Temperature dependence of (111) and (110) ceria surface energy

High temperature properties of ceria surfaces are important for many applications. Here we report the temperature dependences of surface energy for the (111) and (110) CeO2 obtained in the framework of the extended two-stage upsampled thermodynamic integration using Langevin dynamics (TU-TILD). The method was used together with machinelearning potentials called moment tensor potentials (MTPs), which were fitted to the results of the ab initio MD calculations for (111) and (110) CeO2 at different temperatures. The parameters of MTPs training and fitting were tested and the optimal algorithm for the ceria systems was proposed. We found that the temperature increases from 0 K to 2100 K led to the decrease of the Helmholtz free energy of (111) CeO2 from 0.78 J/m2 to 0.64 J/m2. The energy of (110) CeO2 dropped from 1.19 J/m2 at 0 K to 0.92 J/m2 at 1800 K. We show that it is important to take anharmonicity into account as simple consideration of volume expansion gives wrong temperature dependences of the surface energies.

Polaron mobility in oxygen-deficient and lithium doped tungsten trioxide

Electron localization and polaron mobility in oxygen deficient as well as Li doped monoclinic tungsten trioxide have been studied. We show that small polarons formed in the presence of oxygen vacancy prefer the bipolaronic $W^{5+}- W^{5+}$ configuration whereas the $W^{6+}- W^{4+}$ configuration is found to be metastable. Our calculations suggest that bipolarons are tightly bound by the vacancy and therefore largely immobile. On the contrary, polarons formed as a result of Li intercalation can be mobile, the activation energy for polaron jumping in this case varies between 98 and 124 meV depending on the crystallographic direction. The formation of $W^{5+}- W^{5+}$ bipolarons in $Li-WO_{3}$ is possible. When situated along $[001]$ the bipolaronic configuration is 8 meV lower in energy than two separate $W^{5+}$ polarons.

A molecular mechanism for the water-hydroxyl balance during wetting of TiO2

We show that the formation of the wetting layer and the experimentally observed continuous shift of the H2O-OH balance towards molecular water at increasing coverage on a TiO2(110) surface can be rationalized on a molecular level. The mechanism is based on the initial formation of stable hydroxyl pairs, a repulsive interaction between these pairs and an attractive interaction with respect to water molecules. The experimental data are obtained by synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy and interpreted with the aid of density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations.
