Optimized scintillation strip design for the DANSS upgrade

DANSS is a one cubic meter plastic scintillator detector with a primary goal of the sterile neutrino searches at a commercial nuclear reactor. Due to its highly advantageous location, fine segmentation and ability to change the distance to the neutrino production origin DANSS is ahead of many similar experiments around the world in terms of the counting rate, signal to background ratio and sterile neutrino exclusion regions. Yet a moderate energy resolution of the detector prevents the further progress in the physics program. The main challenge of the planned upgrade is to achieve the energy resolution of 12% at 1 MeV. The new design of the main sensitive element - the plastic scintillation strip - is the most important step forward. The strip prototypes were manufactured and tested at the pion beam of the PNPI synchrocyclotron. More than twice higher light output together with fairly flat detector response uniformity, longitudinal timing information and other optimizations will surely help to reach the upgrade goal. The paper discusses the drawbacks of the current strip version, outlines the new features of the proposed upgrade, describes the beam test procedure and presents the test results reflecting the advantages of the new strip design in comparison with the currently used version.

Photoproduction of K+Λ(1405)→K+π0Σ0K^+Λ(1405) \rightarrow K^+π^0Σ^0 extending to forward angles and low momentum transfer

K+Λ(1405)K^+Λ(1405) photoproduction has been studied at the BGOOD experiment via the all neutral decay, Λ(1405)→Σ0π0Λ(1405)\rightarrowΣ^0π^0. The unique BGOOD experimental setup allows both the cross section and Λ(1405)Λ(1405) invariant mass distribution (line shape) to be measured over a broad K+K^+ polar angle range, extending to extreme forward K+K^+ angles unattainable at previous experiments. Evidence is provided for the role of a triangle singularity driven by the N∗(2030)N^*(2030) resonance, which appears to contribute significantly to K+Λ(1405)K^+Λ(1405) photoproduction. This is observed in both the angular distributions and the integrated cross section which was determined with unprecedented energy resolution. The measured line shape is also in agreement with the previous results of CLAS and ANKE, and is consistent with two poles derived in χχPT based models.

K+ΛK^+Λ photoproduction at forward angles and low momentum transfer

γp→K+Λγp \rightarrow K^+ Λ differential cross sections and recoil polarisation data from threshold for extremely forward angles are presented. The measurements were performed at the BGOOD experiment at ELSA, utilising the high angular and momentum resolution forward spectrometer for charged particle identification. The data discriminates between conflicting results in the world data set and enable extraction of the cross section as the minimum momentum transfer to the recoiling hyperon is approached.

Strangeness Photoproduction at the BGO-OD experiment

The BGO-OD experiment at the ELSA accelerator facility uses an energy tagged bremsstrahlung photon beam to investigate the excitation structure of the nucleon. The setup consists of a highly segmented BGO calorimeter surrounding the target, with a particle tracking magnetic spectrometer at forward angles. BGO-OD is ideal for investigating low momentum transfer processes due to the acceptance and high momentum resolution at forward angles. In particular, this enables the investigation of strangeness photoproduction where t-channel exchange mechanisms play an important role. This also allows access to low momentum exchange kinematics where extended, molecular structure may manifest in reaction mechanisms. First key results at low tt indicate a cusp-like structure in K+Σ0K^+Σ^0 photoproduction at W=1900W = 1900\,MeV, line shapes and differential cross sections for K+ΛK^+Λ(1405)→K+Σ0π0\rightarrow K^+Σ^0π^0, and a peak structure in KS0Σ0K^0_SΣ^0 photoproduction. The peak in the KS0Σ0K^0_SΣ^0 channel appears consistent with meson-baryon generated states, where equivalent models have been used to describe the PCP_C pentaquark candidates in the heavy charmed quark sector.

Measurement of K−pK^- p radiative capture to γΛγΛ and γΣ0γΣ^0 for pK−p_{K^-} between 514 and 750 MeV/cc

Differential cross sections for K−K^- radiative capture in flight on the proton, leading to the γΛγΛ and γΣ0γΣ^0 final states, have been measured at eight K−K^- momenta between 514 and 750 MeV/cc. The data were obtained with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer installed at the separated K/πK/π beam line C6 of the BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The results substantially improve the existing experimental data available for studying radiative decays of excited hyperon states. An exploratory theoretical analysis is performed within the Regge-plus-resonance approach. According to this analysis, the γΣ0γΣ^0 final state is dominated by hyperonresonance exchange and hints at an important role for a resonance in the mass region of 1700 MeV. In the γΛγΛ final state, on the other hand, the resonant contributions account for only half the strength, and the data suggest the importance of a resonance in the mass region of 1550 MeV.
