Charge and spin order dichotomy in NdNiO$_2$ driven by SrTiO$_3$ capping layer

Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates holds exciting analogies with that of cuprates, with similar structures and $3d$-electron count. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) we studied electronic and magnetic excitations and charge density correlations in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_2$ thin films with and without an SrTiO$_3$ capping layer. We observe dispersing magnons only in the capped samples, progressively dampened at higher doping. In addition, we detect an elastic resonant scattering peak in the uncapped $x=0$ compound at wave vector (1/3,0), remindful of the charge order signal in hole doped cuprates. The peak weakens at $x=0.05$ and disappears in the superconducting $x=0.20$ film. The uncapped samples also present a higher degree of Ni$3d$-Nd$5d$ hybridization and a smaller anisotropy of the Ni$3d$ occupation with respect to the capped samples. The role of the capping on the possible hydrogen incorporation or on other mechanisms responsible for the electronic reconstruction far from the interface remains to be understood.

Room temperature polarization in the ferrimagnetic Ga2-xFexO3 ceramics

The effect of the Fe-Ga ratio on the magnetic and electric properties of the multiferroic Ga2-xFexO3 compound has been studied in order to determine the composition range exhibiting magnetic and electric orders coexistence and their critical temperatures. A magnetoelectric phase diagram, showing the evolution of both the Neel magnetic ordering temperature and the electric ordering temperature, versus the iron content has been established for x values between 0.9 and 1.4. While the ferrimagnetic Neel temperature increases with the iron content, the electric ordering temperature shows an opposite trend. The electric polarization has been found to exist far above room temperature for the x value of 1.1 composition which shows the highest observed electric ordering temperature of approx. 580K. The compounds with x values of 1.3 and 1.4 are ferrimagnetic-electric relaxors with both properties coexisting at room temperature.

Study of molecular spin-crossover complex Fe(phen)2(NCS)2 thin films

We report on the growth by evaporation under high vacuum of high-quality thin films of Fe(phen)2(NCS)2 (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) that maintain the expected electronic structure down to a thickness of 10 nm and that exhibit a temperature-driven spin transition. We have investigated the current-voltage characteristics of a device based on such films. From the space charge-limited current regime, we deduce a mobility of 6.5x10-6 cm2/V?s that is similar to the low-range mobility measured on the widely studied tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminium organic semiconductor. This work paves the way for multifunctional molecular devices based on spin-crossover complexes.
