, the invariant mass squared of the dilepton pair $\ell^+\ell^-$. This restricts us to the case $\ell\neq\ell'$ as otherwise the same sign $\ell$ and $\ell'$ cannot be distinguished. We further study the sensitivity of the results to the leading moment of the $B$-meson distribution amplitude and discuss the potential to extract this quantity at LHCb and the Belle II experiment.

Generalised $μ$-$τ$ symmetries and calculable gauge kinetic and mass mixing in $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ models

Extensions of the standard model with a $U(1)$ gauge symmetry contain gauge invariant kinetic mixing, $\sinχ$, and gauge non-invariant mass mixing, $δM^2$, between the hypercharge and the new gauge boson $Z'$. These represent a priori incalculable but phenomenologically important parameters of the theory. They become calculable if there exist spontaneously or softly broken symmetries which forbid them at tree level but allow their generation at the loop level. We discuss various symmetries falling in this category in the context of the gauged $L_μ-L_τ$ models and their interplay with lepton mixing. It is shown that one gets phenomenologically inconsistent lepton mixing parameters if these symmetries are exact. Spontaneous breaking of these symmetries can lead to consistent lepton mixing and also generates finite and calculable values of these parameters at one or two loop order depending on the underlying symmetry. We calculate these parameters in two specific cases: (i) the standard seesaw model with $μ$-$τ$ symmetry broken by the masses of the right-handed neutrinos and (ii) in a model containing a pair of vectorlike charged leptons which break $μ$-$τ$ symmetry. In case (i), the right-handed neutrinos are the only source of gauge mixing. The kinetic mixing parameters are suppressed and vanish if the right-handed neutrinos decouple from the theory. In contrast, there exists a finite gauge mixing in case (ii) which survives even when the masses of vectorlike leptons are taken to infinity, exhibiting non-decoupling behaviour. The seesaw model discussed here represents a complete framework with practically no kinetic mixing and hence can survive a large number of experimental probes used to rule out specific ranges in the coupling $g^\prime$ and mass $M_{Z^\prime}$. The model can generate non-universality in tau decays, which can be tested in future experiments.

$η/s$ in a strongly coupled QFT

We consider $O(N)$ $gφ^4$ theory with the coupling $g$ being large, and calculate shear viscosity to entropy density ratio ($η/s$). The final result for $η/s$ has a form remarkably similar to that obtained from string theory calculations via the AdS/CFT conjecture. The method adopted can be used to compute quantities of interest in other theories as well with some modifications and reveals some very interesting features within the considered theory.

Towards a unified explanation of $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$, $R_{K}$ and $(g-2)_μ$ anomalies in a left-right model with leptoquarks

We present a unified explanation for the $B$-decay anomalies in $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$ and $R_{K}$ together with the anomalous muon magnetic moment, consistent with the constraints from the current measurements of leptonic decay rates and $D^0-\bar{D}^0$, $B_{s}^0-\bar{B}_{s}^0$ mixings, within the framework of a minimal left-right symmetric gauge theory motivated by one of the low-energy subgroups of $E_{6}$ naturally accommodating leptoquarks.

$\bar{B}\rightarrow D^{(\ast)}τ\barν$ excesses in ALRSM constrained from $B$, $D$ decays and $D^{0}-\bar{D}^{0}$ mixing

Recent experimental results from the LHCb, BaBar and Belle collaborations on the semitauonic decays of $B$ meson, $\bar{B}\rightarrow D^{(\ast)}τ\barν$, showing a significant deviation from the Standard Model (SM), hint towards a new physics scenario beyond the SM. In this work, we show that these enhanced decay rates can be explained within the framework of $E_{6}$ motivated Alternative Left-Right Symmetric Model (ALRSM), which has been successful in explaining the recent CMS excesses and has the feature of accommodating high scale leptogenesis. The R-parity conserving couplings in ALRSM can contribute universally to both $\bar{B}\rightarrow D τ\barν$ and $\bar{B}\rightarrow D^{(\ast)}τ\barν$ via the exchange of scalar leptoquarks. We study the leptonic decays $D_{s}^{+} \rightarrow τ^{+} \barν$, $B^{+}\rightarrow τ^{+} \barν$, $D^{+}\rightarrow τ^{+} \barν$ and $D^{0}$-$\bar{D}^{0}$ mixing to constrain the couplings involved in explaining the enhanced $B$ decay rates and we find that ALRSM can explain the current experimental data on $\mathcal{R}(D^{(\ast)})$ quite well while satisfying these constraints.

