Large format imaging spectrograph for the Large Submillimeter Telescope (LST)

We present a conceptual study of a large format imaging spectrograph for the Large Submillimeter Telescope (LST) and the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST). Recent observations of high-redshift galaxies indicate the onset of earliest star formation just a few 100 million years after the Big Bang (i.e., z = 12--15), and LST/AtLAST will provide a unique pathway to uncover spectroscopically-identified first forming galaxies in the pre-reionization era, once it will be equipped with a large format imaging spectrograph. We propose a 3-band (200, 255, and 350 GHz), medium resolution (R = 2,000) imaging spectrograph with 1.5 M detectors in total based on the KATANA concept (Karatsu et al. 2019), which exploits technologies of the integrated superconducting spectrometer (ISS) and a large-format imaging array. A 1-deg2 drilling survey (3,500 hr) will capture a large number of [O III] 88 um (and [C II] 158 um) emitters at z = 8--9, and constrain [O III] luminosity functions at z > 12.

High-precision quadrupole moment reveals significant intruder component in 33Al20 ground state

The electric quadrupole moment of the 33Al20 ground state, located at the border of the island of inversion, was obtained using continuous-beam beta-detected nuclear quadrupole resonance (beta-NQR). From the measured quadrupole coupling constant Q = 2.31(4) MHz in an alpha-Al2O3 crystal, a precise value for the electric quadrupole moment is extracted: Qs= 141(3) mb. A comparison with large-scale shell model calculations shows that 33Al has at least 50% intruder configurations in the ground state wave function, favoring the excitation of two neutrons across the N = 20 shell gap. 33Al therefore clearly marks the gradual transition north of the deformed Na and Mg nuclei towards the normal Z>14 isotopes.

Formation of primordial supermassive stars by burst accretion

A promising formation channel of SMBHs at redshift 6 is the so-called DC model, which posits that a massive seed BH forms through gravitational collapse of a $\sim 10^5~M_\odot$ SMS. We study the evolution of such a SMS growing by rapid mass accretion. In particular, we examine the impact of time-dependent mass accretion of repeating burst and quiescent phases that are expected to occur with a self-gravitating circumstellar disk. We show that the stellar evolution with such episodic accretion differs qualitatively from that expected with a constant accretion rate, even if the mean accretion rate is the same. Unlike the case of constant mass accretion, whereby the star expands roughly following $R_* \simeq 2.6 \times 10^3 R_\odot (M_*/100~M_\odot)^{1/2}$, the protostar can substantially contract during the quiescent phases between accretion bursts. The stellar effective temperature and ionizing photon emissivity increase accordingly as the star contracts, which can cause strong ionizing feedback and halt the mass accretion onto the star. With a fixed duration of the quiescent phase $Δt_{\rm q}$, such contraction occurs in early evolutionary phases, i.e. for $M_* \lesssim 10^3~M_\odot$ with $Δt_{\rm q} \simeq 10^3$ yr. For later epochs and larger masses but the same $Δt_{\rm q}$, contraction is negligible even during quiescent phases. With larger quiescent times $Δt_{\rm q}$, however, the star continues to contract during quiescent phases even for the higher stellar masses. We show that such behavior is well understood by comparing the interval time and the thermal relaxation time for a bloated surface layer. We conclude that the UV radiative feedback becomes effective if the quiescent phase associated by the burst accretion is longer than $\sim 10^3$ yr, which is possible in an accretion disk forming in the direct collapse model.

Estimation of the lead-lag parameter from non-synchronous data

We propose a simple continuous time model for modeling the lead-lag effect between two financial assets. A two-dimensional process $(X_t,Y_t)$ reproduces a lead-lag effect if, for some time shift $\vartheta\in \mathbb{R}$, the process $(X_t,Y_{t+\vartheta})$ is a semi-martingale with respect to a certain filtration. The value of the time shift $\vartheta$ is the lead-lag parameter. Depending on the underlying filtration, the standard no-arbitrage case is obtained for $\vartheta=0$. We study the problem of estimating the unknown parameter $\vartheta\in \mathbb{R}$, given randomly sampled non-synchronous data from $(X_t)$ and $(Y_t)$. By applying a certain contrast optimization based on a modified version of the Hayashi-Yoshida covariation estimator, we obtain a consistent estimator of the lead-lag parameter, together with an explicit rate of convergence governed by the sparsity of the sampling design.

Simultaneous valence shift of Pr and Tb ions at the spin-state transition in ((Pr$_{1-y}$Tb$_{y})_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$

Temperature dependence of the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra at the Pr $L_{3}$- and Tb $L_{3}$-edges was measured for the (Pr$_{1-y}$Tb$_{y})_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$ system, in which a metal-insulator (MI) and spin-state (SS) transition took place simultaneously at a critical temperature $T_{\rm MI}$. A small increase in the valence of the terbium ion was found below $T_{\rm MI}$, besides the enhancement of the praseodymium valence; the trivalent states, which are stable at room temperature, change to a 3+/4+ ionic mixture at low temperatures. In particular for the $y$=0.2 sample, the average valence determined at 8 K amounts to 3.03+ and 3.25+ for the Tb and Pr ion, respectively. In analogous (Pr$_{1-y}$RE$_{y})_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$ samples (RE=Sm and Eu), in which the MI-SS transition also took place, no valence shift of the RE ion was detected in the XANES spectra at the RE ion $L_{3}$-edge. The role of the substituted RE ion for the Pr-site on the MI-SS transition is discussed.

Two neutrino double-$β$ decay in the interacting boson-fermion model

A calculation of the spectroscopic properties, energy levels and electromagnetic transitions and moments, of the ten nuclei $^{128,130}$Te, $^{128,130}$I, $^{128,130}$Xe, $^{129,131}$I, $^{127,129}$Te within the framework of the interacting boson model (IBM-2) and its extensions (IBFM-2 and IBFFM-2) is presented. The wave functions so obtained are used to calculate single-$β$ and $2νββ$ matrix elements for $^{128,130}$Te $\to$ $^{128,130}$I $\to$ $^{128,130}$Xe ecay. Use of the effective value of the axial vector coupling constant $g_{A,\text{eff},β}$ extracted from single-$β$ produces results for $2νββ$ in agreement with experiment.
