Atomistic mechanisms and diameter selection during nanorod growth

We study in this paper the atomic mechanisms of nanorod growth and propose the way of diameter selection of nanorod. A characteristic radius is demonstrated to be crucial in nanorod growth, which increases proportional to one fifth power of the ratio of the interlayer hopping rate of adatoms across the monolayer steps to the deposition rate. When the radius of the initial island is larger than this characteristic radius, the growth morphology evolves from a taper-like structure to a nanorod with radius equal to the characteristic radius after some transient layers. Otherwise the nanorod morphology can be maintained during the growth, with stable radius being limited by both the radius of the initial island and the three-dimensional Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier. Therefore different growth modes and diameter of nanorod can be selected by tuning the characteristic radius. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with experimental observations of ZnO growth.

Controlling growth of nanorod via screening effects

We demonstrate in this report that nanorods can spontaneously grow on the top of a transient mound when the screening effect is considered in island growth. The number of the topmost growing layers is defined as the active length, which decreases as the screening effect is enhanced. It follows that the thickness of the transient mound underneath the nanorod increases as the square of the active length, and a smaller active length favors the formation of nanorod.

Construction of Chiral Metamaterial with U-Shaped Resonator Assembly

Chiral structure can be applied to construct metamaterial with negative refractive index (NRI). In an assembly of double-layered metallic U-shaped resonators with two resonant frequencies wH and wL, the effective induced electric and magnetic dipoles, which are contributed by the specific surface current distributions, are collinear at the same frequency. Consequently, for left circularly polarized light, NRI occurs at wH, whereas for right circularly polarized light it occurs at wL. Our design provides a new example to apply chiral structures to tune electromagnetic properties, and could be enlightening in exploring chiral metamaterials.