Light neutrino contribution: is it all there is to neutrinoless double beta decay?

We consider perturbative one loop QCD corrections to the light neutrino contribution to neutrinoless double beta decay and find large enhancement to the rate. QCD corrections also generate structures which mimic new physics contributions usually considered. Within some approximations, the net effect seem to almost saturate the experimental limits, and therefore seems to implt that this is all there is to neutrinoless double beta decay.

$B\rightarrow K^{*}l^+ l^-$: Zeroes of angular observables as test of standard model

We calculate the zeroes of angular observables $P_4^{'}$ and $P_5^{'}$ of 4 - body angular distribution of $B\rightarrow K^{*} (\rightarrow K π) l^+ l^-$ where LHCb, in its analysis of form factor independent angular observables, has found deviations from standard model predictions in one of the $q^2$ bins. In the large recoil region, we obtain relations between the zeroes of $P_4^{'}$, $P_5^{'}$ and the zero of forward-backward asymmetry of lepton pair. These relations, in the considered region, are independent of hadronic uncertainties and depend only on Wilson coefficients. We also construct a new observable, $\mathcal{O}_T^{L,R}$, whose zero in the standard model coincides with the zero of forward-backward asymmetry but in presence of new physics contributions will show different behavior. Moreover, the profile of the new observable, even within the standard model, is very different from the forward backward asymmetry. We point out that precise measurements of these zeroes in near future would provide crucial test of the standard model and would be useful in distinguishing between different possible new physics contributions to Wilson coefficients.

BICEP2, non Bunch-Davies and Entanglement

BICEP2 result on the tensor to scalar ratio $r$ indicates a blue tilt in the primordial gravitational wave spectrum. This blue tilt and the observed large value $r = 0.2$ are difficult to accommodate within the single field inflationary scenarios under standard conditions. Non Bunch-Davies vacuum states have been proposed as a possibility. Such vacuua are known to lead to pathologies. In this note we propose to interpret them as excited/squeezed states built over the standard Bunch-Davies vacuum and discuss the associated entanglement properties due to de Sitter horizon, and how such an approach may be more natural in the context of inflation.

Charged Higgs contribution to $0\nu2β$ decay

The singly charged Higgs boson contribution to $0\nu2β$ is neglected on grounds of couplings involving small masses and small nuclear matrix elements. We reconsider such contributions, but now in the light of QCD corrections and renormalization group evolution. It is found that the charged Higgs contribution is generically as large as (and at times significantly larger than) the other contributions and there can be large cancellations between contributions coming from different sources. This observation will have an important impact on the phenomenology.

Neutrinoless double beta decay and QCD corrections

We consider one loop QCD corrections and renormalization group running of the neutrinoless double beta decay amplitude focusing on the short-range part of the amplitude (without the light neutrino exchange) and find that these corrections can be sizeable. Depending on the operator under consideration, there can be moderate to large cancellations or significant enhancements. We discuss several specific examples in this context. Such large corrections will lead to significant shifts in the half-life estimates which currently are known to be plagued with the uncertainties due to nuclear physics inputs to the physical matrix elements.

Supersymmetric flat directions and resonant gravitino production

We study resonant gravitino production in the early Universe in the presence of SUSY flat directions whose large VEVs break some but not all gauge symmetries. We find that for a large region of parameter space the gravitino abundance is several orders of magnitude larger than the cosmological upper bound. Since flat directions with large VEVs are generically expected in supersymmetric theories this result further exacerbates the gravitino problem.

