Dissipation of moving vortices in thin films

Moving vortices in thin superconducting films are considered within the time-dependent London description. The dissipation due to out-of-core normal excitations for two vortices moving together turns out to have a minimum for the separation vector $\bm a$ parallel to the velocity and equal to $a_m \approx 2.2\, Λ$, where $Λ$ is the Pearl length. The minimum entropy production suggests that moving vortices should have a tendency to form chains along the velocity with a period of the order $a_m$.

Moving Pearl vortices in thin-film superconductors

The magnetic field $h_z$ of a moving Pearl vortex in a superconducting thin-film in $(x,y)$ plane is studied with the help of time-dependent London equation. It is found that for a vortex at the origin moving in $+x$ direction, $h_z(x,y)$ is suppressed in front of the vortex, $x>0$, and enhanced behind ($x<0$). The distribution asymmetry is proportional to the velocity and to the conductivity of normal quasiparticles. The vortex self-energy and the interaction of two moving vortices are evaluated.

Raman Studies of Anisotropic Magnetic Excitations in Fluctuating Nematic Striped La2-xSrxCuO4 and the Comparison to Uniform Nd2-xCexCuO4

The mechanism of the high temperature hole-doped superconductivity was investigated by Raman scattering. The Raman selection rule is unique, so that anisotropic magnetic excitations in a fluctuating spin-charge stripe can be detected as if it is static. We use different Raman selection rules for two kinds of magnetic Raman scattering processes, two-magnon scattering and high-energy electronic scattering. In order to confirm the difference, the Raman spectra of striped La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) and non-striped Nd2-xCexCuO4 (NCCO) were compared. The main results in LSCO are (1) magnetic excitations are presented by individual energy dispersions for the k\parallel stripe and the k\perp stripe, (2) the charge transfer is allowed only in the direction perpendicular to the stripe. The direction is the same as the Burgers vector of an edge dislocation. Hence we assume that a charge moves together with the edge dislocation of the charge stripe. The superconducting coherence length is close to the inter-charge stripe distance at x < 0.2. Therefore we propose a model that superconducting pairs are formed in the edge dislocations. The binding energy is related to the stripe formation energy.

Thermal noise in half infinite mirrors with non-uniform loss: a slab of excess loss in a half infinite mirror

We calculate the thermal noise in half-infinite mirrors containing a layer of arbitrary thickness and depth made of excessively lossy material but with the same elastic material properties as the substrate. For the special case of a thin lossy layer on the surface of the mirror, the excess noise scales as the ratio of the coating loss to the substrate loss and as the ratio of the coating thickness to the laser beam spot size. Assuming a silica substrate with a loss function of 3x10-8 the coating loss must be less than 3x10-5 for a 6 cm spot size and a 7 micrometers thick coating to avoid increasing the spectral density of displacement noise by more than 10%. A similar number is obtained for sapphire test masses.
