Spatiotemporal entanglement in a noncollinear optical parametric amplifier

We theoretically investigate the generation of two entangled beams of light in the process of single-pass type-I noncollinear frequency degenerate parametric downconversion with an ultrashort pulsed pump. We find the spatio-temporal squeezing eigenmodes and the corresponding squeezing eigenvalues of the generated field both numerically and analytically. The analytical solution is obtained by modeling the joint spectral amplitude of the field by a Gaussian function in curvilinear coordinates. We show that this method is highly efficient and is in a good agreement with the numerical solution. We also reveal that when the total bandwidth of the generated beams is sufficiently high, the modal functions cannot be factored into a spatial and a temporal parts, but exhibit a spatio-temporal coupling, whose strength can be increased by shortening the pump.

Quantum Enhanced Measurement of an Optical Frequency Comb

Measuring the spectral properties of an optical frequency comb is among the most fundamental tasks of precision metrology. In contrast to general single-parameter measurement schemes, we demonstrate here single shot multiparameter estimation at and beyond the standard quantum limit. The mean energy and the central frequency of ultrafast pulses are simultaneously determined with a multi-pixel-spectrally-resolved (MPSR) apparatus, without changing the photonics architecture. Moreover, using a quantum frequency comb that consists of multiple squeezed states in a family of Hermite-Gaussian spectral/temporal modes, the signal-to-noise ratios of the mean energy and the central frequency measurements surpass the shot-noise limit by around 19% and 15%, respectively. Combining our multi-pixel detection scheme and the intrinsic multimode quantum resource could find applications in ultrafast quantum metrology and multimode quantum information processing.

Is "genuine multipartite entanglement" really genuine?

The existence of non-local quantum correlations is certainly the most important specific property of the quantum world. However, it is a challenging task to distinguish correlations of classical origin from genuine quantum correlations, especially when the system involves more than two parties, for which different partitions must be simultaneously considered. In the case of mixed states, intermediate levels of correlations must be introduced, coined by the name inseparability. In this work, we revisit in more detail such a concept in the context of continuous-variable quantum optics. We consider a six-partite quantum state that we have effectively generated by the parametric downconversion of a femtosecond frequency comb, the full 12 x 12 covariance matrix of which has been experimentally determined. We show that, though this state does not exhibit "genuine entanglement", it is undoubtedly multipartite-entangled. The consideration of not only the entanglement of individual mode-decompositions but also of combinations of those solves the puzzle and exemplifies the importance of studying different categories of multipartite entanglement.

Optimization of networks for measurement-based quantum computation

This work introduces optimization strategies to continuous variable measurement based quantum computation (MBQC) at different levels. We provide a recipe for mitigating the effects of finite squeezing, which affect the production of cluster states and the result of a traditional MBQC. These strategies are readily implementable by several experimental groups. Furthermore, a more general scheme for MBQC is introduced that does not necessarily rely on the use of ancillary cluster states to achieve its aim, but rather on the detection of a resource state in a suitable mode basis followed by digital post-processing. A recipe is provided to optimize the adjustable parameters that are employed within this framework.

Reconfigurable Optical Quantum Networks Using Multimode Quantum Frequency Combs and Pulse Shaping

Multimode entanglement is quintessential for the design and fabrication of quantum networks, which play a central role in quantum information processing and quantum metrology. However, an experimental setup is generally constructed with a specific network configuration in mind and therefore exhibits reduced versatility and scalability. The present work demonstrates an on-demand, reconfigurable quantum network simulator, using an intrinsically multimode quantum resource and a homodyne detection apparatus. Without altering either the initial squeezing source or experimen- tal architecture, we realize the construction of thirteen cluster states of various size and connectivity as well as the implementation of a secret sharing protocol. In particular, this simulator enables the interrogation of quantum correlations and fluctuations for a Gaussian quantum network. This initi- ates a new avenue for implementing on-demand quantum information processing by only adapting the measurement process and not the experimental layout.

Squeezed light from a diamond-turned monolithic cavity

For some crystalline materials, a regime can be found where continuous ductile cutting is feasible. Using precision diamond turning, such materials can be cut into complex optical components with high surface quality and form accuracy. In this work we use diamond-turning to machine a monolithic, square-shaped, doubly-resonant $LiNbO_3$ cavity with two flat and two convex facets. When additional mild polishing is implemented, the Q-factor of the resonator is found to be limited only by the material absorption loss. We show how our monolithic square resonator may be operated as an optical parametric oscillator that is evanescently coupled to free-space beams via birefringent prisms. The prism arrangement allows for independent and large tuning of the fundamental and second harmonic coupling rates. We measure $2.6\pm0.5$ dB of vacuum squeezing at 1064 nm using our system. Potential improvements to obtain higher degrees of squeezing are discussed.