On non-minimal coupling of the inflaton

The non-minimal coupling of the inflaton to gravity, $ξRϕ^2$, is known to alleviate the smallness (fine-tuning) of the quartic coupling $λ$ in the chaotic inflation with $ϕ^4$ potential. A large $ξ$ is required to obtain the correct CMB power spectrum while we find that a small value $\sim 1/6$ seems to be preferred from spectral index. There are issues related to conformal transformations, choice of frame and natural value(s) of $ξ$ for a given potential. We revisit some of these issues and invoke certain field theoretic arguments in order to address the same. A rather strong and general conclusion reached, based on the requirements of renormalizability and finiteness of specific matrix elements in a quantum theory, is that it is generically not possible to eliminate the non-minimal coupling by going from the Jordan to the Einstein frame via conformal transformations. We also comment on Higgs inflation.

On the power spectrum generated during inflation

Recently there have been differing viewpoints on how to evaluate the curvature power spectrum generated during inflation. Since the primordial curvature power spectrum is the seed for structure formation and provides a link between observations and inflationary parameters, it is important to resolve any disagreements over the expression for the power spectrum. In this article we discuss these differing viewpoints and indicate issues that are relevant to both approaches. We then argue why the standard expression is valid.

Anomalous gauge boson couplings, 125 GeV Higgs and singlet scalar dark matter

The recently observed Higgs like resonance at 125 GeV shows an enhanced rate in the diphoton channel, while being roughly consistent with the standard model expectation for the $WW^*$ and $ZZ^*$ channels. Such an enhancement is possible due to anomalous gauge boson couplings. We explore this feature within a minimal extension of the standard model, where a singlet scalar is introduced which also plays the role of the dark matter candidate. It is argued that such a minimal scenario, without new charged particles, can in principle lead to the desired enhancement of the diphoton rate via the induced anomalous gauge couplings, and at the same time improve the stability of the electroweak vacuum.

Remarks on non-gaussian fluctuations of the inflaton and constancy of ζoutside the horizon

We point out that the non-gaussianity arising from cubic self interactions of the inflaton field is proportional to ξN_e where ξ~ V"' and N_e is the number of e-foldings from horizon exit till the end of inflation. For scales of interest N_e = 60, and for models of inflation such as new inflation, natural inflation and running mass inflation ξis large compared to the slow roll parameter ε~ V'^{2}. Therefore the contribution from self interactions should not be outrightly ignored while retaining other terms in the non-gaussianity parameter f_{NL}. But the N_e dependent term seems to imply the growth of non-gaussianities outside the horizon. Therefore we briefly discuss the issue of the constancy of correlations of the curvature perturbation ζoutside the horizon. We then calculate the 3-point function of the inflaton fluctuations using the canonical formalism and further obtain the 3-point function of ζ_k. We find that the N_e dependent contribution to f_{NL} from self interactions of the inflaton field is cancelled by contributions from other terms associated with non-linearities in cosmological perturbation theory.

$b\to sμ^+μ^-$ tensor operators from $B\to K^*(X_s) γ$

Tensor operators are often invoked as specific new physics operators beyond the standard model in an effort to explain anomalies in rare B-decays and CP asymmetries. Specifically, $b \to s μ^+μ^-$ tensor operators are invoked in the study of semi-leptonic decays, both inclusive and exclusive. In this note we use the data on $b \to s$ radiative decay modes and CP asymmetries to tightly constrain the tensor operators. It is found that constraints thus obtained are tighter than those from semi-leptonic modes. We also comment on $b \to ss\bar{s}$ tensor operators that help in explaining the $B \to ϕK^*$ polarization puzzle, and $b\to sτ^+τ^-$ operators with tensor structure.

Electromagnetic leptogenesis at the TeV scale

We construct an explicit model implementing electromagnetic leptogenesis. In a simple extension of the Standard Model, a discrete symmetry forbids the usual decays of the right-handed neutrinos, while allowing for an effective coupling between the left-handed and right-handed neutrinos through the electromagnetic dipole moment. This generates correct leptogenesis with resonant enhancement and also the required neutrino mass via a TeV scale seesaw mechanism. The model is consistent with low energy phenomenology and would have distinct signals in the next generation colliders, and, perhaps even the LHC.
