Anisotropic Lattice Compression and Pressure-Induced Electronic Phase Transitions in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

The crystal lattice of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is investigated with synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction under hydrostatic pressures up to $P=43$ GPa and temperatures down to $20$ K. The tetragonal unit cell is maintained over the whole investigated pressure range, within our resolution and sensitivity. The $c$-axis compressibility $κ_c(P,T) \equiv -({1} / {c}) ({d c} / {d P})$ presents an anomaly with pressure at $P_1=17$ GPa at fixed $T=20$ K that is not observed at $T=300$ K, whereas $κ_a(P,T)$ is nearly temperature-independent and shows a linear behavior with $P$. The anomaly in $κ_c(P,T)$ is associated with the onset of long-range magnetic order, as evidenced by an analysis of the temperature-dependence of the lattice parameters at fixed $P=13.7 \pm 0.5$ GPa. At fixed $T=20$ K, the tetragonal elongation $c/a(P,T)$ shows a gradual increment with pressure and a depletion above $P_2=30$ GPa that indicates an orbital transition and possibly marks the collapse of the $J_{eff}=1/2$ spin-orbit-entangled state. Our results support pressure-induced phase transitions or crossovers between electronic ground states that are sensed, and therefore can be probed, by the crystal lattice at low temperatures in this prototype spin-orbit Mott insulator.

Probing 5f electronic hybridization in Uranium compounds via x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We study the spin-dependent electronic structure of UTe and UT_{2}Si_{2} (T=Cu and Mn) compounds with a combination of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements and first principle calculations. By exploiting the presence of sizable quadrupolar and dipolar contributions to the U L_{2,3}-edge x-ray absorption cross section we are able to provide unique information on the extent of hybridization between 5f and 6d/3d electronic states, a key parameter regulating the physical properties of all actinide materials. Since this information is hardly accessible to other probes, the new methodology opens up new venues for investigating this important class of materials.

Fragility of ferromagnetic double exchange interactions and pressure tuning of magnetism in 3d-5d double perovskite Sr2FeOsO6

The ability to tune exchange (magnetic) interactions between 3d transition metals in perovskite structures has proven to be a powerful route to discovery of novel properties. Here we demonstrate that the introduction of 3d-5d exchange pathways in double perovskites enables additional tunability, a result of the large spatial extent of 5d wave functions. Using x-ray probes of magnetism and structure at high pressure, we show that compression of Sr2FeOsO6 drives an unexpected continuous change in the sign of Fe-Os exchange interactions and a transition from antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic order. We analyze the relevant electron-electron interactions, shedding light into fundamental differences with the more thoroughly studied 3d-3d systems.

Emergence of ferromagnetism and Jahn-Teller distortion in low Cr-substituted LaMnO3

The emergence of a ferromagnetic component in $LaMnO_{3}$ with low Cr-for-Mn substitution has been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Mn and Cr K edges. The local magnetic moment strength for the Mn and Cr are proportional to each other and follows the macroscopic magnetization. The net ferromagnetic components of $Cr^{3+}$ and $Mn^{3+}$ are found antiferromagnetically coupled. Unlike hole doping by La site substitution, the inclusion of $Cr^{3+}$ ions up to x = 0.15 does not decrease the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion and consequently does not significantly affect the orbital ordering. This demonstrates that the emergence of the ferromagnetism is not related to JT weakening and likely arises from a complex orbital mixing.

Monoatomic magnetic interfaces in IrMn/Cr/Co thin films probed by grazing incidence X-ray absorption spectroscopy

We present depth-resolved experimental results on the atomic and electronic structures of the Co-Cr interface on four IrMn/Cr/Co thin films with variable thickness of the Cr layer. Grazing incidence X-ray absorption near edge structure near the Cr K-edge was used, and an Angstrom resolved depth-profile for this layer was obtained. An interdiffusion between chromium and cobalt layers was observed in all films, being more pronounced for samples with thinner Cr layers, where Cr behaves as an amorphous material. This causes a contraction in coordination distances in Cr near the interface with Co. In this region, a change in the electronic structure of chromium's 3d orbitals is also observed, and it appears that Cr and Co form a covalent bond resulting in a CrCo alloy. Ab initio numerical simulations support such an interpretation of the obtained experimental results.

Reentrant valence transition in EuO at high pressures: beyond the bond-valence model

The pressure-dependent relation between Eu valence and lattice structure in model compound EuO is studied with synchrotron-based x-ray spectroscopic and diffraction techniques. Contrary to expectation, a 7% volume collapse at $\approx$ 45 GPa is accompanied by a reentrant Eu valence transition into a $\emph{lower}$ valence state. In addition to highlighting the need for probing both structure and electronic states directly when valence information is sought in mixed-valent systems, the results also show that widely used bond-valence methods fail to quantitatively describe the complex electronic valence behavior of EuO under pressure.

Synchrotron x-ray spectroscopy studies of valence and magnetic state in europium metal to extreme pressures

In order to probe the changes in the valence state and magnetic properties of Eu metal under extreme pressure, x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy experiments have been carried out. The Mössbauer isomer shift exhibits an anomalous pressure dependence, passing through a maximum near 20 GPa. Density functional theory has been applied to give insight into the pressure-induced changes in both Eu's electronic structure and Mössbauer isomer shift. Contrary to previous reports, Eu is found to remain nearly divalent to the highest pressures reached (87 GPa) with magnetic order persisting to at least 50 GPa. These results should lead to a better understanding of the nature of the superconducting state found above 75 GPa and of the sequence of structural phase transitions observed to 92 GPa.