Atomic quantum memory for multimode frequency combs

We propose a Raman quantum memory scheme that uses several atomic ensembles to store and retrieve the multimode highly entangled state of an optical quantum frequency comb, such as the one produced by parametric down-conversion of a pump frequency comb. We analyse the efficiency and the fidelity of such a quantum memory. Results show that our proposal may be helpful to multimode information processing using the different frequency bands of an optical frequency comb.

Full multipartite entanglement of frequency comb Gaussian states

An analysis is conducted of the multipartite entanglement for Gaussian states generated by the parametric down-conversion of a femtosecond frequency comb. Using a recently introduced method for constructing optimal entanglement criteria, a family of tests is formulated for mode decompositions that extends beyond the traditional bipartition analyses. A numerical optimization over this family is performed to achieve maximal significance of entanglement verification. For experimentally prepared 4-, 6-, and 10-mode states, full entanglement is certified for all of the 14, 202, and 115974 possible nontrivial partitions, respectively.

Quantum parameter estimation using general single-mode Gaussian states

We calculate the quantum Cramér--Rao bound for the sensitivity with which one or several parameters, encoded in a general single-mode Gaussian state, can be estimated. This includes in particular the interesting case of mixed Gaussian states. We apply the formula to the problems of estimating phase, purity, loss, amplitude, and squeezing. In the case of the simultaneous measurement of several parameters, we provide the full quantum Fisher information matrix. Our results unify previously known partial results, and constitute a complete solution to the problem of knowing the best possible sensitivity of measurements based on a single-mode Gaussian state.

Symplectic approach to the amplification process in a nonlinear fiber

We analyze the amplification processes occurring in a nonlinear fiber, either driven with one or two pumps. After determining the solution for the signal and idler fields resulting from these amplification processes, we analyze the physical transformations that these fields undergo. To this aim, we use a Bloch-Messiah decomposition for the symplectic transformation governing the fields evolution. Although conceptually equivalent to other works in this area [McKinstrie and Karlsson, Opt. Expr. 21, 1374 (2013)], this analysis is intended to be particularly simple, gathering results spread in the literature, which is useful for guiding practical implementations. Furthermore, we present a study of the correlations of the signal-idler fields at the amplifier output. We show that these fields are correlated, study their correlations as a function of the pump power, and stress the impact of these correlations on the amplifier noise figure. Finally, we address the effect of losses. We determine whether it is advantageous to consider a link consisting in an amplifying non-linear fiber, followed by a standard fiber based lossy transmission line, or whether the two elements should be reversed, by comparing the respective noise figures.

Quantum correlations and fluctuations in the pulsed light produced by a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator below its oscillation threshold

We present a simple quantum theory for the pulsed light generated by a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO) in the degenerate case where the signal and idler trains of pulses coincide, below threshold and neglecting all dispersion effects. Our main goal is to precise in the obtained quantum effects, which ones are identical to the c.w. case and which ones are specific to the SPOPO. We demonstrate in particular that the temporal correlations have interesting peculiarities: the quantum fluctuations at different times within the same pulse turn out to be totally not correlated, whereas they are correlated between nearby pulses at times that are placed in the same position relative to the centre of the pulses. The number of significantly correlated pulses is of the order of cavity finesse. We show also that there is perfect squeezing at noise frequencies multiple of the pulse repetition frequency when one approaches the threshold from below on the signal field quadrature measured by a balanced homodyne detection with a local oscillator of very short duration compared to the SPOPO pulse length.

Entanglement measurement of the quadrature components without the homodyne detection in the spatially multi-mode far-field

We consider the measuring procedure that in principle allows to avoid the homodyne detection for the simultaneous selection of both quadrature components in the far-field. The scheme is based on the use of the coherent sources of the non-classical light. The possibilities of the procedure are illustrated on the basis of the use of pixellised sources, where the phase-locked sub-Poissonian lasers or the degenerate optical parametric oscillator generating above threshold are chosen as the pixels. The theory of the pixellised source of the spatio-temporal squeezed light is elaborated as a part of this investigation.
