On the selective multiphoton ionization of sodium by femtosecond laser pulses: A partial-wave analysis

Multiphoton ionization of sodium by femtosecond laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength in the range of laser peak intensities entering over-the-barrier ionization domain is studied. Photoelectron momentum distributions and the energy spectra are determined numerically by solving the time dependent Schroedinger equation for three values of the laser intensity from this domain. The calculated spectra agree well with the spectra obtained experimentally by Hart et al (Phys. Rev. A 2016 93 063426). A partial wave analysis of the spectral peaks related to Freeman resonances has shown that each peak is a superposition of the contributions of photoelectrons produced by the resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization via different intermediate states. It is demonstrated that at specific laser intensities the selective ionization, which occurs predominantly through a single intermediate state, is possible.

Over-the-barrier electron detachment in the hydrogen negative ion

The electron detachment from the hydrogen negative ion in strong fields is studied using the two-electron and different single-electron models within the quasistatic approximation. A special attention is payed to over-the-barrier regime where the Stark saddle is suppressed below the lowest energy level. It is demonstrated that the single-electron description of the lowest state of ion, that is a good approximation for weak fields, fails in this and partially in the tunneling regime. The exact lowest state energies and detachment rates for the ion at different strengths of the applied field are determined by solving the eigenvalue problem of the full two-electron Hamiltonian. An accurate formula for the rate, that is valid in both regimes, is determined by fitting the exact data to the expression estimated using single-electron descriptions.

Magnetic alteration of entanglement in two-electron quantum dots

Quantum entanglement is analyzed thoroughly in the case of the ground and lowest states of two-electron axially symmetric quantum dots under a perpendicular magnetic field. The individual-particle and the center-of-mass representations are used to study the entanglement variation at the transition from interacting to noninteracting particle regimes. The mechanism of symmetry breaking due to the interaction, that results in the states with symmetries related to the later representation only, being entangled even at the vanishing interaction, is discussed. The analytical expression for the entanglement measure based on the linear entropy is derived in the limit of noninteracting electrons. It reproduces remarkably well the numerical results for the lowest states with the magnetic quantum number M>2 in the interacting regime. It is found that the entanglement of the ground state is a discontinuous function of the field strength. A method to estimate the entanglement of the ground state, characterized by the quantum number M, with the aid of the magnetic field dependence of the addition energy is proposed.

A geometrical crossover in excited states of two-electron quantum dots in a magnetic field

We use the entanglement measure to study the evolution of quantum correlations in two-electron axially-symmetric parabolic quantum dots under a perpendicular magnetic field. We found that the entanglement indicates on the shape transition in the density distribution of two electrons in the lowest state with zero angular momentum projection at the specific value of the applied magnetic field.

Entanglement as an indicator of a geometrical crossover in a two-electron quantum dot in a magnetic field

We found that a downwardly concave entanglement evolution of the ground state of a two-electron axially symmetric quantum dot testifies that a shape transition from a lateral to a vertical localization of two electrons under a perpendicular magnetic field takes place. Although affected, the two-electron probability density does not exhibit any prominent change.

Finite-thickness effects in ground-state transitions of two-electron quantum dots

Using the exactly solvable excitation spectrum of two-electron quantum dots with parabolic potential, we show that the inclusion of the vertical extension of the quantum dot provides a consistent description of the experimental findings of Nishi et al. [Phys.Rev.B75, 121301(R) (2007)]. We found that the second singlet-triplet transition in the ground state is a vanishing function of the lateral confinement in the three-dimensional case, while it always persists in the two-dimensional case. We show that a slight decrease of the lateral confinement leads to a formation of the Wigner molecule at low magnetic fields.
